The Specialist Project is a group of Air traffic Controllers who provide ATC services to approved areas within the Region. Established in February 2020, their aim and focus goal are similar to the previous VATSIM Hit Squad which is to bring as many ATC services to areas that are not frequently established and controlled.

The Project has been established within the Pacific Region and the Specliast Project will visit the following countries within the Pacific Region of our Division.

    • Fiji
    • New Caledonia
    • Vanuatu

Controllers follow local procedures and provide services to the positions that are approved in accordance with their local controller rating. Oceanic airspace is not covered by the project.

The project commenced on 10FEB2021 and will last until the end of Q2 2021, pending demand and interested from local controllers and pilots.

Just wanted to give a quick shout out to James Larkin for his patience with me while I was having technical difficulties with my headset. Professional and excellent service was provided to all, which I really appreciate!

    Well done James!

  3. I'm pleased to announce that after much deliberation and consideration, the appointments committee has settled on a number of new appointments here at VATPAC for 2021 and beyond.

Greg Barber - Director ATC Training and Standards

Greg is a familiar face to the VATPAC board and will change from his role as a Non-Executive Director, back to his homeland of ATC Training. A position which has held for many years in the past. He is excited to establish the new ATC Standards Manager position as a strong piece of the ATC Training puzzle. Greg will be working closely with...

Will Smart - ATC Training and Assessment Manager

Will elected to discontinue his role as an (acting) Director and resumes his previous role of the administration of the ATC Training Department. It's great to have such a depth of experience in our training department. I'm excited to see what both of them come up with.

Steven Cullen - Director of Membership

Steven is also a familiar face to VATPAC and VATSIM, having previously been the "boss of VATSIM"! We are extremely lucky that he decided to put more of his time forward for VATPAC and it will be great to see where he takes this new membership role over the next 12 months. Steven will be working closely with the Membership Manager and DCRM (see below).

    Luke Maynard - Membership Manager

Luke has been a prominent part of the Events Team this year and has done some great work. It was great to see his detailed application for this role and he will embrace this new position.

    Callum Strawbridge - Discord Administrator

Once again, a name that needs no introduction. I am pleased to welcome Callum back to the senior staff team at VATPAC. I'm sure Callum will work closely with Steven and the membership team as the Discord forms an important part of the community.

    Ryan McDonald - Non-Executive Director

Ryan elected to nominate for the non-executive Director role after being an acting Director for the past 6 months. I'm glad that Ryan was able to make this commitment to VATPAC as he has a great vision and passion for the community and seeing things grow.

    Shannon Wells - Non-Executive Director

Once again, a name that is no stranger to VATPAC. Shannon has concluded in his role as the DCRM and will provide guidance and direction to the board as a non-executive director. His extensive history and knowledge of the inner workings of VATPAC will be invaluable.

    Clem Wu - Publications Manager

Clem will be (and has already been) working closely with Peter Story and Ryan McDonald (assisting AIS and Publications as a non-executive director) on the much-needed updating of our local instructions and pilot tutorials. Clem has extensive experience with document creation and management/control. It will be great to see him impart some of this knowledge at VATPAC.

We are still searching for these key roles. Are you interested? Apply to [email protected]

    - Director of Airspace and Publications; and

    - ATC Standards Manager.

In terms of the Division Director, after consulting with Anastasios, I will continue in this role as a permanent Director for the time being. I do anticipate a hand over to a suitable applicant in the next 6 to 12 months. This also concludes VATPAC's administrative period and I would like to extend a huge thanks to Ray Lang for his guidance and support with helping VATPAC in the last 6 months.

I would like to make a special mention of Peter Adamos, who after many years on the VATPAC Board will step down from his non-executive director role. Peter has been a great friend of mine and many others at VATPAC and I'm sure you will still see him around flying and controlling.

Thank everyone - an exciting 2021 coming up!

  4. EDIT 14th DECEMBER: Applications Extended. See Below.

    Hi everyone,

I am now ready to start the search for the next group of people to join the VATPAC Board of Directors, to help continue to run our great organisation and this will close off the "administrative" period that I have overseen at VATPAC.

The board is accepting nominations for the following positions, and any eligable general member is permitted to make an application. Positions descriptions and requirements are linked below, next to the positions we are searching for.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Permanent Voting Board Positions:

Director of Airspace and Publications (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YWl07S52dp10GYqSi6kgD6YxLH9_sqG2/view?usp=sharing)

    Secretary and Treasurer (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oBgWSsSJtu5EgwZKqpRZ_p_2Tt5kE2u6/view?usp=sharing)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, this is quite a list of positions to fill and will take some time, although we endeavour to have the new staffing structure in place by 01JAN2021. The new staffing structure has been attached as a PDF for those who are interested, this includes the positions currently filled by acting directors and also includes some existing volunteers who have had their role title change and reporting lines adjusted.

    Please note the following:

    • All applications should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line clearly indicating which position you are applying for and MUST include a description of why you believe you are the person for the job, how you meet the minimum criteria requirements and a little bit about yourself and your life outside of VATSIM.
    • You should only apply for 1 position. Applications for multiple positions are allowed but frowned upon.
    • Your application will be considered on your previous contributions to VATPAC, maturity and experience in management roles and a genuine interest to be involved with the running of the Division and NOT an interest in a 'staff title' and of course, how  you meet the minmum criteria and duties.
    • Applications will close on the 28th of December.
    • Where possible, we will try to follow the requirements of the constitution however it may be necessary to waive some requirements to facilitate this process. Any requirements waived will be clearely communicated to the general membership.
    • Depending on the suitability of the applicant for a position, essential criteria requirements may also be waived and communicated to the general membership.

I urge anyone and everyone, that has ever had the slightest urge in getting involved to throw your hat in. We are NOT asking for 50 hours of your time per week, but we are asking for your maturity, leadership and genuine desire to do something great for the community - if that means 2 hours of your time per week, then we'll take it!

I look forward to seeing your applications in my inbox soon.

    Thank you!

  5. Thanks Greg. You stole the words from my mouth.

Everyone did an awesome job, once again and the feedback from a few mates of mine in the Worldflight Sims was that once again, VATPAC was THE outstanding airspace to fly through. We've really improved our service over the last few years. It's a result of enourmous amounts of hard work from many people.

Kudos to you all. Keep it up (but don't burn out...please!!!)

    🙃👏

  6. Hi everyone,

Once again, I am bumping this post. I would encourage everyone to re-read this, and familiarise yourselves with the updated expectations in the second post (which I have adjusted for clarity).

I understand that some of our staff are still young and maturing (I was one of you many years ago). The rule of "would you like your mum to read what you just said?" still works wonders and/or "would the CEO of the company have a problem if I posted this?". Remember that nearly always, someone will take offence. Try your best to absolve yourself of any guilt or fault, whenever you can. I can also understand that some of our older staff still need to be reminded of this.

It's easy to get caught up in the moment - don't worry I know this and I still occasionally do it - but we just have to make every effort we can to stop ourselves when we need to. I also know that sometimes it's easy to forget that whilst we fly virtual planes, this organisation is very real. It's real people, it's a real indsutry (aviation) and we need to remember to treat our position with the respect it deserves. In the near future, we are still looking at establishing VATPAC as a proper Non For Profit organisation, registered in Australia. No different to your local bowling club, model aircraft club, or something larger like your volunteer fire service. The VATPAC brand and identity needs to be protected and upheld by everyone.

This post is not directed at anyone specifically and as I said, it would be good if everyone reads this so that they understand their expectations.

Thanks for your hard work. Keep it up!

Cristian Torz displayed a fantastic and flexible ATC service and was extremely polite and kind. We exchanged some very kind words and he really stood out because of his extreme professionalism and politeness. Would definitely fly under his control again. Thanks Cristian!

    Well done Cristian!

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Nick Gilbert looking after Brisbane Centre... I'm new to VATSIM and Nick was amazing, taking the time to help me with correct procedures and sending me website links to help me along the way. Really great service and much appreciated.

    Well done Nick!

just wanted to applaud Chris currently controlling on Brisbane Centre (TBP). The patience, professionalism and positive character on the frequency is second to none. Great job Christopher!

    Well done Chris!

  10. Hi everyone,

A significant change has been made in the structure of VATSIM, effective from today. VATPAC is no longer a member of VATSIM Oceania (VATOCE). We now fall under the jurisdiction of the Vice President of Asia Pacific, who of course, is looking after the Asia Pacific regions of VATSIM.

Whilst I have not yet had the chance to formally discuss with Anastatisia, I would like to warmely welcome him to the role and look forward to working with him in the future.

I'd also like to make a special mention to Jackson Harding, who has been involved in both senior VATPAC and VATSIM leadership since I can remember. He has dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to this hobby and although him and I have had our difference in the past, we worked extremely well together on the Board of Governors and also whilst I've been here at VATPAC. Please, next time you see Jackson around, send him a note to say thanks. He deserves it.

I'd also like to express thanks to Allan Cooke, who provided excellent senior leadership for the Oceania division over the past few years. It's unfortunate that Allan suffered a medical episode recently, which has meant he was unable to continue in his role. I know @Callum Strawbridge would echo my comments 100% and very much appreciated Allan's contribution to VATPAC. My best wishes go to Allan and I hope that he remains happy and healthy for many years to come.

  11. I am regreftully advising that I received a resignation from Ben O'Leary a few weeks ago.

Ben was instrumental in the past few months, working closely with Callum on making significant improvements to VATPAC's social media precence and engagement. I want to personally thank Ben for his efforts and it was a shame we only had a short time together. The Scope (which you will have all received this evening), is another one of Ben's achievements that is reaching the community.

Blair Shaddock is covering the responsibilities of the Community Engagment Department for the time being and has hit the ground running. Expect to see plenty more from him in the coming weeks.

    Thanks again Ben!

  12. +1 to everyone elses comments.

I always loved having a good chinwag with Quigs on Teamspeak. Great conversations about snow/skiing and other various things.

His passion, patience and positive energy amongst the community will be missed.

    Fly high Quigs..

  13. Hi Everyone,

It's with sadness that I have to announce Cam Tyson has resigned from the VATPAC Board. Thankfully, he's not going far, as Cam has accepted the role of Training Syllabus Director at VATNZ!

I want to thank Cam for his exceptional contribution to VATPAC over the last few years and I'm sure that Callum would echo my thoughts. Cam has made huge strides in the VATPAC Training Department and I know his legacy will be continued by a keen, new Director in the near future (ready your resume's if you are interested in these roles).

Will Smart, current Deputy Director of ATC Training, will fill the Cam's responsibility when he departs on Friday.

Once again, thank you for your oustanding work Cam, you will be missed!
