Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. Canberra is a busy Class C Airport with a wide variety of traffic including Commercial, Military and General Aviation traffic. Aircraft intending to operate VFR in Canberra airspace will need ATC clearance departing and arriving the airport.
Pilots are urged to thoroughly familiarise themselves with Canberra (Enroute Supplement) prior to operating in and around Canberra airport. Pilots should also reference the accompanying VTC (Visual Terminal Chart) or avail themselves with the full PDF version available at the Air Services Australia website for download.

CANBERRA [YSCB] Takeoff
IF ATC Active, DO NOT TAXI until ATIS and clearance has been obtained. Call, identify yourself by call sign and aircraft type and request "VFR DEPARTURE SOUTH VIA MICHELAGO". Expect to receive a cleared departure (runway, turn direction), Altitude, Transponder Code all of which will need to be read back in conjunction with your parked location at the aiport, presumably the GA apron. A departure frequency may also be provided under some circumstances.
Once the transponder code is input a call can be placed to request taxi. Advise receipt of ATIS "RECEIVED CANBERRA INFORMATION [ATIS IDENTIFIER]" when making the request.

Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Melbourne. Help us celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Milk Run Monday with our week of events, including an Iron Mic attempt!

The following positions will be the primary positions:

ML_TWR
ML_APP
ML-SNO_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Melbourne prior to occupying others. We will be trialling a reservation system where you'll be able to allocate your availability for a position in two hour blocks. If there isn't anyone online however, please jump on!

What is Iron Mic?
Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.
Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT)
How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Melbourne positions. You can do this via Facebook, Discord and the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/topic/2299-the-rules/

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

Welcome to the final day of VATPAC's week long event extravaganza as we celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of Milk Run Monday! After a short delay, VATPAC invites you back for yet another Panic Stations Event! This time, we - like we have been all week - will be targeting Melbourne Airport.
Depart from Sydney International (YSSY,) Adelaide (YPAD,) Canberra (YSCB,) Launceston (YMLT,) or Hobart (YMHB) with full ATC inbound for Melbourne Airport (YMML) between 0700z - 1000z.

Event Details:
Panic Stations is a simple, yet quite challenging event. Get as many aircraft flying to the destination airport as possible, with only one objective. Arrive at or after the target time to enjoy bragging rights... Well, until the next panic stations event that is!
For this round, VATPAC will be returning to the traditional Panic Stations format that we know the community has grown to love over the past decade! However, during these unprecedented times, we intend to staff up the aerodromes closest to Melbourne as possible Departure locations for Pilots.
Available titles for people to win during this event;
JET & NON-JET Winner  Touch Down Time for this event is 0900z
Expect delays as we try and accommodate everyone whilst maintaining separation standards! We look forward to seeing you all there!

VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

This Weeks Flight on 15th July 2020 finds us in the Copper Canyon, Mexico. Copper Canyon, in northern Mexico, is a series of massive canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. Popular for hiking, it gets its name from the copper-green hue of the canyon walls. The famous Chepe (Ferrocarril Barrancas del Cobre) train connects the region via over 80 tunnels and nearly 40 bridges.
We will basically follow the rail line from Creel to Temoris (NB: The rail line is very windy and therefore the flight route is only indicative). We then leave the rail line and fly across many canyons finally returning to Creel via northern part of the Rio San Ignacio canyon.
Flight suggested by Dan McKee YMA555
Scenery Required: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/42499-copper-canyon/                              Only 33MB
Ensure to unzip to folder name "Copper Canyon" and that folder goes into your Custom Scenery folder. If unzip gives you two separate files Texture and Earth nav data, then create folder named Copper Canyon and place those two folders inside and then copy Copper Canyon to Custom Scenery.
As usual please remember to rebuild your data bases after adding new scenery airports i.e. FSTramp, LNM, PlanG etc

VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

This Weeks Flight on 29th July 2020 finds us in France where we will fly from Aix-Les-Bains (LFLB) to airfields commonly referred to as Altiports which are in effect gateways to the skying resorts in the Alps. The flight will finish at the very challenging Courchevel (LFLJ). Before Courchevel the stop at Meribel which is also challenging, is a full stop, turn around and departure.
Flight suggested by Dan McKee YMA555
Scenery Suggested:
Latest airport scenery from the Gateway. Just type in ICAO. Download will tell you if you already have it in your version of X-Plane.
Courchevel (LFLJ) n the XP Gateway. Courchevel not included in XP11.41
Meribel (LFKX) There is also a recent Gateway scenery not included in XP 11.41
There are quite a few of the airfields that are also recent and new to the Gateway and are not included in XP11.41
Related mesh can be obtained from Alpilot UHD Mesh look for download titled "Europe – Alps" a large download at 3.9GB but very handy to have in your scenery. Many will already have this from previous recent flight in the Alps.
Aircraft Suggested: C90B, BE58 or similar capable of 120-150 kias (Handy to have reverse prop capability for Meribel and Courchevel).
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC

You know it’s the end of the month when Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This Easter, we are bringing back the popular Easter Egg Hunt! On the 1st of April, depart Sydney in search of 3 easter eggs at three differrent airports inside the great state of New South Wales.
The first pilot to identify, fly to and land at each airport wins!
Hints for where these airports will be released on the VATPAC Discord.

      Edition Details:
The Idea of this Edition of Spilled Milk Run Monday is similar to the Easter Egg Hunt we did last year. From 0800z, one hint will be released every 30 minutes on the VATPAC Discord providing 3 different hints, one for each of the three different airport locations. Pilots then depart Sydney in search for the airports. Once a pilot lands at the airport they believe the Easter egg is at, they take a screenshot and post it in the VATPAC Discord's Event Channel. The first pilot to correctly land and take a screenshot at each airport wins!
Pilots and controllers must follow the relevant criteria below in order to be eligible to win a prize!

      Edition Details:
thanks to the generous donations of some of the VATPAC staff, there will be four prizes up for grabs during the Easter egg hunt. The prizes are as follows:
Pilots: 3 x  €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Vouchers - 1 per airport Controllers: 1 x €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Voucher - all eligible controllers will be added to a draw and randomly selected to win the prize. In order to be eligible to win one of the prizes pilots and controllers must follow the following procedures:
      Pilots:
All pilots must depart Sydney (YSSY) and remain online and connected for the duration of the flight Pilots must not use any sim rate enhancement at any time. Doing so will automatically result in disqualification. Pilots must follow all controller instructions and not take purposeful shortcuts or refuse sequencing to try and shorten the duration of their flight. VATPAC events staff, senior staff and directors are not eligible to win pilot prizes. Pilots must not use high performance aircraft to reduce their flights duration. This includes fighter jets, high altitude / speed airliners such as the Concorde, or any other aircraft purposely chosen for an unrealistic speed advantage. Upon arrival at the chosen airfield, pilots must post a screenshot on the VATPAC discord #events channel showing their simulator, and a tracking software (Volanta, Simaware) with the flight plan showing the whole flight and tag an event coordinator. Pilots are only eligible to receive one (1) prize. Pilot can only depart Sydney once the first hint is released. All flights to correct airports will be closely tracked by Event Coordinators. If a member of the events team believes your flight was not in observance of the above criteria, or that you had any form of unfair advantage, they may deem you ineligible to receive a prize.

      Controllers:
All rostered and unrostered controllers who contributed for at least one hour will be considered for the prize Controllers not active for the duration of their rostered period (without a valid excuse) will be ineligible for the draw Controllers who already received a pilot prize will not be eligible for the draw At the close of the event the winners of each category will be announced.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
      BN-ARL_CTR ML-YWE_CTR ML-BIK_CTR
SY_APP SY_TWR SY_GND SY_DEL *Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the Standard positions are filled. Please see a member of Staff, or a C3 rated controller to be granted permission to open a non-standard position. Please review the controller NOTAM for detailed information about which Non-Standard Positions are automatically authorized.

Highlights will be two of the most dangerous airfields in the world, Gustaf III Airport (TFFJ) on St Barthelemy Island with a very steep arrival and the other being Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on the island of SABA which is only 400 metres in length.
Approaches in to Gustaf III Airport (TFFJ) can use either rwy 10 (left hand pattern) or rwy 28 (also left hand pattern). The arrival using rwy 10 is very steep which makes it quite dangerous. NB: rwy 28 can only be used for full stop arrivals so any T&G's will have to use rwy 10, the steep one). Airport is open to all traffic however note aircraft type required. Refer link for details.
Approaches into SABA (TNCS) can use either rwy 12 (Lefthand pattern) or Rwy 30 (Right hand pattern). Runways both have an “X” at each end however this just represents the fact that the airport is closed to all but specific licenced traffic. Refer link for details.

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.
