  1. Hi Chris,

I've had a look tonight and believe I traced the issue to a dead dataserver link. For some reason, the data was no longer being recorded. I've changed it to a more reliable source and it appears to once again be working. :D

    Apologies for any inconvenience!

  2. Hey Sean,

They're been having heaps of issues with the dataserver lately. While it's significantly more reliable than it was, all external clients get this information from the same source. Hence, regardless of which client you use, the data won't appear if the server or link between servers isn't functioning correctly.

As Nick said, when using a pilot or controller client to get the ATIS info of a controller, it picks this information up directly from the controller and should come through.

Another issue to report, flying out of Jabiru, NT (YJAB), I was unable to reach BN-TRT_CTR on 133.2 on the ground.  The ERSA indicates there is radio coverage on ground, but I was unable to get through until roughly 4000ft AMSL on climb.

    Hey Matt,

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been incredibly busy with work over the past fortnight. I have investigated your reported issue and have found the reason you wouldn't be getting coverage on 133.2. According to the Airservices Australia NOTAM maps, the frequency 124.2 is for the class G airspace which isn't replicated in VATPAC due to traffic requirements. When AFV was initially brought across, we incorporated the major sectors (our current standard and non-standard) on the ASA NOTAM Map which generally features Class A airspace only (similar to how we don't have positions/frequencies for Sydney CTR or Perth CTR).

Hence the nearest receiver for TRT would likely have been located on the other side of Kakadu National Park leading to no coverage on the ground.

I can't think of a reason not to add a receiver where it would be in the real world and will process this when I return home. Thanks for your report! :D

    Hi Everyone,

As you may already know, the Oz Flight Sim Expo has moved into it's new home at the Wings Over Illawarra Airshow! This year, VATSIM will once again be exhibiting in the Oz Flight Sim Expo tent and we're on the lookout for volunteers to help with the event and assist in the production of content.

We'll be running a media stall showcasing videos, advertisements and live traffic on the network.

If you'd like to be involved on the day or contribute anything such as video's, photos or anything you think could showcase the amazing network we're a part of, please get in touch with me via email [email protected].

I'll be posting more details as the event comes closer but if you haven't been to Wings over Illawarra before, there's even more reasons to go this year (there's even a Drone Expo ;) )

    Cheers,

    Cal

  5. It's my pleasure to announce the re-appointment of Peter Adamos and Greg Barber to the Non-Executive Director role.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the applicants who put their name forward.

On behalf of the VATPAC Board, I also wish to extend a massive thanks to Dean Constantinidis for his dedication to the team. His input and guidance has definitely set some strong foundations in place which I'm sure will continue well into the future.

Here's an interesting morsel from a contact at the FAA, not sure how widespread the info is:

"As anyone in the flight sim world knows Microsoft is releasing a significant new sim software in 2020. They made a rare step to involve the US government before the release of the game. They want an approval from the FAA and two other agencies (here in the US) to use certain data elements in the game. There is an increased security risk with real-time data even for SIMS, and that is what we are evaluating. Microsoft rightfully assumed that VATSIM, PE, and others will possibly use some of this data and maybe even integrate it."

    Very cool!

Tonight I was given the privilege to have ATC while I flew between Melbourne and Sydney. Upon arriving at Sydney I had Kyle Varley as the TWR controller. Kyle was excellent he was extremely responsive and willing to check if a stand was available for me while I was on final. On top of this, he was really good at helping out other pilots on the ground. I can't wait to fly out of Kyle's control area again! Keep up the great work mate!

    Great work Kyle!

ML-WOL_CTR, Matt Kelly, who was extending services. Matt provided superb ATC and I was very impressed with his patience in dealing with some pilots who had less experience and were often asking him to repeat as they were getting to terms with flying with ATC. In addition, he was controlling ACA33, a visitor from North America who was unfamiliar with flying into SYD and he provided excellent tuition and coaching for this pilot. Despite covering a significant piece of airspace, Matt was able to maintain situational awareness of all flights under his control.

Keep up the amazing work Matt!

Just wanted to shout out for the top quality controlling earlier this avo. I was flying between MEL-SYD online with a mate from the US and we were both impressed with the quality of controlling from MEL-TWR and CTR. I didn't catch their names unfortunately but wanted to give a bit of a shout out for their. It was about 1600 Bris time.

  12. G'day All,

I wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of the VATPAC Board, to wish you, your friends and your family season's greetings and a wonderful and prosperous 2020.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. If it weren't for everyone in VATPAC, we wouldn't have regular ATC, plenty of traffic and such a fun, diverse and friendly community.

Some of the VATPAC Board and Staff team will be taking a break over the next couple of weeks as they take time away to celebrate the festive season. There may be some delays to ATC Training, Operations, I.T Issues and Events. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

We look forward to returning stronger than ever in 2020 as we continue working with the community on making a better VATPAC for everyone!

    Best Wishes,
    Callum Strawbridge
