Event Details
Aerial Fire Suppression Training Exercise - Vicinity of Canberra - XP11 pilots should install accompanying scenery using the link provided.
NOTE : This special event comes at the cost of multi-simulator support. This event is intended to be conducted with the aid of a custom piece of scenery that inserts some smoking targets into existing scenery. FS2020 lacks the ability for aircraft to dump and load addtional payloads. P3D does support this however the author of this flight lacks a copy of the simulator and more importantly its "Software Development Kit", the component that allows for the creation of customised P3D scenery. (Someone wanting to use P3D that has the knowledge to create the scenery is welcome to PM me to obtain the coordinates of the target zones).
Those pilots not flying X-Plane 11 can still fly this exercise since all the relevant targets are located at legitimate airports, lakes and townships. Any simulator will be capable of depicting all of these. P3D supports aircraft capable of water bombing and water scooping and as such could fly suppression to targets visible in their respective simulator. Those who wish to fly FS2020 will lack the fire bombing capability however can still accompany pilots that can.
Simulation Date/Time : Current date set to daylight.
Weather : Real World / Fair weather if real world is unsuitable for VFR operations.
Distance : greater than 125 nm
Est Flight Time : approx 80 mins
Altitude : Remain below Canberra CTA Steps once clear after departure
Aircraft : Twin engine aircraft capable of carrying two tanks of water/retardent that can be dumped together or independently. The aircraft should also be capable of "scooping" its load of water from a suitable body of water thus allowing it to operate continuously without the need to land and reload. Examples of such suitable aircraft include the Consolidated PBY Catalina X-Plane 11 and is the preferred aircraft type for this event. The Canadair CL415 (X-Plane)/CL215 represents a potential fallback alternative however the X-Plane 11 variant has some inconvenient limitations. (refer to "Know Your Water Bombing Aircraft" below)
Know your water bombing aircraft
Which ever aircraft is chosen, pilots should familiarise themselves with the technicalities of ;
-
deploying/retracting the scoop and using this to refill tanks.
(X-Plane CL415 mandates use of a hotkey to deploy/retract scoop) - dumping the contents of each tank
-
designating whether both or a single tank is to be dumped
(X-Plane CL415 is not capable of dropping partial payloads)
NOTE : The provided smoke target scenery has an additional target located in WA. The target is situated at the Barbagello Raceway, east of RAAF Base Pearce. Southwest of the raceway targets is Lake Jandaloop and is an excellent location to practice scooping up the necessary water payloads.
The target and water body are conveniently located and offer ample opportunity for pilots to tune their skills and aircraft in preparation for the event. Enjoy!

No GPS Flightplan is provided for this event.
Navigation : This flight can be easily navigated visually. Note : Radials and DME distance is provided relative to Canberra VORDME and should porvide a means of verifying an aircraft's position in all phases of this flight
Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.
