Nick, let me know if you need a hand with that.

Thx Bill ...i may call on you to go over a few articles re syllabus ...and if demand gets too heavy i may ask you to be one of the "qualified pilots"...thx again

  2. With the exciting development of FS 2020 and the extraordinary scenery that it promises to bring (see scenery update) FS2020 basically is aimed at "the serious flight simmer". As a regular VFR pilot I therefore propose to run regular tutorials on flying Cessna 172 & later the 182. The tutorials will be linked up tp Teamspeak where we go through airspace classification, flight planning, understanding VFR charts, radio calls in CTAF and controlled airspace, and fuel planning using performance charts. From basic flights where we will fly from one controlled aerodrome to another and eventually progressing to more complicated flights departing one controlled aerodrome and flying into another controlled aerodrome. Later on each pilot will be tested by me using teamviewer on their "check rides". If obviously there are too many participants i will seek the help of "qualified pilots". I intend to get as close to real world situations as possible. Prerequisites for the course will be FS2020, Australian VFR charts, & depending on whether Active sky will be linked to FS2020 or if FS2020 will have their own weather engine. Each participant will be given a syllabus at the beginning which will be followed rigorously each week. This course will require a lot of commitment so be prepared. Seeking numbers at the moment so if interested reply "I'm in"...btw do not participate if you are just bored because i will test you on previous material and if you have not put in the effort then i will kick you off the course. This is going to take a lot of work on my behalf so i don't want time wasters. But i guarantee you in the end  you will enjoy VFR flying . If students are then interested we will progress to IFR using basic navigation techniques.

    My point exactly, Bill.

Iron Mic is an occasional "binge" and not something the community should be concerned with.

Actively encouraging members (particularly vulnerable younger members) to "overclock" themselves (for want of a better term) is something I'm simply suggesting should be carefully discussed and considered.

Controller burnout is a real thing too.....isn't it Nick F? ;)

Don't know if i'm burnt out Tracy...just older & more crankier & annoyed that in this modern era of technology kids these days don't know how to use initiative (remember that word Tracy??)  and resources online to find out what for eg what is a departure report , what is the difference between Class C & Class E airspace...and the list goes on...and their attitude is all i need is some dumb parent to allow me to buy PMDG 737  ....AND AWAAAAAAAY I GO...ahh... youthful ignorance is such bliss...BTW applies to some 40'ish olds as well...wink...wink...

  4. Hi Fellow Flight Simmers & random Web surfies,

Just saw an interesting You Tube video regarding FS2020

So what is the future of scenery designers and 3rd party weather add ons considering FS2020 have used adaptive bandwidth technology using ability of all cores on your computer.

  5. Today i'm trying to promote an open discussion group ( IN THE FORM OF A QUIZ ) and trying to construct some active dialogue in establishing a forum to reinforce or introduce some basic concepts to those members who are either experienced and just learning how to fly. The reason being is that what i have found  is that even though some members have countless hours on VATSIM and become fully competent in being able to fly jets is that this allowed them to bypass basic aeronautical skills like chart reading and basic navigational concepts that have to be accomplished in flying smaller aircraft. For example i was surprised to  find that when i asked a few members what the difference between barometric altitude and radio altitude when looking at minimas these members struggled to find an answer. So i hope members will actively participate and therefore expand or increase their aeronautical knowledge.

    QUESTION:

So you are the pilot in command of a Beechcraft Baron 60 (Category B aircraft) and you are inbound (FL190) from Cooktown on the W567 airway. (refer Skyvector - World Lo ). You have received your clearance and been advised to expect the runway 33 localizer approach. The ATIS is reporting the following relevant information:
    WIND: 320/25
    VISIBILITY: 4000 metres in rain
    CLOUD: Overcast at 800 feet

Brisbane Centre clears you to descend to 10,000 ft and at 40 DME CS to contact CS APP on 118.4.
CS APP clears you to track from overhead CS VOR via the 117 radial, join the 24 DME arc to intercept the runway 33 localiser.

Which of the following is correct concerning the approach plate to use?

    1. Any of RWY 33 LOC ‘Whiskey’, ‘X-Ray’, ‘Yankee’ or ‘Zulu’

    2. Only RWY 33 LOC 'X-Ray ' or 'Zulu'.

    3. Only RWY 33 LOC 'Whiskey'

    4. Either RWY 33 LOC ‘Whiskey’ or ‘Yankee'.

  6. ANSWER QUESTION 2:

Once again thank you to all those that bothered to answer the quiz. For those people that said number 2 was the answer take a bow.

Under the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) .....ENR 1.5-46 para 10.2.3.(see below)

As you can see the STAR is lateral navigation (LNAV) first and foremost. ATC will issue vertical navigation (VNAV) as and when traffic permits.

  7. Hi,

As some of you may or may not be aware the latest NVidia graphic cards have incorporated into them " RX technology" This basically means ray tracing and it looks like it will be the next game changer for flight simmers. However the engineering hasn't been developed to incorporate this new technology however XPlane are looking at ways to bring this new technology onboard...https://developer.x-plane.com/2018/08/nvidia-rtx-ends-with-an-x-x-plane-starts-with-one-perfect-match/

I found this article very interesting and reinforces my decision to switch to XPlane.

  8. QUESTION 2:

You are the pilot in command of a  Hawker 700A flying a business executive from Auckland to Melbourne and have been cleared for the BADGR Nine A arrival  rwy 16 and been cleared down to 9000 ft by Melbourne Centre and been handed off to Melbourne Approach. You are approaching waypoint ANDYS and you note that you have met the the 9000 ft requirement (see attachment). Your IAS is 250 kts. You take note that your next altitude requirement is 6000 ft at NEFER.

Which of the following is correct concerning this altitude requirement?

    1. Since you are cleared via the STAR you can descend via pilot discretion to meet this and any other subsequent altitude restrictions.

    2. You may only descend when ATC give you a specific descent clearance.

    3. Since you are cleared via the STAR you can descend to meet the  lowest safe altitude (LSALT) requirements as published on the STAR plate.

    4. Since you are cleared via the STAR you can descend to meet the minimum sector altitude (MSA) requirement of 4500 ft as published on the STAR plate.

I eagerly await your dialogue and by Friday i will give you the answer.

  9. First of all thank you to all who have responded. Judging by the number of responses it seems to me that many people are a bit reluctant to answer in fear of being "exposed" in their level of knowledge. Rest assured that this is neither a competition or a test to expose anyone as to their level of knowledge. It is purely a is way of opening up a constructive dialogue between members. OK and now for the answer....drum roll....btw those of you who have said the answer is 2 & 3...well done...

    ANSWER:

The thing to remember is that there are 3 speeds to consider:

    1. Published speed restriction which is published on the SID chart as seen in the diagram:

    image.png.218bcfc7ba7868e45c1298507dfa2e72.png

    2. ATC issued speed control restrictions (there were none given in this case)

    3. This is the one that many people forget or are not aware of. In the ERSA from the  YMML FAC under FLIGHT PROCEDURES (Item 1) we have the following:

    image.png.78b86ef42dabb98a1af8c0f2af5b84ad.png

Hopefully this has helped to add or supplement peoples knowledge.

As stated i will be adding another quiz on Monday (whether ATC or pilot related) so hopefully people will be a bit more respondent.

Don't forget the stupidest question you can ask is the one that you DON'T ask.

    Regards

  10. Hi Tyson and welcome. May I suggest you install Teamspeak and log onto the Vatpac site. I was the controller who was controlling you so you had the best....lol...anyhow it seems that you had a few issues including flying the SID. Vatpac teamspeak is a great resource where you can talk to experienced controllers and pilots who can then direct you to web pages or you tube videos to help make your experience more enjoyable. Once you get taught the right way then it makes the journey so much more enjoyable....good luck.

  11. The common argument has been that XPlane gives you a better flight simulation model than either FSX or P3D. (blade theory technology i believe it's called). I have used both FSX and P3D but with my computer update i am now going to install XPlane on one drive and P3D on the other purely because of the amount of scenery that i have purchased for P3D and i love flying my A2A aircraft (C172, C182, Bonanza) which are second to none. The fact that Orbx is now coming to the party with XPlane is also another reason. As Greg has said it is far easier to develop your own scenery in XPlane than it is for the other 2 platforms which is something i'll be getting into. BTW the only thing that i don't like about XPlane is that there are no seasons...it's always summer!!

Sorry, what I'm after is the make e.g. It's a NVIDIA Card, but is it made by ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI etc.

As Sam said, a photo would be your best bet of ID'ing it

About a year old ...btw Aidan McCoy was with me when i bought it so he can verify authenticity of age...

  14. As you all know I control CTR-SNO quite often and as you all know I extend infrequently. The times I do extend is when I see on Vatspy the pilots to whom I do extend are of certain capabilities because on certain occasions I have been so caught up in trying to sort out some “newbie” that I have been distracted and consequently have been “caught out”. I’d rather concentrate on one area and provide excellent service than cover 2 or 3 areas and provide average service, so if you happen to be in Sydney and get extended service from me then consider it a compliment... lol

    Afternoon Nick,

Awesome Idea! This will be very beneficial for our members - However, so people don't cheat, it would be better to make this as a Quiz Each Week so people can vote on what is correct. To do this, select Poll instead of content, you will have to include only answers, then make a post with the question separate.

    image.png.015818e514da196ddeb480ab2c414b57.png

    BTW - It is (2)

Appreciate your input Josh but I’m interested in people’s input rather than just a poll because then gives them the opportunity to argue their case (see post above). I think it is a far more constructive and meaningful way to learn.

  16. Hi all,

I am in the process of upgrading my computer and have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB graphics card to sell. Looking at ~$250 ono. I live in Perth so if interested and you live interstate then need to discuss to work logistics.

  17. Hi everyone,

Seeing  that i now have have a lot of free time i would like to start a quiz going where i'm asking people to respond in order to help people increase their knowledge in this our hobby we all love. So from today onwards i'm going to ask a series of quiz questions involving both piloting and/or ATC. At the end of the week i will give you an answer and the appropriate reference material and then post another question. Good luck to all who wish to participate.

    Question 1:

You are the pilot in command (PIC) of an IFR Hawker 700A (VH-JET) and have departed Melbourne (Rwy 34) and your destination is Alice Springs. You have flight planned along the H164 airway and have been cleared on the Keppa 1 SID. Now passing "OKMEL" (which is a waypoint on the SID) and turning towards "KEPPA" you pass through 4500 feet. Melbourne Departures say "Juliet Echo Tango, climb via the SID to FL240, cancel speed restrictions"

Which of the following speeds does this refer to?

    1. It refers to the usual 250 kts IAS maximum in Class C airspace below 10,000 ft.

    2. Ir refers to the published speed restrictions of 250 kts IAS on the SID plate below 10,000 ft.

    3. It would refer to to any ATC speed control instruction given but in this example there were none.
