  1. Hello everyone,

I seem to be making a habit of this  - getting into things then vanishing for 12-18 months.  In this case real life got in the way ... but in positive news I have just retired!  So now I need to get back to a full time hobby and surely I will have the time now to get back into this wonderful world!

It always seems intimidating getting up and running again.  One question I was hoping to ask from the outset is ... when I last left I was running Prepar3d v4.  MSFS had just been released I think.  So my fundamental question is ... should I just continue with Prepar3d or has MSFS taken over the world?  I just opened Orbx central and its running updates.

Hope all is going well in the VATPAC world!

  2. Just wanted to say thanks to the organisers and ATC for last night's newbie event.  I nearly chickened out but what got me there was observing for 30 minutes and realising that there were pilots out there less prepared than me and I wasn't going to completely screw up the event by participating.  It wasn't perfect but I got into the air and it felt great to finally be back online.

Fair amount of hilarity with a few aircraft taxiing through each other.  Mental note, if I am going to fly GA I need to be one of the first to leave not the last!

  3. I'm running over this again in prep for tonight's newbie flight but am getting zero return on IFR Flight Analyzer for YMHB-YPAD.  Is that indicating no current flights due COVID etc?  I ask because I plan on flying the PC-12 so was trying to research the appropriate SID/STAR for my aircraft.

Just thought I'd check I am not missing something that is causing flightaware to return zero data.

  4. Agreed Brett the Vatsim AFV Guide says:

5.3.5 UNICOM and Air to Air Communications The global UNICOM frequency continues to be 122.800 MHz. Voice communications are available and recommended. However, in order to reduce frequency congestion where there are multiple airports within close proximity, the maximum transmit/receive range on 122.800 MHz is artificially limited to a radius of 15 NM for each aircraft for a total effective range of approximately 30 NM (15 NM for aircraft A + 15 NM for aircraft B). 5.3.5.1 CTAF AFV does allow for the possibility of using discrete Common Traffic Advisory (CTAF) frequencies at each airport. However, in order to ease the transition and support pilots in easily locating appropriate frequencies, some additional background work is required and under way. Until this additional work is completed, please continue to use 122.800 MHz. 5.3.5.2 Other Air to Air Frequencies Because AFV provides voice transmission on all channels with real radio range characteristics it is very important that users only transmit on:  Active ATC frequencies, or:  Air-to-Air communications frequencies specifically designated for such use by VATSIM (e.g. 122.800) and only for the purposes for which those frequencies are designated. This is to avoid inadvertently causing interference to other stations, perhaps several hundred miles away, who may be legitimately using a frequency which otherwise appears ‘clear’.

I should have been clearer ... in another thread I asked about this and the response was clearly to use UNICOM.  I meant that for people like me who are trying to absorb it all the otherwise excellent  IFR in class Golf guide indicates the use of CTAF. It confused me initially and just wanted to help remove the confusion for any others who are reading everything they can :)

  5. Hi all

Am desperate for assistance as I am having a problem that is destroying my sim experience.

Having a massive issue with Logitech Rudder Pedals (P3Dv4 and flying RealAir Turbine Duke). I have configured (so many times) with FSUIPC but the left brake comes on intermittently (and increasingly so) - meaning I have differential brake symbol on often.  It's making any ground work - taxiing, take off and landing increasingly impossible.

I've rescanned on FSUIPC so many times but it is getting worse not better.

Any advice on anything else I can look at - it's becoming unmanageable and certainly preventing me flying on VATSIM as I can't stay on taxiways or runways.

    Hi Chris,

I've got updated AIRAC data for the GTN Trainer, pop me a message on the Discord and I'll get the files to you.

Thanks Paul - I tried the Discord link from the VATPAC page and it says I am not authorised?

Correct, however in the real world you have either undergone a large amount of training/instructing/learning, whereas on VATSIM you can't expect everyone to have the knowledge of the frequencies, yet alone what a CTAF is.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with CTAF, however 90% of the people flying at your airfield probably won't be on CTAF as there is no requirement to, or they probably aren't aware that such thing exists.

I kinda thought that was the whole point ... to try and be as realistic as possible. Frequencies are all on the charts surely it isn't that difficult?

I'm not arguing with you, just seems a bit ... off.
