I would have noticed all my DAP numbers being out.

Lol.  Becoming more the norm with all the DAPs buried in SUPs at the moment.  Try controlling Melbourne!

In all seriousness, I can't see any reason in the ESE to suggest these sectors should light up, nor can I reproduce the issue.

  2. Tried with both 1907 and 1909, can't reproduce the problem either.  Kirk, is it possible you have an older AIRAC than this installed?  You have said you have "recently got back into controlling". :)

  3. Just want to remove some of the emotion and lay out some facts:

    1. Mentoring or training is available through the VATPAC training department for all members.  Not just those seeking a higher ATC rating.  Email training(at)vatpac(dot)org and make your request.

    2. There are many good ideas expressed above.  Unfortunately none of them are new and those making the decisions on division policy are aware of that, and of the reasons why some of those ideas have not come to fruition in the past.  That's not to say they are not worthy of consideration and robust debate.  As the landscape changes there may or may not be resources available to pursue them.

    3. VATPAC as a divison, trains all it's new controllers to an S2 level which allows that controller to choose any position up to Tower as soon as they get their rating.  There are some requirements that the student must meet before they are engaged by the training department to provide practical mentoring and assessment.  In short these requirements are, watch for a while, read the theory content which takes an enormous amount of work to prepare and maintain, pass a relatively short exam based on that theory component.  None of these pre-requisites require that a user have a level of proficiency in the use of the client software, however some basic orperational information is given during the theory course and further information is available elsewhere on the net.

    4. Just taking a guess here but I've been around the block a few times and I would say that the majority of student controllers who are properly prepared for the practical component receive their S2 rating within 6-8weeks of passing their exam. There is always a balance between the time it takes and the quality of the controller that is produced.  New controllers can be endorsed within a week, but they won't know what they are doing and will not provide the required standard of service to pilots.

    5. VATPAC does not have any subsidiary VACCs/ARTCCs like other divisions.  We train with generic information that is applicable to the entire FIR (2 in fact!).  Other training organisations may be able to delivery highly skilled controllers that are limited to a few locations.

    6. The top-down policy is just a policy and if the controller has a reasonable expectation that a higher position will be filled (say it's 6pm on a Monday) and they want to control a specific position, nobody is going to get on their back about opening APP before CTR is online.

  4. Applies only to Milk Run Monday and only to the positions listed in the NOTAM.  I have pinned this NOTAM as it is still active.  Remember that you should seek to provide a service to the greatest number of members.  So, no opening ML_DEP when SY_APP is offline or vice versa.  Also, no opening an DEP position when you could open a vacant SNO or WOL position.  As always, and as Tracy said, opening these positions should always be in consideration of the enjoyment of others on the network which usually involves speaking to them about it first.

Tristan, the option to include more positions was considered at the time and it was deemed to be unecessary given the typical traffic levels.  These traffic levels have not changed.

Instructions advise that If you are planning to fly via airways (Mainly IFR,) VATPAC recommends the following routes to assist in Traffic Flow - Charts for all 3 aerodromes can be found here.

Unfortunately as I am not a controller I cannot answer all the questions and therefore cannot get to the charts. I know one can get the charts elsewhere but if a statement says they are available here (for flyers/pilots) then they should be.

    Hi Daniel,

I think that may be an incorrect link.  All Airservices charts are available via VATPAC ATC Assist (available to everyone) or via the airservices website.

Thanks for pointing out the error.  Hope you enjoyed the event.

I meant the server itself. Let's say SYD-1 gets 550 members, it'll crash. It's happened before with servers, which is why a new server was then provisioned

Yep, because Tristan Garratt knows more about FSD Development than VATSIM VP Tech Dev and knows more about why a new server was provisioned.  I assure you this is not why.

May I ask, what is FSD being written in?

    You may ask.  :)

  7. Hi Rob,

/PAXON and /PAXOFF is how an individual pilot turns it on or off.  The data that is used to populate the systems is a data feed from VATSIM.  While not much has changed I don't know what work has been done in VATPAX to cope with different login patterns for VATSIM (eg. under the new code of conduct you can now log in as Robert Grant, Robert, Rob, Rob Grant or whatever your VATSIM ID is).

  8. Hi Rob,

I haven't been involved with it since my last post above.

I suspect some issues would have arisen when people started logging in using only their VATSIM ID and the whole data feed would have changed.

The controller information should contain whether a controller is extending and If they are extending, where to. While you’re right, we could locate this in the client, whois clients have become a major resource that almost everyone uses on the VATSIM network.

That still doesn't answer Kirks question... They are currently working on the FSD Servers?

Sure it does. His post said he is looking forward to improvements with the network infrastructure and specifically mentioned the voice codec and FSD servers.  He was not indicating any knowledge of what work is going on on either of them however I also would assume/hope that work is ongoing on all of those things in the interests of keeping VATSIM competitive with it's rivals.

Personally I think the open negativity shown towards some posts on these forums needs to be toned down a notch.

  11. Hi Bryan,

There's no actual rules on it other than "see and be seen".  Generally VFR traffic outside controlled airspace (OCTA) will turn them off but nothing saying it can't be on especially if you are aware other traffic is around.  The statement you quote above is more to do with IFR traffic remaining within controlled airspace.

Huh, information i had researched suggested printed wind information like on METAR are true, while ATIS, automated weather reports and local information is magnetic. Is this true or not?

Bryan,  you are correct, I should have specified.  Written wind information is degrees true.

It only just occurred to me that automated ATIS broadcasts on VATSIM are derived from the METAR and do not make this correction.
