  1. Pilot: "Melbourne Centre, NXN, position"

    ATC: "NXN, Melbourne Centre"

Pilot: "NXN, KATAR at 21, flight level 350, BOBET 57"

    ATC: "NXN"

In the above example you were overhead position KATAR at time 0121 UTC, maintaining FL350 and estimating the next reporting position, BOBET, at time 0157 UTC. Note 4 digit time is not required in your voice report so long as no confusion exists about which hour you're referring to.. the corresponding minutes will do!

Nothing else is needed for a domestic position report. And if it's any consolation, quite a few real life pilots get it wrong as well :teeth:

    AIP GEN 3.4-106

...vectoring is possible with ADS-B' date=' as is the normal 5NM separation. IRL there are other considerations like the update rate (it should happen twice a second but I'm not sure if the ATC systems reduce this)...[/quote']

TAAATS updates the tracks at the same rate as radar even though the data is being received at a much higher rate. As an aside, the bigger restriction on vectoring or using 5NM separation between ADSB tracks is in fact our display range. In the application of surveillance separation the position symbols cannot overlap or touch on the display.. On my sector we display from Melbourne on the right hand side of screen to Perth on the left, and at such a range the ADSB symbols touch at around 20NM between aircraft. It must be frustrating for pilots some times I'm sure.

  2. Thanks guys

Yes, I earned my initial rating on Nullarbor sector last week. I started training in April last year, so it's been a while coming and a hard slog at times but it's been well worth it in the end. Odds are I would never have been interested in pursuing ATC as a career had it not been for VATPAC and VATSIM and it's great to see others also making the jump from virtual to real whether that be flying or controlling

And yes, I practically live at work now - certainly no shortage of overtime in this job if your keen!

  3. I thought you had moved on from sim aircraft and onto pushing real aircraft a few weeks ago :P

I tend not to vector those ones too often ;)

Unfortunately no video from me, but I'd certainly love to see one!

In any case, I look forward to dusting off the NGX when the next RealOps comes around (which is hopefully not to far in the future!).

  4. Specifically, MATS says to provide pilots with traffic avoidance advice (and/or a safety alert) when an identified aircraft that has traffic information continues to look like he is going to smash into said traffic. Avoidance advice may also be obtained on pilot request. Realistically as Will says its a duty of care thing and you'll get whenever we think bad things will happen.

Note the above MATS paragraph James posted is now out of date. Someone has decided that saying "traffic alert" makes less sense then saying "safety alert, traffic is..." and the proper phraseologies can now be found in AIP GEN 3.4-27.

....or maybe the word "suggestion" carries more weight when used by ATC.

If the suggestion is a 60 degree turn to avoid traffic I think most pilots will follow it regardless of whether it's a suggestion or not. David has stated quite well why we say it though - we'll try our best but we aren't responsible if the turn we give you points you at a mountain or into traffic we can't see...

  5. Hi Mark

The FMS website and MAESTRO within TAAATSMod are not complete and unfortunately still contain a number of bugs. In their current state they are not usable online.

I'm unable to continue development on them at the moment and the source code is not in a condition to be shared. I would like to get back into it one day, once work settles down. Until then, sorry but you'll have to make your own bigger and better version :)

    Regards

  6. That was great fun, thanks all.

It was a very professional sounding run in from Melbourne and only around 6 or 7 minutes of delay to boot!

Anyway Vatsim/flightsim-ism, my 737 lost some speed on approach due to a PC hang at the wrong moment, but still.. A320 up the clacker isn't a nice way to be forced into a go around with the clock sitting at time -1 minute. (Although I might have ended up the infamous 1 minute early anyway).

The minute or so long system hang was going to work out very conveniently for you Trent, much longer and you would have copped a 737 up the clacker as well

  7. Ignore the 00 and 55 for now. They are used in the RL for something' date=' i'm unsure of what that is. You are still able to operate successfully on VATSIM without using it.[/quote']

You can select runway 00 in the label as a reminder that you need to issue a STAR to that aircraft. In the real world it's inserted automatically.

Runway 55 (or 88 or something that couldn't actually be a runway) is the runway you select if the STAR is not specific to a particular runway eg. the WATLE arrival into Bankstown.

  8. vSTARS is a simulation of STARS, the system used in "TRACONs" across the USA. This is why it is only useful in a TMA environment. It only simulates that particular system, which is nothing like TAAATS (The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System). So it's not really meant to be a VRC or ES replacement.

Ross has done away with sectorfiles (about time) and opted for XML type files which contain the different types of data for a particular TRACON.

  9. Nice work Greg. I particularly like {greeting} (that should be in AIP).

Dave is right in that MATS says it should be used when vectoring onto final. Having said that though real life TCU's aren't the best places to look for examples of standard procedures - particularly when it comes to standard phraseology and HMI!

If you're going to get distracted, any memory prompt you can set for yourself is vital to staying on top of things and in control. One thing you learn the hard way in the academy is that its so damn hard to get back in control once you're behind the eight ball..

  10. As part of my training I recently jumpseated MEL-GTH-MEL with Rex and MEL-HBA-MEL with Virgin. In both cases there was a bit paperwork etc. prior to the day (which thankfully I didn't really have to partake in!) to get approval to fly and even then you still weren't guaranteed a seat on a flight. I was lucky and got to jumpseat on both the planned flights, however quite a few of my colleagues ended up on different flights and one missed out on a flight with Virgin altogether.

From my point of view Rex seemed a bit more laid back about the whole process compared to Virgin, which is something you might want to consider. I'd say your best bet is to write an email or letter to the airline to see if you can get permission beforehand rather than just trying on the flight.

It's definitely worth a shot though; banana muffin and ordinary coffee is very enjoyable at FL370!

  11. Hi Jason,

Pictures sure do help, so here's two.

In the above image, both of those tracks are generated by just 1 aircraft. Because the aircraft is not squawking its assigned code, TAAATSMod doesn't know who the radar return is so it displays a flight plan track. A flight plan track is really just a guesstimate of where the aircraft actually is, derived from flightplan information. All interaction with the aircraft is done through the flightplan track. If the aircraft was to start squawking the assigned code, the flight plan will correlate to the radar information and you'll get a nice label attached to the radar track like so:

    Hope that helps.

  12. I'm not a tower whacker, but heres how I would deal with it.

The reversal is part of the published approach if cleared from overhead LT, so as per AIP GEN 3.4 phraseologies all the ATC needs to say is "Cleared (chart title) Approach".

They might actually say something like this "Overhead LT, cleared ILS RWY32L approach, report turning inbound"

Alternatively you could get them to track via the approach without clearing them to conduct the approach. "Track via (chart title) Approach not below (level)". This would be useful if you wanted them to track outbound to NIE for the reversal but can't yet allow them to descend.

  13. Scorptec in Clayton sell pre-built computer systems and their prices aren't too bad.

Buying the parts and putting it together yourself is the best way to go and will work out cheaper. It's not real hard to do either and theres quite a bit of satisfaction when you turn it on for the first time (and it works!). I'm very happy with my new system.

  14. Last weekend I built a new PC because the motherboard on my old one finally died (seemed like a good excuse to upgrade :))

    ASUS P8Z68-V Motherboard

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4Ghz (yet to play with overclocking it)

    G.Skill Ripjaws-X 8G Kit(4Gx2) DDR3 2133

    Gigabyte 1280M GTX570

The entire system (the above plus case, HDD, PSU, Blu-Ray drive, W7 64bit) set me back $1400 and I didn't really bother shopping around so I probably could have gotten that cheaper.

It flys. FSX is stutter free no matter what I throw at it with the sliders all the way to the right and AA and AF cranked up. For example, Orbx YMML + PMDG JS41 + REX + a sky full of cumulus and I'm getting nice smooth frames in the high 20's low 30's and nice crisp textures.

So I'd definately recommend the GTX570, but it won't be any substitute for an entirely new system.
