  1. Hi Luke,

Just wanted to clarify something. One of your posts said...

    >Example2. - Another Radar Departure, but the aircraft is still some time away from takeoff. (Use this procedure when the aircraft are in excess of 2 minutes away from takeoff.)

TWR - APP "Next off Runway 09 in 4 minutes, VOZ841."

APP - TWR "VOZ841 Maintain Runway Track."

TWR - APP "VOZ841 Maintain Runway Track."

Just for information you can't, not that I am aware anyway, maintain a runway track unless you have a GPS and have the runway setup for tracking? It's always been maintain rwy heading becuase tou can just hold a heading airborne, but you cant hold a track unless there is an aid sitting in the middle of the rwy!

Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Regards

    Daryl

  2. Oh and.... Having been involved in aviation since 1979 I was stoked to see my first Air Traffic Controllers Licence, I didn't even know you got them like us pilots:eek:

Thanks for the pic and educating me!:D

  3. Mark,

As an ex ATR-72 Captain (who trained in the U.S on type), I can happily inform you that the Icing (freezing rain) which caused the crash of American Eagle Flight 4184 at Roselawn, Indiana has seen thousands of hours of testing in which the Extended Boots to correct the issue proved useful. The original boots did not protrude sufficiently aft of the leading edge and allowed freezing water droplets to accumulate on the upper surface of the wing, thereby reducu=ing the lift capabilities of the wing and increasing the stall speed of the wing. The American Eagle flight was in a holding pattern and therfore the Ice accumulated on each wing differently due to each wing having a different angle of attack in a continuing Left hand turn associated with a holding pattern. This led to one wing stalling before the other. There is a brilliant book about the accident, you shuld be able to find it on line if your keen.

I flew the -212 which had the original icing problems and saw the planes I flew get grounded while their boots were extended after the crash. The -500 and now -600 come out with extended boots as standard.

I hadn't heard that ALL ATR's have left the states?? Dunno. But I found if you knew how to treat them in icing conditions they were a very safe and reliable aircraft.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

  4. Tried an OCTA IFR flight tonight, Andrew Harle performed flawlessly, as usual, and allowed me to have a really exciting IFR flight from Wagga Wagga to Mount Hotham via Tumut and Corryong. Thanks Andrew!

To the other ATC I encountered tonight well, bloody great job guys, professional all the way.

    See ya next flight.

  5. Chris,

The answer is simple. The Pilot Rating provides individuals who wish to improve their aeronatical & piloting knowledge through a VATSIM approved training forum. There are no accolades involved. Reward is the pilots improvement in theoretical knowledge and airmanship. Pilot rankings under the approved system are available as evidence to the Virtual on-line community of an aviators skills and knowledge. There is no mandatory requirement to complete the pilot rating, although those that do are showing a humble presence of the simple fact that you can never know it all.

Good luck with your decision Chris and, if you choose to attend, we welcome you with open arms.

  6. Had a bloody great time as usual guys!

I had was in a B767 and received the following...

    Departure OCTA

    1 x Orbit

    1 x Holding pattern

2 x Change of cruise levels

    1 x Speed limitation

    1 x STAR

    1 x ILS

    1 x Go around

1 x Missed Approach Procedure (I did this because I wasn't given any instructions what to do, just "go around"! LOL)

    1 x ILS

And a great ground controller who had do deal with several of us who turned off the runway opposite to our parking bays so he had to get us back accross.

I am, as always, incredibly impressed with the knowledge and skills of both ATC and pilots participating in the Panic Stations events and my congratulations go out to all participants for their dedicated efforts to make these events as close to real life as possible. Well done everyone, you make me feel like I'm back in the skies again:clap:.

Here's a few of us from BN in the holding pattern...

    Cheers guys!

  7. Just for those that are wondering, that's a pic of Lady Elliot Island. I used to fly an Islander and a Twin Otter into there daily.

The island is located 25 mins flying time East of bundaberg airport. It usually only gets Islanders Caravans and Otters as it is a

small strip and quite rough being a coral atol.

Very cool strip to land on if you ever get the chance...

  8. RL imitates Virtual...

After I recieved my ATR-72 endorsement in the U.S I returned home for R & R. Even though I was only flying the aircraft overseas I decided to get the type rating put on my

Australian ATPL Licence. I rang up the Archerfield office of the CAA (back then) and they told me , "sure, come in and we'll put it on for you".

So I drove an hour to Archerfield and showed the CAA guy my certificate of endorsement, ATR-72-212. "What's an ATR-72, he said"? I told him what one was. His reply was,

"sorry mate, if it isn't flying in Australia then we don't recognise it as an aircraft and therefore we can't put it on your licence".

So, I had to wait till the first ATR entered service in Australia so I could get it on my Aussie licence and prove that I could fly the thing! I already had many thousands of hours

on type before Australia's governing aviation body finally recognised that the ATR existed (almost 20 years after the first ATR-72 flight). LOL

That's the type of bureaucracy RL pilots have to put up with everyday in Australian skies.

    Fly safe,

    Daryl

  9. Thanks an WELL DONE Kurt!

Remember everyone, despite all the rules/regulations/SOP's blah, blah, we (pilots) are all still human and will ALWAYS do what we can to help a young person interested in following in our footsteps. (And I was always happy to help if you were female and 18 too! Although those days are long gone now!).

ALWAYS ask, they can only say no!

    Daryl
