  1. And I've had the privilege of watching you go from a new member of our community, to a pillar of it.  Well done and thanks for your efforts mate. See you in the skies.

  2. Yeah, Richard said it. There is so much redundancy in Oz that its not even something you train for. It would be crazy having 15 aircraft in a TMA, all in IMC! It would be an aviation disaster.

You are taught in training heavily on what to do if you lose comms... Use comm 2 (redundancy in your aircraft), Sqwauk 7600, Continue on last assigned track/Level and add "Transmitting Blind" to your phraseology while you continue to use the radio transmitting intentions.

"Cooly Tower, ABC transmitting blind, climbing 4000 tracking direct Muwillumbah"

If your under Radar Control its easy because as soon as you 7600 they keep all traffic clear of you. Its in IMC OCTA that things can get interesting.

    Happy flying

  3. Great post Eoin!

Can i add my little bit?

you're overhead the waypoint "PLUGA", you....

Just a reminder to all ATC, you cannot be "overhead" a position in space. PLUGA is a positional point in space and therefore ATC will use the terms, passing, crossing or At.  But NOT overhead.

"Overhead" is used when a position is located on the ground. Report Overhesd the VOR. Report Overhead the NDB. Report overhead the field.

Again, great post Eoin, i learnt heaps thanks.

  4. Kirk, in Vatpac we encourage ATC adventure. Please dont tell young ATC persons that CTP is not a good idea. If its so bad why did you do it 6 times mate!?

I recconend progression to all upcoming ATC persons to attempt the CTP. its Vatsim biggest yearly event and one that all Vatpac ATC should consider as an achievement,  like World Flight.

  5. I would like the recognition of Callum Strawbridge to be noted by the VATPAC community. Tonight's Iron Mic to Coolangatta brought out the best in our ATC team. I was so impressed by the ATC professionalism and phraseology, the knowledge base and ability to lead and hand over traffic while maintaining co-ordination between controllers. In my eyes, everyone stepped it up tonight!

As regards to Callum. This controllers abilities reached a level which demands notice by our community.  As an avid VATPAC enthusiast, a dedicated member of the VATPAC team and a Controller with abilities to make a regular "Milk Run" become a thing of joy, Callum has once again raised the bar for both enjoyment and knowledge in the aviation community.

I personally commend you Callum for your great spirits and passion of our wonderful hobby.

    Kindest regards

  6. Just a heads up,...Remember, you don't need an FMC to do a DME ARC. All you need is a (co-located) Lateral guidance device (VOR,NDB) and a DME.

I have done many arcs onto final approach, or elsewhere, having never used an FMC to do it.  I'm not going to try to teach it in text form here but, if you do the VATOCE Pilot training course you will have RL pilots who will teach you this if you want to attain this level.

  7. Firstly, Thanks to one and all. The recognition is greatly appreciated. Thanks also go to the controllers who jumped on and helped when it really took off (Sy Twr Forgot name sry,  & Bn Ctr Quigs, especially).

Secondly, I must say that the level of skill demonstrated by the majority of pilots flying last night made my job a lot easier.  Making turns nice and quick after given a new Heading, slowing the aircraft early so that the TMA wasn't a racetrack, and everyone utilising exact aviation phraseology made my night exciting, challenging and fulfilling.

Thanks to all Vatsim guys behind the scenes who make this hobby of oiiur possible (IT, Events, Training, Management, etc) You guys rock!

Ok guys, gotta go flying.  Look forward to the next one!

    Kindest Regards and Safe flight.

  8. Harrison and Callum,

Thank goodness you guys are so talented with IT.  If it was left to us pilots there would be no Vatpac website whatsoever. I am in awe of peoples abilities in our community.

Harrison, Callum and anyone else involed in our IT branch, my hat is off to you guys. Kudos.

    Regards

  9. Hand flying an approach keeps you "minding the shop" at all times. At lower levels (below 5000 AGL) automation complacency can result in altitude and tracking excursions unsafely during a critical stage of flight.

In the flight simulator world we fly complex aircraft single pilot. This means a second brain and set of eyes are not there to provide contingency for errors.

I always hand flew my aircraft below 5000 AGL despite having an autopilot.

It kept my flying skills sharp and gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

My 9 year old can fly a coupled ILS with the autopilot ON, but he can't with it OFF!

Humans are worst at monitoring. Don't get lured into a false sense of security through automation.

    Just my 2 cents.
