  1. Hi All,

In recognition of the fact that everyone seems to be buying the Q400 from Majestic, i know you are all eager to test it out on VATSIM.

Therefore, i'll be logging on as AY_TWR (Albury Tower) from about 7:30pm EST TONIGHT.

Feel free to even do Airwork inside AY Airspace for all i care but would be good to see you there testing out your Q400's. All type of aircraft are welcome.

If i'm bored with traffic, might log on a higher position but will still provide services down to the ground at Albury.

    Enjoy

    Arjun

p.s. Livery looks awesome John. Well done!!

  2. Thanks for the flight today Trevor. It was great fun.

Just a note to anyone else on here (especially people in Newcastle and Sydney), take a bit of time out and go have a look at the sim. It's fantastic and you won't regret the drive!!

  3. I thought we didn't do Sundays because of the VFR events that are on Fridays and Sunday nights. We trialled Milk Run Monday on a Monday once and got a crap load of traffic so decided to keep it (although occassionally, traffic levels are a disappointment).

It also makes sense to not have sundays because VATNZ run SNO's on Sundays and its only fair we support each other so we can focus traffic in select areas.

  4. ppfftt. Just when i put forward the idea for the next Town Meeting to the board you guys suggest it on here. Forum trolls are common, especially some select real world aviation people that want to "make themselves known". Expect more info to come up about Town Hall Meeting but just in regards to the others, just try and keep em happy and stick at it!

  5. Hi Luke,

It is a rule of VATSIM (Under the Code of Conduction, Section A9) that a person shouldn't have an unattended connection for more than 30 minutes. This rule normally seems to be enforced for Observers even more because they aren't really causing an operational 'goodness' per se to VATSIM. Observers should only go on when learning something to do with ATC or to see who is online so they can organise to go online to control. You did it to learn something to do with ATC so that is fine. However, your unattended connection would have been the reason behind you being disconnected.

Normally, being disconnected for the first time does no harm. Just be sure not to do it again as the bandwith on VATSIM is donated for its use and leaving an unattended connection isn't much use. You will also recall that the TWR Test requires atleast 20 hours of Observer time and this time needs to be useful time listening to ATC as to learn the ropes of VATSIM as opposed to leaving it connected and going away from the computer for half that time.

I strongly suggest you use VRC for Tower because of its ease of use and the amount of controller that use it for TWR in VATPAC. If someone tells you to get Euroscope because they're not familiar with it, tie the knot and leave them nicely :D.

There is no way of re-opening a Chat window, that i know off, after closing VRC. So i wouldn't worry about the disconnetion at this stage and just continue with learning Controlling. You can log onto our Teamspeak Server during afternoon times if you want someone to help you with VRC. Also be sure to look up the VRC documentation on their website. The quick reference guides are also really useful.

    Enjoy

  6. This was, in my view, the best CTD's i've been to. The Wave method was a lot better focusing ATC and Traffic making it fun for both sides of the PTT button.

I myself controlled ML-CAN for the YPAD leg and NZWN_TWR for NZWN. Although the ML-CAN session was good, the NZWN_TWR session was one of the best sessions i've had in a long time (pretty much in par with world flight :D).

Also took some time out to give the controller some traffic when i could as well.

It was an absolutely joyful event and i look forward to the next one.

Also, the feedback is amazing. I regard Germans as one of the best controllers on VATSIM and to see those comments certainly makes me extremely happy about VATOCE as a whole.

    Well done to all!!

  7. What an interesting topic

Rob, I understand there are lots of discrepencies in VATPAC, but its also a valid point to see the amount of competency displayed by a lot more of the controllers. Just log on and listen to ATC during a major event like Panic Stations. Then we can fairly compare ourselves to places like USA and Europe and for the amount of traffic we get on a regular basis, i actually think we do quite good. Sure theres a bad fruit here and there but its nothing that normally doesn't get filtered out over time. I agree that i do make a lot of mistakes when i control as well but i do take the effort to fix it up, and i'm sure a lot of other controllers on here are in the same boat. I would like to hope that is enough to encourage people to stay and control happily while online.

Zach, your philosophy of VATPAC is good. A sense of being positive is always appreciated everywhere. I can assure that the Training Team tries its best to keep the promotion process of people going and those who are willing go through the ranks rather quickly (and all to a very competent standard). Greg does an immense job in constantly reshaping the Training Team to what it has come to today and it's actually doing very good. Don't be too over-judgemental on your own controlling because if you passed your Practical Assessments, that would mean that you have the standard to log in VATPAC airspace and get things right. (I'm sure you did very well because the assessor you had is really good :D)

There seems to be a big aura that i've noticed in the past few years. People can get very judgemental on VATPAC because they don't know what is happening on the inside and they believe we're all ********************************* (<-- left to your imagination). Seeing stuff in action from behind the scenes, i can assure you that if the people that complain take the positive step towards solving an issue (i.e. contacting the person directly), the job always gets done in or there is a conclusion to a fair decision. I'm going to pull our IT Director into this as he's the perfect example. There have been many times in the past where i've requested something from him and the answers been prompt and to my liking. All the Directors are no different and they are here to make VATPAC a better place. Puglic Negativity doesn't resolve issues. Taking the right steps (feedback forms, contact directors directly, etc.) do.

  8. Well its really a question of what you think.

SUP's don't mind 'taking care' of people that don't respond to contact me's or have been sitting on the ground for a while.

When i'm controlling and i get an unresponsive person, i sometimes just let them be if there's no conflict and they are of less importance. But a SUP might still see this as wasting bandwith and resort to disconnecting them.

More for people sitting on the ground, they're not even enjoying Flight Sim, let along VATSIM so i don't see anything wrong with telling someone. They won't get in trouble, they'll just learn not to do it again. If a few people don't connect when they're not there, the amount of bandwith saved up would have to be significant.
