  1. Sean,

Update to GLA would be good..... problem is I can't download the file. Click on it and computer hangs.... "Computer is expecting a response from you" error.. ??

    Any ideas?

  2. Can't reply in the post re Oceanic Server maintenance thread...

Since it has been returned to service Oceania does not appear in my server drop-down list.

    Have I missed something?

    thanks

  3. Hi Michael,

    Sorry for the long post...

I'd like to answer a few of your questions, but first we need to know what you actually want from this hobby of ours.

You have posted here and on VATSIM since 2004 (yes, 2004) on subjects many and various.

Network: Connecting to the network, does not appear to be an ongoing problem as you have managed to connect on many many occasions over the years, albeit for very brief times. So that's fixed.

Aircraft: To date you've looked at C172, BE58, CRJ700, Lear, BE60 etc. and even a B787..... this makes it quite difficult for us to offer any meaningful navigation/instrumentation type of instruction or assistance. Perhaps you should consider initially settling on a relatively basic aircraft (C172 or even the Baron). That might make things a bit easier all round.

Scenery: your requests for extremely accurate topographic scenery is noted, not sure what accuracy you are after, or if that scenery even exists, but we can look into that.

Computer setup : Perhaps multi screen displays (TV's?) and "breadboards" (not sure what that is) could wait until you have mastered the basics of flying, navigation etc......

Moving to LM P3D or XPlane : not a good idea at this stage, FSX is complex enough, nor perhaps should you be too worried about aircraft dynamics, although you say you have dabbled in that area of design.

In order to answer all your questions and get you moving forward in this world of ours, perhaps you need to more specifically define exactly what you need most at this point in time. E.g. what aircraft do you intend to fly (mainly), what type of flying (General Aviation, Regular Public Transport, Military etc), what specific instrument and/or navigation or other issues you have.

Feel free to PM me about this or better still, contact the VATPAC Training Dept. Someone will, I'm sure, be able to come up with a more structured approach to getting you where you want to be. This may yield better results for you than numerous posts on varied and sometimes seemingly random subjects.

    cheers

    chris

P.S. Did you have any luck finding Jack Lynch? I knew him well at Williamtown in the mid 70's. Kept in touch over the years. I should have a contact phone number if you don't have one...

  4. Michael,

IMHO, maybe your energies would be better served in trying to connect to VATSIM and/or sorting out your navigation questions first. Given your plethora of posts on both subjects here and at VATSIM over the years....

Perhaps put the advanced electronics on hold for a while until you have mastered the basics, otherwise you run the risk of confusing the issues.

    Just a thought...

    cheers

  5. I'm with Jackson. Straight to P3Dv2.

I've ditched FSX, never ever to be resurrected. Your new box will be ideal. Good M/Board, CPU and GPU. One of the major features of P3D is the way it shares the loads between the GPU and CPU, unlike FSX.

Need any more clarification, ask away here..... more than enough P3D users to advise....

(See also previous thread.... "Question on P3D")

    cheers

  6. Justin,

    What Will said....

Best money I ever spent. FSX consigned to the bin, never to be resurrected.

P3Dv2 is a quantum leap forward, possibly what FSX would have become had development continued (although I doubt it).

Most add-on developers are well into updating their products to work in P3D. As Will said, v2 is not an upgraded FSX.

For info, the only issue I have with the NGX is the permanent TCAS display, (there is a fix for that, but requires "tinkering", I couldn't be bothered..) ...other folk have probs with FMC refresh, but mine is ok.

I am one very, very happy camper indeed!

  7. Hools,

Same unit, similar problem, but only with one lever. Before I looked into the full service routine, I tried this (also courtesy of YouTube).....

SuperCheap Auto.... Can of CRC Automotive Electronic Cleaner. Liberal squirts into the quadrant, wiggle (technical term) the levers through full range several times, let dry (evaporates), test.

Repeat if required. Not a definitive fix, but worked for me. Probably only if the pots are not too worn/dirty. Worth a try?

  8. Clive, I hear you!

I use EZdok Camera Addon for FSX (EZCA) (works in P3D btw). Personally, I would NEVER fly another aircraft without this addon.

Highly customisable, although a bit fiddly to set up camera views initially. Once done, easy, and easy to adjust camera views. Change views instantly (or pan, to simulate head movement) using yoke/joystick hat-switch or number keys.

    Excellent program.

  9. Thanks Adrian (and Ben).

    That was quick!

Looks very nice, also fixes the missing taxiways in the default scenery near Rwy25 as well.

P3D is certainly the way of the future for mine. Also believe there is payware SY scenery in the pipeline (Fly Tampa?)

    Again, thanks.

  10. Yes please! Tore my hair out trying to work out why it wouldn't work.

Read somewhere it's to do with a "taxyway invisible" flag set during the design process. ??

(Not sure of the exact parameter name..)

  11. Not sure who the admins of Vatpac Facebook are, but a question please...

I posted a comment on the "Panic Stations" announcement. This comment has apparently been deleted. May I ask by whom, and, why?

  12. The efforts of the controllers was superb given that the reports I received during the debrief (as well as what I personally heard on the various frequencies) clearly showed that only about 10% of pilots actually knew the correct procedures for Moorabbin which really put the panic into panic stations for the controllers.

Agreed, controllers were excellent. Good job. Also noticed the lack of pilots D Class procedures knowledge. Thought this a bit odd, given the lead in time to this event. Charts, procedures, procedure maps etc freely avbl, (esp ERSA). Moreover, the links provided in the forum were really excellent. Charts, how-to maps, procedures details and particularly the CASA walkthrough of all the VFR approach routes.

You can lead a horse to water..... ;-)

Only disappointment for me was landing at 10:59... couldn't slow the Twotter down quite enough.... excellent fun, and the event as planned.... different!

  13. Here ya go....

PMDG JS41 has rubber de-ice boots. (3 on each wing). As outlined by the posters above is how boots work. Unlike electrical/heating systems, boots are only effective after the ice has accumulated.

    From the manual :

    "B. Control and Indication

The airframe de-icing system is controlled manually from the flight deck by switches in the roof panel.

Switches in the roof panel control the operation of the de-icing boots. The

AIRFRAME switches are labelled AUTO CYCLE/OFF/RESET, CCT1, CCT2 and CCT3. The AUTO CYCLE/RESET switch is a rocker switch spring loaded to the center OFF position. The CCT switches are push button. Listed below each CCT switch is the section of the aircraft de-icing system operated by the switch.

When the AUTO CYCLE/RESET switch is set to AUTO CYCLE, two full cycles of the de-icing boots occur. A timer switch controls the AUTO CYCLE operation and the order in which the boots operate is as follows:

    - CCT1 - 6 Seconds

    - CCT2 - 6 Seconds

    - CCT3 - 6 Seconds

A second cycle occurs immediately and then OFF.

During the cycle of operation green captions above the CCT switches come on. 17 psi pressure switches in each of the three circuits control the operation of these captions.

The captions read as the pressure switches operate.

The de-icing boots remain inflated while the CCT switch is in the ON position. They deflate when the switch is released to the OFF position."

And Matt and Ben, you DO have to keep selecting them! Spring loads to OFF after the two cycles complete. Nuisance, but as far as I know, seems realistic.

  14. Robert,

If you have the means and like flying the baron, treat yourself to the Real Air BE60 or the Carenado BE58

You won't be sorry. Although looking at the screens of the Carenado offering it might suffer from the same inHg issue in the default gauge, worth asking them about it first.

I'll second that, the RealAir Duke is an absolute cracker! Carenado Baron in second place.. Duke has Altimeter in Mb, Baron in inches Hg.

Easy fix, nice and easy conversion table avbl from Air Services Australia site, ERSA if memory serves. Print and laminate... voila.

  15. Which is the main reason for hosting the event at a secondary airport :teeth:

Although I wouldn't go as far as to say "no jets".....just "no heavy jets".

No heavy jets ?? No heavy jets?? If memory serves I accepted the challenge a year or so ago and landed a 747 at Tamworth legally.... this time at (insert destination here) ?

Nah... too much hard work, rest on my laurels...
