    DAY

    06 July 2020      12 July 2020

Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Melbourne. Help us celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Milk Run Monday with our week of events, including an Iron Mic attempt!

The following positions will be the primary positions:

    ML_TWR
    ML_APP
    ML-SNO_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Melbourne prior to occupying others. We will be trialling a reservation system where you'll be able to allocate your availability for a position in two hour blocks. If there isn't anyone online however, please jump on!

    What is Iron Mic?
Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.
Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT)
How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Melbourne positions. You can do this via Facebook, Discord and the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/topic/2299-the-rules/

    12 July 2020 07:00 AM      10:00 AM

Welcome to the final day of VATPAC's week long event extravaganza as we celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of Milk Run Monday! After a short delay, VATPAC invites you back for yet another Panic Stations Event! This time, we - like we have been all week - will be targeting Melbourne Airport.
Depart from Sydney International (YSSY,) Adelaide (YPAD,) Canberra (YSCB,) Launceston (YMLT,) or Hobart (YMHB) with full ATC inbound for Melbourne Airport (YMML) between 0700z - 1000z.

    Event Details:
Panic Stations is a simple, yet quite challenging event. Get as many aircraft flying to the destination airport as possible, with only one objective. Arrive at or after the target time to enjoy bragging rights... Well, until the next panic stations event that is!
For this round, VATPAC will be returning to the traditional Panic Stations format that we know the community has grown to love over the past decade! However, during these unprecedented times, we intend to staff up the aerodromes closest to Melbourne as possible Departure locations for Pilots.
    Available titles for people to win during this event;
JET & NON-JET Winner  Touch Down Time for this event is 0900z
Expect delays as we try and accommodate everyone whilst maintaining separation standards! We look forward to seeing you all there!

    Routes:
VATPAC recommends the following routes to fly into Melbourne from the nominated departure locations. These are only some of the possible departure points you could do - Scenery for these recommended routes can be found below.

    Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts.
VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.

GPS flight plan is available for FSX/P3D .pln, MFS2020 .pln, X-Plane .fms and Little Navmap.
Navigation: Pilots are encouraged to navigate visually. For those less familiar the GPS flight plan is the recommended method of navigation.
      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.
