And your decision that supported the 'vast majority' of VATPAC users was made with that lack of understanding, then?

Not only my decision but made with an understanding of the best way to support the 'vast majority' of VATPAC users.  Not the vocal minority who became vocal after the fact.

Less convenient also, but doesn't require constantly changing settings files.

Why is changing settings files necessary?  Just set a PTT and if you like, a Toggle VAD keybind.

  2. Hi Paul,

I brought up the workplace as an example of another evironment where there were rules that govern peoples behaviour, as in it's not unique to VATPAC.  Bill seems to think those rules don't apply in his workplace and that's fine.  I suspect they do apply but are just not enforced, until such time as someone decides to enforce them.

In any case, the rules are here to stay.  If someone doesn't like them they are free to use other services.

  3. Hi Bill,

Discord has been chosen as the solution the best supports the vast majority of VATPAC members and the organisation itself.   If some individuals don't find it suits them, I'm sorry but how is that VATPAC's fault?

Anyone is of course allowed to purchase their own teamspeak server and invite their friends to join them.  As anyone is also allowed to start their own discord server and invite their friends to join them.  Anyone is allowed to open their own skype chat or use facebook messenger and open a voice call.

There are so many solutions to any problem and VATPAC can't choose them all.  If you don't want to set up a PTT in discord, that is your choice.  If you want to speak with an individual you can start your own private call.

Regarding the policy: The content of the policy took considerable time and effort to develop and is intended to best support and protect both the organisation and it's members.  Again, if you don't agree with the policy, you are free to choose not to use the service.  Of the examples you mentioned, if you walked into your workplace and called someone "butterfluff" and this offended them, you have broken the rules.  If you said "XXX" about colleague number 2 to colleague number 3 and they passed it on to colleague number 2, who took offense, you have broken the rules.  If you entered the name Bill Teale on your application for a home loan but all your IDs called you William, you would not get the loan.

  4. Hi Nick,

This is because the aircraft departed way ahead of it's flight planned departure time and the flight plan track has fallen too far behind.  Try...

    .est [callsign] [fix] [time] enter

So in your picture JST560 is actually up near Mudge somewhere so it would be...

    .est JST560 MUDGI 0610z enter

Just pick a realistic estimated time for the waypoint and the track should correlate to the radar paint.  The waypoint has to be in the flight plan.

There's also a way to do this with a series of middle clicks on the flight plan track and the radar paint but I'd have to open up euroscope to work out what it is.

It's when aircraft suddenly appear in congested airspace with no warning that there's a problem

Like when a pilot suddenly realises they've been disconnected from xPilot and hit the reconnect button?  Good thinking VATSIM.

In seems unnatural, for an en-route controller to provide aerodrome services, although Euroscope and VATSIM make it quite straightforward. Would it be huge violation of policies to not provide such services and indicate "No aerodrome services, request airways clearance at holding point" to pilots? Essentially, treat major aerodromes like non-towered Essendon, regardless of traffic volumes.

It may be unnatural and unrealistic but it's an adjustment we make for the online environment to compensate for missing control positions (that doesn't ordinarily happen in the real world) and to provide a service to as many pilots as possible.

VATSIM GRP and the VATPAC Controller Positions and Ratings Policy make an allowance for "when traffic load permits".  Meaning:

    Quote

    at Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville, the controller of that normal sector shall assume responsibility for the terminal control area, provided traffic load permits;

    and...

    Quote

If Tower for the primary aerodrome under a terminal control area assumed by the controller of a normal sector under subsection 3.2.4.1 is unavailable, that controller shall assume responsibility of all of the aerodrome control functions at that aerodrome, provided traffic load permits.

The only reason a controller can elect not to provide top-down services all the way to the ground for their sector's primary aerodrome is "My enroute airspace is too busy."

"I don't want to" is not a valid reason to leave pilots without a service.

Our VATSIM overlords now require affiliated VAs to publicise and run an event every 3 months.  So here we go...

Event Date: Monday 3rd Feb 2020
    Event Time: 0700-1200z
    Event Place: Melbourne YMML
Who's invited:  All VeeOz Virtual Airlines Flight Crew, plus anyone else who happens to be participating in Milk Run Monday at the same time.
ATC: Generally pretty well sorted for this location at this time of week.

  8. HI Quigs,

I've given up on vATIS until such time as it connects every time I want it to.  I have begun preparing some preset text templates to use in the AFV text-voice system for the time being just so I can stop mucking aroundw ith ATIS so much when I'm trying to control.

It would be great if the VATSIM team would actually give some feedback on these issues.  Seems they released all this guff, spent much of thiier time fixing server glitches and have now got it to the point where is suits most people (read USA and Europe) and then moved on to other things.

    Quote

but wholesale adding words based on context seems excessive and takes the ability away from controllers to actually make their ATIS work according to divisional standards

Old quote but just noticed this stuff myself.  Try putting "CURFEW OPERATIONS IN PROGRESS".  You get "Cur....Few clouds operations in progress."  :)  Had to mispell the word to get it to work!

I get the impression that most people have given up on trying to make this work.

    Hi Allan,

Are you referring to getting it to work on MACOS?  Or getting it to work at all?

I suspect your easiest solution (and I suspect the one "most people" have gone to) to get you flying is to focus on Windows for the moment and get XPilot working.  http://xpilot.clowd.io/ the instructions are quite easy to follow and the model matching although not the best in accuracy is by far the easiest setup, plus it doesn't require any extra software or plugins like the other clients may.  Remember, to get this working properly, you must disable any other voice client plugin (xsquawkbox, swiftbus) in XPlane.

Regarding the Com radio stepping over frequencies, this is not a VATSIM issue but an issue with your aircraft/sim.  Once the client is working, try the dot command (.com1 127.770) in your client and see what tunes on your radio.

Lol....  You know you can turn all that stuff off right?

Unfortunately a great many bits of software are written with it in mind and are a pain in the butt to get working on other platforms.  You win some, you lose some.
