  1. Hello everyone. I write on behalf of my family, the Quigley’s to your family of flyers to say thank you for all of your kind words both in this forum and via Dad’s email. Dad absolutely loved his flying and the community he was involved with. It gave him such joy and peace of mind.
Over the years we have sent him up in real planes to actually fly, most recently a Tigermoth, and we had hoped he might make it to his birthday this year for another flight, but alas it was not to be.
We were with him to the end and he passed peacefully in his sleep.

I understand that you held a memorial flight for him, flying his beloved DC-3 and I can’t tell you how touched we were to hear this and how chuffed he would have been to know. I hope he was smiling down on you.

We will be holding a memorial for him in November and will be making provisions for people from around the work to attend via video. I will post the details here when they become available.

From all of us here in Adelaide, Australia, thank you for the friendship, support and family you gave him.

    Warmest regards

    Gillian Quigley (daughter)

Learnt a new (old) word today! Although the dictionary didnt(sic) quite agree with that usage.

There are a great many things in the dictionary and else were with which I disagree.  Given the extremity of my antiquity you may safely assume I chose the obsolete meaning.  More in keeping with my state of being.

  3. Joe,

First, thank you for your very kind PM.

With respect to navdata and x-plane and navigraph, that is the Alpha and Omega.

It is a highly complex and technical explanation but wading through it wil answer your question.

I won't attempt to paraphrase it all beyond saying that I download the data from navigraph and navigraph puts it in my Custom Data folder and I go flying.   I have not been lost yet!

I think this is the essence:

The updated base – what is supplied by third-party providers

This layer is what advanced hobbyist users care about. They want updated data, because they want to fly online. Participation in the online networks usually requires fairly recent data. Aerosoft and Navigraph offer newest data by a monthly subscription. This data consists of the files:

    • earth_fix.dat
    • earth_awy.dat
    • earth_nav.dat
    • earth_hold.dat (starting with X-Plane 11.40)
    • CIFP/$ICAO.dat (where $ICAO is each airport with instrument procedures)

they must be located in $X-Plane/Custom Data/

These files completely replace the base layer of X-Plane. If these files are present, the X-Plane base layer is ignored. Note that because of the referential integrity, it is not possible to update just the earth_fix.dat and not the earth_awy.dat. Upon load, it is checked that all files are of the same cycle number. Mix-matching different cycles is not supported.

  4. I wonder if anyone has told him that there is nothing under the aircraft he flew in on?  Talk about risky!

Good work Nick, well explained.  This and the other videos you've done need a prominent spot somewhere on the web site.

  5. Thanks Greg.  I thought that might be the case regarding the codes.

With respect to RVSM, was there not an edict issued some years ago that all VATSIM aircraft shall be considered RVSM compliant?

But I do recall that on VRC there was a w or Not W on the tag which I have not noticed for a while.

That however, may be me and old age.

  6. Next question:
Does one enter the single code letter that comes closest to covering the aircraft's equipment, or, all the applicable code letters as per the ICAO standard?

    eg.
     ICAO FLIGHT PLAN
                              ----------------

    FF YMMMZQZX
    220957 CYULSBFP
    (FPL-QFA111-IS
    -B738/M-SDE2E3FGHIRWXY/LB1
    -YPAD1030
    -N0432F370 BENDO2 BENDO Y12 ARBEY ARBEY6A
    -YMML0051 YMAV
    -PBN/A1B1C1D1S1S2 DOF/200422 REG/N800SB OPR/QFA PER/C RMK/TCAS)

    Simbrief/LIDO format

  7. This may or may not be intended but there are options for turning both off.

    Other SET>Display settings>Runways>YPKA Karratha 08-26>name:  turn on/off

Do the same for YPKA Karratha 08I-26I

    ALSO!

    Other SET>Display settings>Free Text>YPKA_taxi:  turn 08 and/or 26 off

  8. No Kirk , I am not the authority to tell you what you can and cannot discuss in this forum

I put it to you that the forum only exists as long as its users are sufficiently mature as to exercise discretion in the matters raised for discussion.

In the seventeen years of my membership in VATPAC it has been generally recognized and accepted that this is a forum for discussion of aviation related matters and the simulation thereof.

The polite convention of refraining from the discussion of sex, religion and politics is a wise convention in any widely diverse community.

I am not of a mind to break this convention.

  9. The inclusion of those "flags" if that is what they are has been made without consultation with the membership of Gander Oceanic.

Action of this kind, is inappropriate in a non-political and non-partisan organization.

By virtue of its policies VATSIM is all inclusive and there is no further need for the display of tokens to indicate this.

  10. I believe that the people concerned have been spoken to and the situation resolved.

Having been a witness to one of the occasions I suggest that further discussion of this particular situation would  be unproductive.
