Just wanted to say thankyou to Daniel Smith, Canberra Approach, for his great ATC tonight. Entertaining and very well done!

A big thank you to Daniel Smith for his high quality ATC service at ML - CTR (WOL & SNO) when i was flying last night, Great work Daniel Keep it up!

Well done Daniel on some consecutive positive feedback! Keep it up :)

  2. Hi everyone.

Another movement in the staff team that can be formally announced. Ryan McDonald has been appointed the Interim Director of Operations - he has some big shoes to fill thanks to the hard work of previous director, Harrison Scott.

Ryan will serve in this role for a period of up to 6 months until a suitable, permanent replacement can be appointed.

I look forward to seeing Ryan's contribution to the community in the coming months. Please congratulate him, when you next see him online.

  3. Hi everyone.

We aren't wasting any time here - let's get straight to business.😀

I am pleased to announce that Josh Micallef, a well known and active member of our community, has been appointed to the role of Director of Events. His application was outstanding and he showed a clear vision for the events department, regarding the next 6 months and beyond. The selection panel was very impressed by his presentation and the decision was unanimous.

I am excited to see what positive benefits his work will have on our community engagement and enjoyment.

Please congratulate Josh next time you see him online.

  4. Some more positive feedback for some of our VATPAC controllers, which is nice to see in the email inbox.

Yesterday while flying out of YPPH (Perth) I was handled by Mackenzie from Brisbane (1370299). He was very professional and was able to handle a heavy workload. He had great phraseology and was friendly and happy to help newbies to the network. Anyone else on frequency at that time would also agree. I am looking forward to flying in his airspace again.

Please pass on my thanks to James. A fun afternoon of tripping about from YMAY. Friendly and positive and helpful with everyone.  Good one James!

  5. Fascinating thread.

Are we discussing if the AIP Book isn't a legally binding document or whether NAPs are legally binding?

The AIP references Noise Abatement Legislation throughout (https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2019C00285)

    Further...

    Quote

    AIP ENR 1.5

9.1.4 Aircraft operating outside tower hours of operation (at locations which do not have continuous tower services) must comply with relevant noise abatement procedures only where they do not conflict with circuit direction requirements detailed in the ERSA entry for that location.

    Further..

    Quote

    AIP GEN 0.1

4.5 The  rules  of  the  air  and  ATC  procedures  are,  to  the  extent practicable,  incorporated  into  the  main  text  of  the  AIP  Book  inplain  language.  Where  the  subject  matter  of  AIP  is  related  to regulations  and  orders,  the  relevant  Civil  Aviation  Regulations (CARs),  Civil  Aviation  Orders  (CAOs),  Air  Services  Regulations (ASRs) and Air Navigation Regulations (ANRs) may be cited.

4.6 Throughout  the  AIP  the  term  “should”  implies  that  all  users  are encouraged to conform with the applicable procedure. The verbs “must” and “shall” are synonymous and mean that the applicable procedure is mandatory and supported by regulations or orders. The  word  “must”  is  preferred  over  “shall”  and  is  used  almost exclusively throughout the AIP Book.

    Hope that helps!

  6. In IT, as one problem is solved another is often created.

It's unfortunate, but we're all working VERY hard right now and appreciate everybody's patience.

The amount of traffic on the network is unprecedented right now. We're anticipating CTP type traffic this weekend and working hard to ensure the systems can stand up.

Unfortunately, broken controller information on the datafeed used by external clients isn't a priority at the moment. As William said, frequency hopping happens regularly in the real world - some days you get certain centers, other days you don't.

  7. Correct.

However, on VATSIM we'll have people messaging each other saying:

"hey you didn't make any UNICOM broadcast and cut me off on the runway"

"Uhh i'm on the CTAF frequency 120.5"

"Well i'm on 122.8 as per the CoC"

And as we know, sometimes VATSIM pilots can be less-than-courteous at times :P

A great solution as mentioned by others, 122.8 in COMM2 and ERSA CTAF in COMM1. The only downside is that you won't be able to hear the difference between "traffic melbourne..." on COMM1 and "traffic melbourne..." on COMM2 without having the window open at all times.

122.8 at all times is safest (for now...)

Correct. There will be no transceivers for CTAF at this point. We may in the future bring this in for airports with CTAF to give them additional range (in line with RW airports) however, we can't do this until CTAF is officially supported. For the meantime, tuning a frequency will suffice.

    @William Teale :)

The AFRU only transmits as a response to a radio call on the frequency (as per Richards link) and the transmission strength is usually limited to 30NM. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work and you'll often find yourself transmitting on 126.7 and getting greeted by 4 different nearby AFRU's xD

  9. The client was certainly a learning curve. A lot more keyboard shortcuts to remember, things in new places, new ways to move around the scope and interact with aircraft, etc.

It's actually quite a lot different from Euroscope + TAAATSmod, which just goes to show that TAAATSmod only scraped the surface of it's real-world counterpart. vatSys is much more of an in-depth simulation.

This learning curve is why documentation is an important element of this beta phase.

  10. Daniel,

At this stage, I would encourage you (and everyone else) to use 122.8 for all UNICOM/CTAF operations.

Because 122.8 is (at this stage) the only published/designated UNICOM frequency, you can't be sure every pilot would be on a specific Australian CTAF (from the ERSA) if you were tuned to that, especially international pilots.

    Hi Everyone.

I'm excited to say that @Jake Saw has asked me to gather some controllers to conduct beta testing for the new ATC client he has been working on for the last few years.

The client accurately simulates all aspects of TAAATS just like the controllers use in the real world and I have thoroughly enjoyed the learning curve when using it....

  12. Hello from VATSIM Tech.

We've just provisioned a brand-new Australia server. Within the next 24 hours, the existing "AUSTRALIA" server will go offline.

Please ensure your clients are up-to-date and using the latest server file to switch to the new server called "SYD-1".

This is part of the preparations for launching the new VATSIM voice infrastructure 1f603.png:D

  13. Landing lights are good when approaching a busy airport (CTAF or Towered) as it helps other pilots (and ATC) to see you, also good on an overcast day when there's no sun making it harder for others to see you.

There's no point in burning the globes if you don't have to (unless you're lucky enough to have those nice new LED lights.)

Further, most SOPs I've seen have Full Pump and Landing Light off at 500FT and both stay off until downwind on approach to land (if needed, as above).
