  1. Matthew,

Yes, move onto VFR then IFR.  It will help enourmously.  Please note that much of the content is based on the US so there will be some differences to what you experience in VATPAC airspace but it will give you the basics and more.

This is getting on a bit but it was very helpful for me with basic aircraft handling, terminology etc. Try it out and see if it interests you.

  2. Good advice Brendan.  The beauty of a small SEA and one of the reasons lihhties are used for training is that they are more forgiving and if something doesn't work, you adjust next time.

Don't forget that with a 20kt steady headwind actually results in a slower groundspeed than in calm conditions.  Unless of course you increase your airspeed to fully account for wind.  Landing with less flap in windy conditions only means a faster indicated approach speed and a higher margin to stall until in the flare.

  3. As Joshua has said, it's in there to avoid confusion and to reiterate what aerodrome the call is for.  Not only to some aerodromes share a distinct frequency but many share the standard 126.7 as their CTAF frequency and it's not uncommon to hear a call for an aerodrome many miles away.  Since the first bit of the call is the location, as a receiving station I'm often not prepared for the information at that point so the reiteration at the end is really useful to confirm whether or not I need to take note of the call.

On VATSIM as you say, not as critical as in the end nobody dies if we get it wrong.  Personally I wouldn't make a "push" call, I would make a full taxi call and then a line-up call, both times repeating the location at the end.

  4. Minutes

Attendance: Jackson Harding (JH), Zach Biesse-Fitton (ZBF), Greg Barber (GB), Nick Naumovski (NN), Sam Keast (SK), Available VATPAC Staff.

    Apologies: Alan Cooke

GB opened the meeting at 1032 AEST, welcoming everyone and handing over the meeting to JH.

JH outlined the broad circumstances and timeline surrounding the recent resignation of Callum Strawbridge as Division Director as well as some information regarding the departure of other senior staff and board members.  He continued to explain the options considered by himself and Alan Cooke (VATOCE1) for moving the division and the region forward.  Thes options included:

    - Merging VATPAC and VATNZ and using existing resources to run both areas.

    - Splitting the region into 3 VACCs (NZ, YB and YM).

    - Asking existing staff to step up and run the division.

The option determined as the best course of action was to appoint an administration panel of an interim Division Director and Deputy Division Director, who's remit it would be to continue to administer VATPAC while appointing either interim or permanet replacement board members.  The administration panel will consist of Zach Biesse-Fitton, who recently resigned from his VATSIM Board of Governors role as interim VATPAC1, and Ray Lang from VATOCE as Deputy Division Director.  JH stressed that although Ray is an appointment from outside of VATPAC, he will provide some impartiality in the process.

Question from SK:  Will the recently advertised VATPAC5 position be appointed as an interim or permanent position given the recruitment process began prior to Callum's resignation?

JH: This will likely be an early decision by ZBF and RL.  Given the progress made already in this process it may be feasible to continue that process to a permanent appointment but that decision is ultimately up to the admin panel.

JH continued to explain some upcoming change in VATSIM structure.  Regional directors (the executive committee) will be removed from the VATSIM structure and the 6 VATSIM regions to be combined into 3.  These new regions will be overseen by a new BoG Position VP (Region), while the existing VP Regions will be removed.  The 3 new regions will be:

    - Americas (7 Divisions)

    - Europe/Middle East/Africa (7 Divisions)

    - Asia/Pacific (8 Divisions)

The individual divisions will remain unchanged for now.

The removal of Regional Directors will benefit the network in a couple of ways:

    - Closer relationship between division and the BoG.

    - Removes a relatively small coordination role from the structure.

JH went on to explain that the newly formed VP Regional positions will have broader powers in the direction and accountability of divisions.

Question from GB:  What measures will be in place to ensure these newly appointed regional VPs will be fair and reasonable in their expectations and direction of divisions?

JH: They will be directly accountable as part of the BoG and various clauses in the Code of Regulations will support this expectation.

Question from NM:  Will a regional staff be appointed to manage inter-division issues such as events, training etc?

JH:  That will be up to the individual VPs but that would be a reasonable method of managing a region.

Question from GB:  How and when will these changes be communicated to the VATPAC membership?

Allan Cooke will make appropriate announcements regarding the appointment of the admin panel in the coming days and ZBF and RL will follow with their own communications.

In closing Jackson commented how important VATPAC is to the network.  While VATPAC membership represents only 2.9% of VATSIM membership, it's activity and leadership in the community far outweigh the figures.  It is hoped that the divisional staff present or otherwise will continue to go about their roles during this transition.

  6. To the valuable members of VATSIM Australia Pacific,

I wanted to take this opportunity to announce that Harrison Scott recently provided notification to the remaining Board members that he does not intend to continue in the role of VATPAC Director Operations effective immediately.  This decision has been under consideration for a while although the recent departure of Callum from Director Division was a determining factor on the timing of this announcement.

Speaking on behalf of the Board, I would like to recognise the efforts of both Callum and Harrison.

Harrison has been nothing but professional in his execution of a role that is one of the more difficult roles in the division.  Operations involves a lot of data, documentation and what could only be described as rather boring and unrewarding work, however he has managed to effectively lead his team in a time of major change within VATPAC and VATSIM.  Thank you for a fine job Harrison and I (and I am sure the remainder of the VATPAC staff) wish you well for the future.

Callum came on board as VATPAC1 just over 12 months ago and hit the ground running to move the Division forward and build on the development of his temporary predecessor.  Through his tenure he has built a strong team and oversaw the implementation of major change including but not limited to Audio for VATSIM (something that many will be unaware involved considerable manual labour), the new and much more functional (so far) VATPAC Discord Server and laying the  groundwork in bringing about an all new controller client for your region.  Part of the reason for the somewhat deflated feeling within the senior staff team in recent days is brought on by the fact that Callum was in some resects the glue that kept us coming back to the table engaged and motivated to moving the division's policies forward to bring a more inclusive and active community together.

Again, Thank you for your efforts and I hope to see you return to the VATPAC staff team soon, where I expect you have a lot more to contibute.

    Regards
    Greg Barber
    VATPAC Non-Executive Director

  7. Hi Lucas,

We have been through this before and we can get through it again.

I am a little close to the action to go into too much detail but you are well within your rights to ask questions.  Hopefully someone higher up can answer them.

  8. Not sure of the technical aspects but I'm sure it would be possible by assigning certain "transmitters" to a sector.  Perhaps something VATPAC can talk to the technical team about.

We did have a system for a short while specifixc to accumap which would parse the controller information assuming the sectors had been identified correctly.  Unfortunately that went the way of the dodo.

  9. Luke did very well,

I didn't hear what he was dealing with, but it was apparent it was frustrating for him when he just wanted to provide the best service he could.

I understand supervisors were involved however I don't know if any action was taken.

So if you are departing Melbourne, and not intending to fly a SID, and intending to use the ML VOR for tracking, then file DCT ML. If you are departing Melbourne, and intending to fly a SID, file DCT to the SID waypoint (DOSEL, etc). If you are departing an airport and not intending to use a navaid, just use DCT.

Nothing like telling the full story and including all the appendices.

In all seriousness, Nick's video (and I believe this is his intention) will go a long way to help most VATSIM pilots flight plan to a standard that is generally acceptable for VATSIM pilots.  Filing from the colocated aid is indeed a totally valid technique and is really the only way to file for most airports in the country.

Well done to Nick for putting this together.  I hope that it helps people a lot.  Of course there are some of us who already have the background and skills go that little step further for realism and I expect those people won't get much out of the video.  But then again, I don''t think the video is pitched at those people.

  11. Not to mention the fact that this frequency confusion happens in the real world too.  Didn't hear that CTAF call, oh whoops I was still on CTR or had turned my comm2 down without realising.  Just because we are simulated, doesn't mean we are any different to the real licensed guys.
