  1. Do you have an example of a unit with the 100.000 frequency?  Sounds like they're an observer (likely to have the callsign xx_OBS, where xx is the person's initials), not a real ATC unit.

Enroute controllers can extend to their surrounding sectors but most network maps and clients will only show them as controlling the sector they are logged in to.  You can check a controllers info (generally select the sector and read the extra info entered by the controller), where they will nominate any sectors they are extending their service to.

    E.g:

    EXTENDING ELW 123.75, ARL 130.9

Hello I would like to know a general waiting time for exams is it within the day week or whats the go

Generally you can expect an exam to be assigned to you within 2-3 days from requesting it, although it is often much shorter.  Our training team are all volunteers with real-life commitments, and these admin processes take time, so we ask that students are patient and understanding of that.

Thanks Matt. I am using two tablets running Virtual Avionics CDU v1.10. Is there a better one than that?

I'm the wrong person to ask on this, sorry Chris.  Someone in the discord might be able to suggest something, but I would be surprised if there was something better than what you're running now.

I fly the 738NG and I cannot see where you can input a Required Time of Arrival in to the FMC, which seems surprising and therefore a little archaic.

The real world 737 FMC has the RTA function, which takes care of this for you.  Unfortunately there aren't many (any) addons which simulate this.

I suppose you could argue circuits could constitute the activation of AIP ENR 1.10-3 2.7:

Abbreviated details for operations in controlled airspace may be advised by radio if the flight is to operate locally, or operations will be for a brief duration.

Yep, as long as flight notification is given by some means, that would be sufficient.  That would also apply for limited VFR operations in class D (training area flights, circuits, short-term operations in a specific area), and similar circumstances in class C, although it is generally agreed that submitting a flight plan prior will increase the likelihood of receiving a clearance as it reduces controller workload.

Somewhat related, does anyone have the vatSys vStrips plugin working? I'm aware John Golin was working on matching the INTAS system. I haven't had any luck getting it to connect with vatSys running despite following the detailed instructions

I believe this plugin needs a recompile, but I don't have the latest info on its development.

  9. Hi Haydn,

There are a few ways to handle what you've described.  As you pointed out, flight plans are not required for aircraft in these situations, and IRL are unlikely to be submitted.  Online, the majority of pilots submit flight plans, so that has become the norm.

Firstly, if you are controlling a tower position and using tower view, there may be no need for any sort of digital record (i.e. flight plan/strip).  You can note the callsign like you did, and use visual identification to monitor the aircraft within the circuit.

If you are using vatSys without tower view, you have extra options additional to asking the pilot to submit a flight plan:

    1) Issue a clearance to operate in the circuit area and assign the squawk code 0100.  The aircraft will appear on your radar display with a unique symbol which will aid in identification.  In the screenshot below, LOI is squawking 0100 at 3,000ft.

    image.png.3612bc70356ee2508c994321badd25d8.png

    2) Create a flight plan within vatSys.  Open the Flight Plan window (Windows > Flight Plan)
    image.png.0afa2d4134b0ea75910141f178b805ad.png

Type the aircraft's callsign in the Callsign box and hit Enter.  You should receive a warning indicating that no FDR exists for that aircraft (which is expected).  Now hit the Create button, and you'll be able to create and submit a flight plan for that aircraft.  Upon completion, a strip will be created which you can interact with.

Is there such thing as having a cord AND bluetooth? Cord for the aircraft and bt for phone?

Yes, no matter what, the headset will plug into the aircraft using a cable.  If the headset has bluetooth, the headset control unit will also be able to interface with your phone.  Most headsets will have an aux cord to plug into your phone too, so the choice is yours.

You're probably better off waiting until you start flying though before buying a headset, your school will have ones for you to borrow, and you can get a feel for which ones you like and don't like.  If you're on a budget and not too concerned with ANC, DCs are good, but you'd be better off using your school's non-ANC headsets until you're ready to buy something a bit more suited to the type of flying you'll be doing.

Lesson here. Seek clarification if unsure or an alternative rwy is operationally required.

Absolutely, pilots should never be afraid to request non-standard clearances where an operational requirement exists.  If normal voice clearances are being issued, include the request when you request clearance (rather than after delivery has read an entire clearance to you), with something as simple as:

Sydney Delivery, QFA1 Heavy, for London, request clearance, and request runway 34L due operational requirement

If you've already received a PDC, you could call up Delivery as @Russell Diehl did and request the runway.   The controller may reissue the clearance over voice, or no change may be required, depending on the aerodrome.

Sydney Delivery, QFA1 Heavy, request runway 34L for departure due operational requirement

If the pilot doesn't explicitely request something, ATC will (generally) assume that they are able to conform with the current runway config and process them accordingly.

A bit of info for this flight in case anyone was interested especially in replicating the real world flight.

VH-OEJ is the final QF 747 left in Australia. It is flying Sydney to LAX on 30 June, departing YSSY at 0930.

VH-OEJ was the second Wunala Dreaming 747, from 2003 to 2012. It was also the last 747 to be delivered to Qantas in 2003.

It also had the Socceroos 2014 livery and the 2016 Olympic Games livery.

The final flight has now been pushed back to 22 July at 0930 at this stage.

  13. Another option is to do what is done in the cockpit of (hopefully) every IFR aircraft (from GA to RPT), and confidence check the procedure you've loaded against the chart.  Even if you're on an old AIRAC, as mentioned, the changes are likely to be administrative or something irrelevant to your navigation system like a climb gradient or something, so provided your nav system is tracking via the same points as indicated on the latest chart and you comply with the height and speed requirements, you can use the old data.

If you find a significant change, you can attempt to manually edit the procedure via the FPL page and insert/delete fixes, and if you don't have the necessary fixes in the database, just advise ATC that you require the radar SID or radar vectors in leiu of a STAR.  This should be done on first contact with delivery, or as soon as possible to the enroute controller, so they can plan and coordinate your arrival if required.

  14. Unfortunately, most pilots don't carry charts for the procedures they'll be flying, let alone have an understanding of the efficiency procedures.  Common issue at any controlled airport online, such as protecting the rapid exit on 16R at Sydney by holding 16L arrivals short of B8, only to have the 16R arrival roll through to vacate B10 or pull up and vacate on the crossing runway.  We are all aware that we aren't dealing with professional pilots, so I don't think anyone expects them to be aware of these things, but as a controller, there's nothing wrong with some polite guidance if people are interested in learning more.

  15. Hey guys,

Looks like ATC Assist is still displaying some old procedures which have since been removed.  The most obvious I saw were the CLIFF4 and ANKUB1 departures from YSSY, which show up if you select the CORDO waypoint at the bottom of the page.

Is there any chance someone could update that data?

  16. I've had this issue when I connect to AFV too quickly after connecting to vatsim through ES.  As long ES has loaded the position enough to draw your airspace and put your frequency in the menu bar, you should be good to disconnect and reconnect AFV, and it should load normally.  On a related note, I've found that if you try to connect AFV before ES has put your frequency in the menu bar, it'll connect as 199.998.
