  1. Well the flight was.... uhmmmmm interesting to say the least, for those that participated and braved the flight anyway.

I wonder if everyone has recovered from the ordeal yet and ready for some Saki next.

One thing it did show was how little we rely on the guages and simply navigate with the use of the GPS and a predifined flightplan.

The concentration on the guages and constant changing frequencies kept everyone busy. The added distraction of what the gauges also indicate re radials and how when tracking you can easily go round and round in circles if you do not watch them carefully was quite informative to the point I missed a waypoint although I think most managed to miss a waypoint at some stage but in the end all managed to roughly navigate the course even if the flighttracks showed some wayward deviations and looked like the pilots were probablydrunk. Even Daryl managed to go astray. LOL

It took a bit of sorting out where you were and getting back on track when visibility was just about zero. IFR what does that mean again Daryl ..................................??????????????????

Certainly tested most it seems as there was a lot of muttering and cursing but as always great company and a lot of fun......

Well maybe that is exaggerating it a bit .............

Now back to the drawing board to create something just a little bit less demanding.........until next time

  2. Just an update and some further information for those intending in join the flight Wednesday night who might want other information like distance to calculate fuel load etc. The total distance of the route is 150nm

As the departure airport is to say the least rather substantial suggest using Gates D1-D9 Small. Taxi to runway via A-F-B-Y. Unless we strike ATC and are directed otherwise. In the default Baron 58 (non Turbo) the total time from the Gate to parking at Destination including approaches and ILS T&G should work out to be about 66 mins. See you on the night...................

  3. As the participants of the flight started to rally at ASHBURTON our departure airport there was a loud ....CRASH...BANG...

Someone yelled out... better call the ambos. Talk about response time.

A closer investigation revealed the following so now we know why we never see Daryl flying of late as he must have transferred to kiwiland

Come back Daryl......Australia needs you mate .............LOL

some found the bushstrips almost impossible to find.

There was the usual variation amongst us with weather even when all using Realworld weather, no idea why or how to resolve it so we all have the same situation under real weather but from the East coast mainly was clear yet as can be seen heading into the passes at the beginning of the Southern Alps the weather certainly started to build up just to add a bit of a challenge to my otherwise boring mundane flight.

At least flying at 100' agl I was able to remain Visual................

As always fun was had by all that came along, I am sure I heard Dan mutter of being sick or was it a puppy, and then we had some late arrivals at the destination so some decided to fly back along the route to see if the landing area at the lodge was there seeing as most could not find it. To say flying the course in reverse was an interesting exercise back through the pass at 4500' is an understatement as it visually did not look possible until you were right at the ridge where you then could see it.

  4. As for realism here are a couple of shots so as to show what REX Essentials and FS Global 2010 can do with Terrain and weather effects

I thought at one stage I was heading into a snowstorm by the look of the clouds ahead

Even the snow glistened in the light while flying along

and to cap it off at the destination Aix-Les-Bairns (however you want to say that) found I had snow drifts across the runway on final approach sheesh...........

  5. Great flight Dan....you are one sic puppy mate

One can see why you do a dummy run and land at Megeve [LFHM] first

before attempting to land at Courchevel [LFLJ]. They must have known we were coming as they broke out the crash fire tender to be at the ready for those uhm not so good landings ..............

At least the accomodation looked pretty flash while aircraft were repaired at the substantial hangar there.

Although when it was time to take off again hang on a sec who took the runway

Oh thats right it goes way down there

one almost felt like 'Eddie the Eagle' launching down the giant Ski-jump ready to lauch into the abyss. hang on someone did didn't they ????

  6. Gee what is going on with VFR OPERATIONS, friday night saw at least 14 pilots embark on an interesting flight into the wilderness of Tasmania where there was much cursing about what scenery shows the airport ? where is the runway ? or who put a bend like that in it ? Of course referring to Cradle Mountain. some illustrious leader said Follow me I know where it is and subsequently went AWOL or was it into a Mountain Pete ?

Lo and behold tonight, again a group of some 12 pilots with similar comments as those who didnt have the scenery and now did so could see what was being said on Friday night with similar remarks. One wonders if in fact there are 2 runways connected end to end with a 15 degree variation between them. Anyway a great flight and good fun company enjoyed by all good to see the numbers building up. Keeps everyone on their toes a bit more.

  7. Don as part of the impromptu VFR Ops group that joined in in DC3 I couldn't agree more. It was indeed a great event and to be part of it was a lot of fun. Daryl's workrate was impressive as how it all went like clockwork "break break" instructions "break, Break" seemed to be said a fair bit there at one stage but noticed that he did infact juggle us all around in an orderly fashion. Daryl job well done indeed. Although your abscence was duly noted later at the VFR Operation flight in Tassie but guess you earnt your nanny nap after that effort mate........... LOL

  8. Members,

Recently the VATPAC events team have been going through the daily focus events and trying to change some to make the range of flying for the VATPAC/VATSIM community as broad as possible.

We are still currently looking for ideas for Sundays and every 2nd Thursday. I have recieved some Major Event ideas through the Suggest an Event page but nothing that we can run on a weekly basis.

So here is your chance to have a say in what event you would like to be seen run weekly on the above days. Right now we have an daily focus event in the planning stages for the west coast of Australia so keep that in mind when sending through your ideas.

Click here to send through your idea. If it for a general event idea with no specific airport (e.g. Event based in Northern Territory/Outback etc.) leave the flightplan, altitude, distance etc. field empty(Information which would not be valid for your specific event). Once you idea is sent through and is chosen to be used the events team will get to work and start planning the idea/event and get it on the VATPAC calendar ready for pilots and controllers to attend.

    Look forward to your ideas!

    Hi James

Just a query as a regular member that flys 'VFR Operations' on both Friday and Sunday nights. I note that 'VFR Operations' is only accessible and listed under 'Daily Focus' yet no longer shown under the thread 'Other Affiliated VATPAC Events'. It used to be there and was accessible with replies also being able to be made. I also note that all the other 'Daily Focus' events are listed there and accessible to reply to their respective events. The other Daily Focus Events have the even details listed there yet not 'VFR Operations' which regularly we have issues with in attachment links not working more often than not.

    Regards Ross

  9. That was indeed the case

    And there was Definitely - No T & G

Thank god as I discovered looking at Plan G after at the route I had taken

I was nowhere near where I thought I was.

It was a very challenging flight indeed trying to work out what was what on the dash panel and credit to Knut 'author' of the flight with his assistance to getting us back on track and to the destination.

Damn it was hard work but in the end was a great exercise trying to fly fully on manual without using the aid of AUTOPILOT or GPS.

  10. At Leighs request here is a thread to put your screenshots

Here is one to show the Grampian Ranges in the background and Grampians YGMP strip which had a variety of aircraft, and some rather shady looking people in unmarked helicopters trying to wave us down ...... Strange things apparently happen down that way so I am told .................

Great flight Leigh very good scenery highlighting the various mountains along the ranges too.

ps darryl notice no smoke on the skyboy........

  11. Gday Chris,

Just to clarify we were not a VFR 'Newbie Group' at all but part of a regular weekly 'VFR Operations' that fly Fri/Sun nights and had flown the flight also on Friday night. Yes on occasion we get to marry up our flights when there is a 'Panic Stations' event at a major airport so it is always interesting and good experience. I do understand that arrivals would take precedence and this was not being questioned as this would be indicated by our patience to wait after being instructed to Standby.

My only comment and certainly not as criticism is that we would have been well and truly departed before the horde arrived as we had all requested and obtained Clearance by 0910z however when trying to get taxi clearance when there weren't many aircraft at the airport at all. This however compounded each time a new callsign called requesting clearance. Maybe I have it all wrong but if you have all that information and ready to go why are we pushed back behind new contacts starting and dont even have ATIS details or assigned squawk codes. As several times this occurred We simply sat there and saw new clearance requests or even simply taxi requests who didnt have even the basic ATIS information or assigned squawk codes jump straight over the top of us while we waited patiently on standby.

We are all there to share the Flightsim community. As to my comment it was re a 747 who after arriving on 34R decided to stop smack bang in the middle of a taxiway intersection which appeared to create a gridlock and caused a snowball effect with several other heavies behind banking up on the taxiway which I can imagine caused more drama than anything for the Ground ATC let alone when they pulled out onto 34L to taxi up to another exit taxiway to the terminals unannounced on either Ground or Tower. Doing it right in front of another heavy just about to touchdown on 34L which subsequently had to abort the landing and go around. From the look of it his back wheels were already on the ground.

I Reckon that pilots pucker factor was doing some rapid palpitations indeed when that happened LOL.

Anyway all credit to the troops who filled the roles of ATC......... Well Done

  12. Just a view from some of the VFR group who were trying to go out against the incoming tide or should that be Tsunami.....

Credit though to all the ATC personell in trying to keep on top of it all and maintain some semblance of structure and flow of the continual inbound stream.

Albeit someone in a 747 who arrived on 34R really created havoc after landing and stopped smack bang in the middle of taxiway Bravo whilst on Lima and with at least 6-8 aircraft trailing close behind subsequently caused gridlock there.

  13. VH-RJF (Cessna 177RG)

yet another good one by Peter I was wondering where you were sending me Craig when you said to advise overhead Macksville as was almost past the point of no return to Armidale LOL and Tony's Place as opposed to Tony's Tiny Strip in the next valley had a few looking too but all worked out well in the end. Definitely easier to come in from the south rather than the north as you certainly need to drop to clear the mountains and get down low enough to land wood ducks and signets on the dam and others flying across in front of you as you are about to land all good stuff. Was waiting to see the motorbike try to go alongside as you tried to take off but that didn't happen. Maybe thats why the 2 guys were waving arms at the end of the strip must have been a harley (even looked around for the compulsory recovery vehicle and trailer LOL)

  14. Screenshot showing the approach into Melbourne ILS-16 in an 'Avatar livery' 737-800, quite stunning paintwork

Thanks Dave and to the VATPAC members who made themselves available for the ATC components of the flight.

    Greatly appreciated.

Now I just need to go back and re-read the Tutorial and the ...... uhmmm part in Bold type as apparently I somehow missed reading that bit ......Sorry Dave LOL

  15. cleared it of what ???

They do have ground maintenance staff at Coffs to keep the grass mowed you know ....... LOL

Craig hope the flour bomb didnt cause too much damage when it was dropped on the house .......

now looking at what protection Bruxner Park and surrounding Korora hillside provides in appropriate defensive cover from future aerial attacks........

Seriously though thanks Craig for your support tonight filling in as ATC for Gold Coast and Coffs. Appreciated

    Ross

  16. Great news Craig, certainly looking forward to it, just goes to show what can happen I guess in real time with so many inbound traffic I didn't expect the curved ball getting redirected out west over sherwood forest and Mt Coramba, lucky I know the area albeit trying to work out and identify them even knowing the area was a challenge but was all good and well done the ATC also doing a great job getting us all in very tidely. Lesson learnt, expect the unexpected when least expected LOL
