  1. Hi Tracey,

Don't know if this answer is best served for when a whole fleet are grounded but, the technical term (used by pilots and engtineers) for an aircraft that is grounded (for whatever reason, tech, money, insurance, etc) is AOG. This simply means Aircraft On Ground. So you would hear in a briefing that Charlie (VH-DLC) is AOG, then you knew she wasn't flying that day.

I've never heard anyone say...The whole fleet is AOG! In that case we'de say, the company's stuffed, or something like that.

    Hope this helps.

    Daryl

In the RAAF, AOG stands for "Airweapon Operationally Grounded"

    just to add...

  2. Gday Chris,

Just to clarify we were not a VFR 'Newbie Group' at all but part of a regular weekly 'VFR Operations' that fly Fri/Sun nights and had flown the flight also on Friday night. Yes on occasion we get to marry up our flights when there is a 'Panic Stations' event at a major airport so it is always interesting and good experience. I do understand that arrivals would take precedence and this was not being questioned as this would be indicated by our patience to wait after being instructed to Standby.

My only comment and certainly not as criticism is that we would have been well and truly departed before the horde arrived as we had all requested and obtained Clearance by 0910z however when trying to get taxi clearance when there weren't many aircraft at the airport at all. This however compounded each time a new callsign called requesting clearance. Maybe I have it all wrong but if you have all that information and ready to go why are we pushed back behind new contacts starting and dont even have ATIS details or assigned squawk codes. As several times this occurred We simply sat there and saw new clearance requests or even simply taxi requests who didnt have even the basic ATIS information or assigned squawk codes jump straight over the top of us while we waited patiently on standby.

We are all there to share the Flightsim community. As to my comment it was re a 747 who after arriving on 34R decided to stop smack bang in the middle of a taxiway intersection which appeared to create a gridlock and caused a snowball effect with several other heavies behind banking up on the taxiway which I can imagine caused more drama than anything for the Ground ATC let alone when they pulled out onto 34L to taxi up to another exit taxiway to the terminals unannounced on either Ground or Tower. Doing it right in front of another heavy just about to touchdown on 34L which subsequently had to abort the landing and go around. From the look of it his back wheels were already on the ground.

I Reckon that pilots pucker factor was doing some rapid palpitations indeed when that happened LOL.

Anyway all credit to the troops who filled the roles of ATC......... Well Done

    Ross,

Good comments, good feedback. I feel your pain. Sorry about the "newbie" comments but saw that comment in one of the flight plans..... and just assumed. Shouldn't have of course.... Sorry mate. Based on your comments, yep, should've been handled more expeditiously. From my POV (TWR), and in the real world as well, I (as TWR) have NO idea what GND is doing clearance wise and taxy wise. The first I know of an acft is when he calls "ready" at a rwy holding point. What went before I have NO idea. So when you guys eventually called ready, (first I knew of you) I, and yourselves, were pretty much screwed... fait accompli, as they say.

Hindsight 20/20 is a wonderful thing.

Maybe the GND guy should have at least maybe suggested a Rwy25 dep (I assume you were up at Flight Facilities (or somewhere close to there)...... or just taxied you when you called for it and let me sort it out, not sure of GND's chain of thought there....

Anyhoo, all done and dusted, wish I could have done more for you guys, but there you have it.

You've taken the delays in good spirit and good on you for that. The last WF leg is a serious biggie and as they say "sh*t happens".

    Cheers

  3. G'day Ross,

Tsunami is the right word here!

I was the SY TWR controller at the time and was working my bum off ( in case you didn't notice). Sorry, but arrivals take priority over departures and (sad but true) VFR have last priority of all.

I thought it was somewhat ironic that you guys chose this night of all nights to fly a VFR "newbie" night. Prob the busiest online night of the whole year! Sorry that I couldn't get you away earlier, but the jet arrivals were just too close together. Also sorry for the "jiggles" line-up wise, but I had to get your faster acft away first (E120, BE58, C182) otherwise you'd be further screwed. On the upside, it must have been a impressive sight to see all those acft online, landing in front of you, taxying etc.....

Nonetheless, I hope you guys enjoyed your (eventual) flight and apart from the major departure delays, enjoyed the online experience.

Moral of the story, don't plan VFR departure during the WorldFlight final leg..!!

    cheers

  4. I agree with Shannon's decision, I also work with Qantas

This is a flight sim forum.

You can Follow the dispute on the news, PPrune, YSSY forum, and jetspotters

Most members here that feel the same about this as yourself are members of those forums.

hear hear........ this is not the appropriate forum

Can only lead to acrimony, axes to grind etc.

    Good quick call Shannon

  5. Its a Toyota TUG

The ones that push Aircraft are Push back Tractors, the reason people think they are TUG's is because of the brand name used by Stewart Stevenson and later became Tug Technologies, or as Qantas reconises them a Tow Motor

Im a Ground support equipment mechanic for Qantas

Thanks Kirk for that information, bloody years in the industry and I didn't know that.... All those years I thought the acft "pushers/pullers" were tugs......probably a throw back to my SY SMC days when the "acft push back/towers" went by the callsign "TUG".... Good info. Sorry about my ignorance!

    cheers

  6. Great site. Good luck with it, looks great.

Vast improvements since I last checked the site.

Not for me tho, I'll stick with civil aviation for now.

Also, I have some reservations about your "donations" link...... pretty sure thats against VATSIM policy... might want to check on that..

non-profit and all that... not sure, but prob worth a check.

    cheers

  7. Better add Rob (Granite) Grant into that mix. I wonder why he calls himself "Granite", Tuppy have you got any idea on this?

    Scanno

Nope. He'll have to justify it at the usual nickname grilling sometime after 7 Nov. I think Hooley has an alternative.

    cheers

  8. Fantastic night..... got close to the landing time.. I landed about 0934...(totally random... I had no strategy at all)

Great ATC (given some new/unfamiliar pilots.) James K,Steven, James W, Andrew, Matt, (hope i haven't missed anyone)

    All very very professional..........

    FANTASTIC night thanks everybody.

    cheers

  9. First Panic Stations for me also (believe it or not..) Not used to flying with the additional ATC, viz SY APP(N), SY APP(S), Director(s), Flow, et al.

Inbound from YMML, could someone provide a rough guide to the sequence of control positions I will encounter? (From BIK on..).

I like to program the stby freqs in advance.

  10.

Recenly I heard a Merlot arrival mentioned Tut tup - but alas I cant find it anywhere?

    Regards

    Don

Ahh... Don.. Red herring that one I'm afraid. That's an in joke between Terry Scanlon and myself. It's reference my penchant for a tipple of the "red" variety. He'll quite often issue me with Merlot or a Shiraz or CabSav arrival... :)

    Sorry to confuse!

    cheers

  11. Now I could have this wrong but didn’t Rob have this gig as well at some stage Tuppy? I’m sure I sent someone called Rob (in the late 80’s early 90’s) a few requests (that were obviously rejected for good reason)

    Steve

Not 100% sure, but I don't think so. Rob would've still been on approach in those years. I'm sure he will enlighten us (indignantly..) if it was the case.

The main man responsible for the, shall we say, unique, waypoints was one Garth Cooper. Wicked sernse of humour. Responsible for most of the witty ones, Waltzing Matilda off WA, Rugby World Cup? series (referenced above), the hamburger references near RK, LEAKY BOATS SINKK BN STARs, Puddy Tat series (near ML if memory serves.. older ones) etc. Sadly a lot never appeared on the actual charts for our enjoyment but only ever appeared in the Designated Airspace Handbook (DAH). Also referred to previously (I think) many waypoints are named after ATC's. Gotta call them something.

Tried to get one of my own, but at the time no duplicates were allowed and there was an existing TRIPP near Hawaii. Surprisingly the Yanks (whom I thought had no sense of humour) also apparently have some similar waypoint humour.

Wasn't there a previous thread on this? I seem to remember posting my dog's picture?

    Ramble over...

    cheers

    PS Yep previous threads..

  12. Ben

One person has control of all these names and you can submit a request if you know what the “going rate” is…

    Steve

When I was "that person" (temporarily) I did name a waypoint after my dog Tess.

    Waypoint TESSI on H62 BN-SY.

The main guy (back then) had a great sense of humour.

  13. Where's the other thread by Daryl?? ........

To quote (from memory) Question.. " Pax that NEED to get home"... "read".... pilots as well.. cemeteries are full of them.. "get home itis" is a killer... forget all the other parameters. Stay on the ground.

  14. Chris, before you go re installing the PMDG

If your using Squawkbox, it does not provide Upper Air winds

Yep, thanks Kirk, I am using SB3, I realise now that upper winds are not avbl. It's a PMDG B744 program issue. PMDG ascertains wind via its internal IRU's. I feel like a bit of a dork actually.... should have researched the problem a bit more before posting... i.e. RTFM

Will examine the PMDG B744 parameters a little more closely methinks... still may require a reinstall..still dodgy wind readouts.. will see..

    thanks for your input..

    cheers

    tuppy

  15. Thanks for the advice so far....... however....

    RULE 1 : Don't assume!

I assumed that the PMDG B744 extracted wind info from an external source (assumed VATSIM/SB). Not so apparently. After some research (should have done this prior to posting of course!) i.e RTFM, the acft extracts it's own winds via the 3 IRU's. So the no wind display is related to the acft program itself so that will require some troubleshooting in itself (reinstall probably)

    Sorry for the red herring

    cheers

  16. Gents,

Not sure where this should be posted... FS, Clients, Computers or Website and IT??

Over the last two or so days have not been able to access upper level winds.

Platform WIN XP, FS9, PMDG B744, OCEANIC server..

On departure I have wind information up to (about 2000... bit busy about then, hard to tell when it drops out...) but then no wind information at all.... nothing in the FMC at all. Not sure how all this stuff hangs together in VATPAC/VATSIM , servers and associated programs etc.

Is it me, PMDG, VATPAC or am I missing something basic here?

As I said, only happened over the last couple of days.

Not a biggie, sure can live with it, may annoy ATC tho!

    cheers
