FSD is Flight Simulator Daemon, it is the basic architecture for any FS multiplayer network, it is used by VATSIM and IVAO, each network has their own unique version. It has been around for many years. A quick Google search reveals that FSD is plain text Protacol.

Any one can make an FSD network, a lot of clients are not exclusive to VATSIM.

I know that, I was asking what language it was written in.

The handling of a large number of connections to a single server is non-trivial and is not necessarily resolved by better hardware. There is work in (very slow) progress to improve the way FSD handles and processes connections, from the network level (how connections are treated - i.e. forked process, threaded, event driven, etc.) to things like how range-checking are performed.

These are important to the scaleability of FSD - for example, decreasing the update interval for clients from 5s to 1s is not possible today because the range checking (which is done with every position update) has to be done roughly n^2 times (where n is the number of total connections to the network) and this is not achieveable within a reduced update interval (geodesic calculations are far more computationally expensive than calculations on a Cartesian system).

There are ways to get around this issue, but they are non-trivial and of course requires someone to put in the time to make the change. In the past 12 months, there have probably been less than half a dozen people contribute to the code and most of those people have been too busy to make more than minor changes. (We need help!)

May I ask, what is FSD being written in?

  3. Hey all,

From next week, Mondays at 6PM till 8 PM, I'll be hosting the show "Milkrun Mondays with Trizzles" on Skyblueradio.com.

I'd like you all to listen and give me some feedback on it, I'll also be attending Oz flight sim Expo as part of Sky-blue Radio, and will do a couple of radio shows down there!!!

    Thanks guys,

    Trizzles

Sorry - When did this happen? When you say servers, do you mean an individual server or all of the networks 'servers'?

The VATSIM network can support 1500+ simultaneous users (as seen every 6 months with Cross the Pond).

I meant the server itself. Let's say SYD-1 gets 550 members, it'll crash. It's happened before with servers, which is why a new server was then provisioned

FSD does not have a 500 member limit.

I'm 95% sure that the current voice codec was written in the 21st Century. VATSIM was text-only before voice.

Also, the last update to FSD that we made was 5 months (not that long) ago.

Then how come the servers die after 550 members?

Thanks for the feedback Matt and a great question. I assume you are creating short cuts in addition to those provided in the package. The current version of the ES Package Installer was designed as an installer and it overwrites all existing files, so yes if you add extra shortcuts you will loose them next time you run the installer. Whilst it could be redesigned to do updates only, the work has been put into the Controller Client Updater instead. The aim is for a new user to run the ES Package installer once and then use the Controller Client Updater for updates.

The Controller Client Updater has been designed as an updater rather than an initial installer and preserves any changes you make to the profiles and TAAATS.txt. There are some settings that are "controlled" and will be updated if they have changed. At present these are  limited to the LastSession ATIS and airway lines in the .prf and the VoiceAtisBuilderUrl and SModeTransponders lines in the TAAATS.txt file. In addition to preserving user changes, files are only updated if they have changed since the last update.

A potential future enhancement being considered is the ability to configure the voice hardware settings for one profile and then have them copied to all profiles. Whilst these are not updated by the Client Updater, they are required in each profile, so are tedious to set up at present.

I do have a question as well, is there a way of updating our rating with the controller update?

What happens when I get C1, will I have to install the ES Package again?

If you're willing to spend some money Tristan, you might even be better off buying some new charts from a local pilot store.  Last I checked, most VTCs go for $11 or $12 and the Sydney VTC goes for about $15 (comes with the Sydney General Flying Guide).  Not sure what your intention with them is but you might be able to get a current chart for the same price as a second hand one.

I'm just looking for some old ones, as I'd like to do some realistic sim flying with my old scemery

Does anyone have any old paper charts, especially VTC/VNC they'd be willing to part with? Doesn't matter how out of date, or where they depict.

    They're almost considered a consumable in the training arena....also a novelty :)

I assure you they won't be used for real world navigation ;)

    Thanks in advance.

I'd like to jump on this bandwagon. I'm willing to purchase some old Sydney VTCs and charts.

Sure it does. His post said he is looking forward to improvements with the network infrastructure and specifically mentioned the voice codec and FSD servers.  He was not indicating any knowledge of what work is going on on either of them however I also would assume/hope that work is ongoing on all of those things in the interests of keeping VATSIM competitive with it's rivals.

Personally I think the open negativity shown towards some posts on these forums needs to be toned down a notch.

I see how Josh and Kirk could be confused. I meant then work on the FSD servers.

As FSD is what Vatsim uses to display traffic, Vatsim itself is running an old customised version of FSD. FSD is planned to be redeveloped for Vatsim, as if you look at Poscon, these are the core features that FSD lacks.

But I do agree with you Greg, the negativity does need to be toned down.

    20th Century... 1901-2000....

VATSIM was founded in 2001, it has only ever existed in the 21st century....

Sorry, 21st century. The voice codec that's current was made in the 20th century, late 1900's.  The voice codec is a 21st century development.

This is a bit off topic to the FS EXPO but is directly related to the topic of the AFV Beta testing however.

On Sunday the 25 Aug between 1300z - 1700z another larger stress test was held in conjunction with the UK major VATSIM event UK-Live where a large gathering of ATC were at a conference to cover almost every tower in the UK with over 550 pilots all online interacting with the ATC. There was a plethora of VFR, commercial even apparently an aerobatic display at one airport conducted during the Test which appears to have been an outstanding success.

Anyway one of the focuses of the test was for Xplane and the Xsquawkbox, swift clients. Also the implementation and testing of new voice coded ATIS. This I must say was almost as good as the ATC voice a vast improvement.

At this stage no indication as to when AFV will be released as the new voice system online. But it sounds sooner than later. Fingers crossed it is soon

The team are shooting by before CTP :) no promises but hopes.

    Hi All,

After doing some Airbnb digging for accommodation I found a few places if interested

There is also the oaks hotel which is a tad more expensive than some of the Airbnb's but is a viable option

@Bailey Brown commented at how it was good for its price and convenience etc

Another option would be Caravan parks, however they are quite some distance as seen below
image.png.a11975ef9faf2d703af1327505d42936.png  HARS is more towards the Oak Flats end of the map

If anyone's interested, you could stay in Sydney Metro area, and catch the train down. There are lots of BNBs that are also cheap.

This is not a VATPAC I.T issue, rather a VATSIM issue.

Rest assured it has been reported to VATSIM and I have been advised that the VATSIM Australia server will be re-provisioned this week. This is expected to resolve the controller information errors.

I'll provide further information as it comes to hand.

Sweet! I assume our server will be included in the modernisation of Infrastructure?
