  1. You are home on a stormy night and, to relax, you decided to control as SY_TWR for the Milk Run Monday event. Incidently, RWY 16L has been closed due to debris blown onto the runway from the strong winds so you have elected to use 16R for ARR and DEP. Due to storms, a virtual pilot has decided to fly as a Rescue helicopter from Bankstown along the coast and to give him his clearance, SY_APP has requested cancel of Auto Release for all Departures from Sydney.

A Virgin Australia B737-800, Callsign VOZ876 IFR to YMML via the DEENA4 departure, Wollongong transition off Runway 16R is taxiing and almost ready at the holding point. You are required to co-ordinate this with the APP Controller. What would you say??

    Quiz closes Thu 12 July

  2. Thanks to everyone that posted for this quiz.

The correct answer is Option 3 - "Track direct to the aerodrome till at 5nm then join base RWY 07"

Lots of people thought Option 4 was correct as well but that is the Tracking Requirements for VFR Aircraft by Night.

    Source: AIP ENR 1.1 - 25 para 12.8.4

    It states the following:

Tracking Requirements. Tracking requirements for a visual approach include the following:

    a. A pilot in command must maintain track/heading on the route progressively authorised by ATC until:

    (1) by day, within 5NM of the aerodrome; or

    (2) by night,

    - for an IFR flight, within the prescribed circling area; or

    - for a VFR flight, within 3NM of the aerodrome; and

    - the aerodrome is in sight

    b. From this position the circuit must be joined as directed by ATC for an approach to the nominated runway.

  3. Gents,

Membership wanted a booking system so they can see what controllers will be online in a certain time and VATPAC gave them this with a few rules.

You won't always get what you want and Sam highlighting the policy makes it pretty clear.

The booking system is to show ATC will be online, not the specific person. As long as the position is filled, it has solved its purpose. Unfortunately, not everyone on the ATC side maybe happy but instead of directly criticising VATPAC, take a step back and put yourself in the other persons shoes.

Lets not get into petty arguments, if we miss this time, theres always next.

How does that karma quote go again??

  4. Sean,

Theoretically speaking you can, only if you're logged on as BN-ISA position though. You can cover just as much as before but just logged on as a different position. (The disadvantage being pilots may not know about you extending if they are using Servinfo or the similar till you send them a contact me).

The above rules were primarily made for some ENR Controllers from taking way more than they can chew.

  5. You are flying a Super Constellation into Albury Airport (YMAY). You are very cold on a winter morning but VMC conditions with the lack of cloud has enough sunlight to keep you warm. You are currently 30nm to the West at 7500' on descent to Albury. ATC says "Echo Alpha Golf, Cleared Visual Approach, left base runway 07".

    What would you do?

  6. Hi Anthony,

Even if the Flight Plan symbol is not on your screen it'll be somewhere around the world. What i've noticed is that if you zoom out a lot (almost all the way out) you'll see a Flightplan symbol half way across the world sometimes. You can then do a manual correlation. I've never not-not had the flight plan symbol with the aircraft giving an SSR output.

  7. Try pressing W 3 times (or till it goes back to the 2D view). I remember i had this problem before.

If not, in the 2D view, move the panel up, then drag up the outside view from the bottom, then move the panel back to the original position.

EDIT: Stupid me can't read. Good work on getting your problem fixed.

  8. Jake,

I would recommend you re-consider your timings for such an event. A brief overlook of the Calendar would've noted that VATPAC's Panic Stations Cairns event is on at the same time (15th April leading up to 1030Z) and i doubt your coverage for ATC around YSSY.

Since you are affiliated with VATPAC, i would suggest you base your events around VATPAC's events when one exists, i.e. Set this flying so its NZAA - YBCS or something.

Our main goal is to increase traffic levels in VATPAC and an Event is one way to do this. Events are only successful with great participation and co-operation from our Pilots and our VA's.

  9. David,

VATPAC Staff decided to have one every 6 months from the last one and its actually been more than 6 months so i think we might start planning for one soon. Thanks for the reminder.

  10. Hi Richard,

Thanks for your interest. ATC Training has been somewhat slow over the past month with Instructors getting back into the loop and the slightly shorter number of Students at this stage.

That being said, i have forgotten a recent Promotion and i will put that up.

Normally, If none is put up, it just means that the student rate is slow or the Instructors might've forgotten (like me :teeth:)

  11. I was on FLOW for this event and had a really great time. It was really good to see everything work like clockwork with all the positions doing what they're supposed to do, and correctly. Great job to all the pilots for accurate flying under ATC.

Looking forward to the next one
