Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Canberra! Canberra airport is the major airport serving Australia's capital city and features several domestic destinations and a couple of international ones too, placing it as Australia's 8th busiest airport. Join us from September 30th to October 6th as we attempt to take home yet another Iron Mic.

The following positions will be the primary positions:
CB_TWR
CB_APP
ML-SNO_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Canberra prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon!

What is Iron Mic?
Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.
Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT)
How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Canberra positions. You can do this on Facebook, Teamspeak or the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good Luck VATPAC!

This Weeks Flight for Wednesday 2nd October 2019 starting at 8.00pm AEST commences a four week flight around Lesotho. For those who do not know, Lesotho is an independent country landlocked within South Africa. Lesotho is a mostly mountainous country similar to Papua New Guinea however without the vegetation and has many very challenging airfields. For this reasons flight times appear relatively short however time will be taken to locate and land.
The flight is based upon scenery created for X-Plane 11.30 by Alex-C downloadable here Lesotho_Africa 1.1.  Please note there are two files listed, you only need the file 1.1.  Small download only 245KB and is a  must have for the flight  as most of the airfileds are NOT in X-Plane (nor other simulators.). It is presumed that pilots know how to install Custom Scenery. If not, then there are numerous tutorials available via your search engine.
Unfortunately this series of flights can only really be flown in XP11 although other sims can fly the route and in some cases may even have “better” scenery.
It is also most advantageous but not necessary to create Ortho4xp tiles for the scenery ( you would need about 7 tiles) due to the improved mesh that is also created within the Ortho4xp program.  Mountains are quite respectable in default in any case.
PS: After installing scenery do not forget to update the relevant scenery bases in whichever other programs you might use. i.e. FSTramp,  PlanG,  Little Nav Map etc.

Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields.
FSCopilot/FSInn
VATSIM pilots connecting to the network using FSCOPILOT/FSINN can install an additional file that provides the ability to tune the CTAF frequency and make voice announcements to other pilots on frequency. These files can be obtained via this link.

Swift
Swift is a recent VATSIM Pilot Client alternative now released to the public as a beta release candidate. This pilot client is a one fits all alternative and will work with FSX, P3D V3/V4 and XPlane in either 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Windows, Mac and Linux. This client, once installed and configured (not for the faint of heart - some guidance can be found in this video tutorial for those with X-Plane on Windows x64), also provides a capability for pilots to designate a private voice channel to allow communication with other pilots in the same voice channel. However, to do this requires a frequency over ride to be set allowing the client to ignore the set frequency instead providing text entry into a text box. Into this box the name of the voice room needs to be entered to enable voice communication. A voice room is typically in the form of "some.server.org/<Airport ICAO>". The server component is ALWAYS "rw1.vatpac.org". So this week's departure would use "rw1.vatpac.org/<Airport ICAO>".
For airports without an airport ICAO it is typical to use VATPAC VFR Virtual voice room acccessed using 131.25 in FSINN. The equivalent for SWIFT is "rw1.vatpac.org/virtualvfr".

Ladies and Gentleman!

The Events Team is proud to present the latest major event for this year, TMA Turnaround Canberra!

What is TMA Turnaround you may ask? Well, We love having competitions featured in our events to keep everyone participating for as long as possible. With this in mind, The aim will be to fly as many sectors between the nominated airports as possible, in the 4 hour period. We will have tracking in place using VATPAC Statistics. It requires that you fly from Gate to Gate, Shutting down your engines prior to commencing the next sector. However.. this time around we will be running things a little bit different..

The Details
The aim is for all aircraft of any type to make as many inbound / outbound trips to YSCB in the 4 hours allocated. Busy airspace is a exiting! Additionally we will be rostering basic ATC services at YMML and YSSY as potential destinations for YSCB. We want to smash the TMA with as many aircraft as we can and put our controllers to the test. Expect Delays so plan additional holding fuel and hopefully we wont have any fuel emergencies!
We have planned routes for pilots to ensure traffic will be able to transition easily between the selected airports. Please see the below routes for the flight.

YSCB - YMML
(JET) DCT TANTA Q29 LIZZI
(NON-JET) DCT DUBBO V169 BOYSE

YMML - YSCB
(ALL) DCT DOSEL Y59 ARRAN

YSCB - YSSY
(JET) DCT CULIN Y59 RIVET
(NON-JET) DCT AKMIR W113 ODALE

YSSY - YSCB
(JET) DCT WOL H65 RAZZI
(NON-JET) DCT CORDO V169 BUNGO

Other traffic including VFR that arrive from or depart to a different aerodrome than listed above should can expect delays but are more than welcome. Any aircraft that wish to fly from YMML/YSSY and don't file the route above can expect delays/holding.
Before logging on, Please check which airport has less departures at the time to ensure traffic is evenly spread across the TMA.
With some fantastic scenery available for all these airports, we hope to see some fantastic pictures!

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

With Vatsim being upgraded on Monday, this week's Milkrun was cancelled.
Now, the Vatsim servers are back online. The radio waves are clearer than ever. It's time to Fly!
There are a lot of airports north of Brisbane with a great variety of airspace.
Whether you are in Class C airspace, class D airspace, Class E airspace or even class G airspace, it's time to check out some of the new features available on Vatsim.
Rockhampton sees a variety of aircraft including Boeing 737, Bombardier Q400, Saab 340, Fokker 100 and more. Rockhampton has a Class D tower. After hours, some special arrangements are in place whereby Brisbane Centre controllers operate Rockhampton Approach in Class E airspace as low as 700ft above the airfield.
Not far south, Bundaberg is an uncontrolled airport with a CTAF which sees a mix of aircraft including Qantaslink Q400's and 300's.
Brisbane is a fully fledged International airport with Clearance Delivery, Surface Movement, Tower and Approach controllers.

Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

This Weeks Flight for Wednesday 30th October 2019 starting at 8.30pm AEDT commences a series of legs following the famous ROUTE 66 Lyrics, a blues standard composed by Bobby Troup in 1946 and first recorded by Nat King Cole in the same year.
Just google the lyrics and you will find out where we will be going.
Well if you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it winds from Chicago to LA
More than two thousands miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it goes to St. Louis...............

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
