  1. Hi Harry,

    Welcome!

Stick with XP11.  Far superior to FSX.  Good idea to start small and work your way up.

    1. For authenticity, yes.  But not required.  You can get used to the twist motion fairly quickly but it just won't feel like you're flying without pedals (especially GA aircraft where turn coordination is all manual).

    2. There are too many to mention.  Do a search and you'll find what you need.

    3. You can fly anywhere you want but in the beginning it's probably best to stay local where we can help you adjust.

    Keep the blue side up.

  2. Hi James,

    Welcome back!

By far the best 737 experience with XPlane in a 737 is the Zibo Mod. It's not compatible with XP10 though so an update would be required.  It's a free addon to XP11 and has a very impressive suite of features, far better than defaults and almost reaching the heights of PMDG quality for Prepar3d. Check out some of the videos and get inspired.

Squawkbox will do fine for XP10.5, not sure on the latest version though.

Xplane 11 can be updated with a Navigraph subscription.  Not sure about XP10.

EZPushback is fine.  Probably want ActiveSky or some other weather software.

You can do something with the setup you have but for a small outlay (depending on your PC specs), an update to Xplane11 will not let you down.

    Good luck!

  3. You can lead a horse to water.....

One of the issues with compliance with this policy is that in a changing airspace picture you need to remember to update your controller info.  Sometimes that's low on your priority list, especially when you've just taken on an additional sector.

At the end of the day, we can provide the local policies and encourage their use.  We can't really fine anyone for being a bit lazy.

Perhaps Im misreading the situation, and the people in question are maliciously setting out to ruin as many peoples evening as possible, in which case by all means throw the book at them.

That is the complaint that is being made and unless you are there, you can't really draw conclusions.  The answer is to call a SUP when it happens so they may investigate the true intentions of these members and begin to form a base of evidence.  If a SUP makes a note about a complaint last Wednesday, this Wednesday and a few more Wednesdays involving the same incident and the same group, then you have your base of evidence to act.  One incident in isolation is not enough, but when you establish a pattern, the intent becomes clearer.

So to that end.  Next time this happens, call a SUP and explain the situation to them.  They may not be able to act immediately but since this is a common occurance, ask to have your grievance recorded for future reference.

  5. As I understand it this is a select group of specific pilots who seem to conduct these operations at event locations when they know an event is in progress.  As Tracy says, call a SUP when this is happening.  There are a number of VATSIM rules that are designed to prevent this.  At the very least the preamble to the Code of Conduct states...

VATSIM does not care to engage in the constant policing of its Members. If a problem should arise online between two or more Members which cannot be resolved by the parties in a quick manner or if it affects the enjoyment of VATSIM by other Members or could hinder the operation of the network, the parties involved should check to see if a Supervisor or an Administrator is online to help resolve the matter

In additiona these people may be in breach of A1 and A10.

  6. I have been advised so by an Air Traffic Controller.  I then researched the AIP, and sought clarification on it's content as it was a little confusing to me as well.  The AIP lists a pilot readback for "SQUAWK (code) [AND IDENT]", it doesn't list a pilot readback for "SQUAWK IDENT" which is provided as an ATC instruction only.

Transponder operations that require a readback as follows:

    - SQUAWK (code):  eg. "SQUAWK (code)"
    - SQUAWK (code) AND IDENT: eg. "SQUAWK (code) AND IDENT"
    - RECYCLE [(mode)] (code). eg. "RECYCLING [(mode)] (code)"
    - CONFIRM SQUAWK (code). eg. "SQUAWKING (code)"

Transponder operations that do not require a readback but rather an action:
    - SQUAWK NORMAL
    - SQUAWK IDENT
    - SQUAWK STANDBY
    - SQUAWK MAYDAY

There are also some other operations to do with ADS-B identification that we don't really simulate.

  7. Good initiative and generally good info.  The only suggestion I would make is to put a dot-point summary at the top of what to expect and what not to expect on arrival to Alice.  For example:

    - Expect to report reaching an altitude.
    - Expect the controller to instruct you to report your position (he/she cannot use a radar display to pinpoint this).
    - Expect to be given direct tracking to a NAVAID, FIX or VISUAL REFERENCE POINT.
    - If instrument approaches are in use, expect to be instructed to hold either overhead AS VOR or at another published point on the approach chart.
    - Expect to be required to fly your aircraft and maintain altitude accurately.

    - Do not expect vectors to final.
    - Do not expect to be issued a heading to fly.
    - Do not expect ATC to know exactly where you are at all times.

Half the time it's those who think this will be just the same as flying into Melbourne and at worst, ATC can help me find the ILS, that make a mess.

  8. Never said you have to be able to see the runway.  Just that you need to be able to navigate to it with visual reference to the ground.

"REPORT VISUAL" is only ever required to be asked of an IFR flight and means to report when you can accept a visual approach (during the day you do not need to have the runway in sight to do this), that is you expect you can continue in VMC until you land.

"REPORT FLIGHT CONDITIONS" is asking you to report the conditions you are in right now.  That is, "VISUAL", "IN CLOUD" etc.  Not "Well it's a nice day up here and the engine's running smooth as silk and my wife says she doesn't even feel as sick as she usually does.  I think I'll relax with a nice cold one when I get home."

Note: IFR or VFR are not meteorological conditions that you need to report.

  9. Hi Guys,

    Sorry, forgot about this.

    The correct answer is D.

There is no verbal response required from the pilot.  Pressing the Ident button on your transponder is all the response you need.

Thos who answered D, you may buy yourself a self isolation beverage of your choice.

I'm also not 100% sure on this, but I suspect the radar SID may only be availble AH, as Mackay Approach is only operational when the tower is closed, and the service is provided from Brisbane

    This^^

It gets an IFR aircraft into the Class E so Mackay Approach can then identify and provide a control service to the previously acknowledged route.  Outside TWR HRS the Class D is reclassified to Class E down to 700FT AGL.

  11. Hi Daryl,

It is unlikely you will get realistic ATC coverage at Parafield.  There simply isn't online enough traffic for a controller to log on there and enjoy themselves.  Controllers tend to go where there is a reasonable expectation that they'll encounter traffic, and pilots often trend towards location where there is a reasonable expectation they will receive an ATC service.

If you want to test everything works, try Essendon or Bankstown on a Monday night where you will no doubt get a service from Melbourne or Sydney Approach and who knows, if traffic starts popping up at these secondary aerodromes during these times, you may even see and EN_TWR or a BK_TWR online.

Don't lose hope.  It's a hobby for us all and the enjoyment factor and lure of interaction gets us online.

  12. These measures are more for Airservices communication to operators regarding airport efficiency etc than something pilots are thinking about when they are on the rollout.  It goes something like this....

Airline complains to Airservices that they are spending to much money holding at TAREX.

Airservices counters with, well if more pilots took the rapid we could improve efficiency.

  13. The aiway.txt file contains airways, not airports.  I would suggest that if the RTE is not displayed for a flight plan, there is something wrong with the flight plan or your airway.txt is out of date.  There are instructions in the Readme of the VATPAC package describing how to update the airway.txt.

    Hi Nick

Yes what you have there is all  to do with Visual APPROACH.

The topic started off with REPORTING VISUAL (not to do with APPROACH) , this has nothing to do with the APPROACH. Visual is just being able to navigate with reference to the ground and keeping clear of cloud.

    Topic has changed a lot.

    Michael

As per AIP the phrase "REPORT VISUAL" means "the pilot is to advise when able to conduct a visual approach".  This means, are you able to fly from your present position along your expected track to the runway threashold while maintaining visual reference to the gound?  If after reporting VISUAL this condition ceases to exist, the pilot must advise ATC that they are no longer visual.

What Nick has described above is the rules under which ATC can clear an aircraft for a visual approach, but an IFR pilot needs to know these rules as well as they are in AIP.

There are also other rules that state what an IFR pilot must do when cleared for a visual approach such as tracking and minimum altitude requirements.  These are a little later in section 2.11.3.

  15. Don't select TAAATS.prf and there should be no need to load a .ASR file.

If you have installed euroscope according to these instructions https://vatpac.org/controllers/clients/ you should see the following:

    image.thumb.png.65765db02a6b0af711a1d29e31f04714.png

The Class C, Metro+Class D, Pacific, Procedural, RAAF, YBBB and YMMM folders all contain a collection of profiles...thus:

    image.png.381058a4cd36fcba5dd124394a4a28ad.png

You will be presented with this window when you open ES 3.1d:

    image.png.6169d45bfa126438dd88065f23442ef5.png

Simply browse to the folder containing the location you wish to load and the chosen PRF will load all the necessary ASR and SCT files for you.
