Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Melbourne. Help us celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Milk Run Monday with our week of events, including an Iron Mic attempt! The following positions will be the primary positions: ML_TWR ML_APP ML-SNO_CTR To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Melbourne prior to occupying others. We will be trialling a reservation system where you'll be able to allocate your availability for a position in two hour blocks. If there isn't anyone online however, please jump on! What is Iron Mic? Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic. Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT) How do we know about our progress? For twenty hours this June, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch. An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from three to four-and-a-half hours flight time. Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions – VATNZ and VATPAC – will be providing full ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event. This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight! If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our reporting tool makes taking part a breeze. Event Times This twenty hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world join the fun: UTC: Saturday 20th June 2020 18:00 - Sunday 21st June 2020 14:00 AEST: Sunday 21st June 2020 04:00 - Monday 22nd June 2020 00:00 NZST: Sunday 21st June 2020 06:00 - Monday 22nd June 2020 02:00 Waves This season's event is organised in waves. Each airport will have a two-to-four hour departure window, during which time flights will be able to leave for the next destination. As the window closes, the departure window will open at the next destination. Given each of the flights is 2 - 4.5hrs in length, the previous wave's flights will be arriving at the same airport as the next wave departs, maximising the amount of traffic at each airport. NOTE: in order to ensure that you have ATC coverage throughout your flight, you MUST fly the wave route that is active at the time of your departure. The individual routes are designed to ensure as much opposing traffic enroute as possible. Each flight passes from one Oceania division to the other, and the result is six mini-flyins over the course of twenty hours! This Week In case you weren't available for the Panic Stations Fix, this week we're moving up the coast to sunny Bris-Vegas where we have just had major changes to the airspace. Where before the airspace was somewhat of a sensible, well-laid out airspace; we are left with what is literally a birds-nest of SIDs and STARs. Bring along your new Navigraph AIRAC to explore the changes. Please note ATC will not be assigning runway 19R/01L unless requested. This is due to the lack of updated scenery in some simulators and the fact the runway isn't open yet. We also are highly encouraging anybody who would like to come and fly VFR in Class D (Archerfield – YBAF, and Sunshine Coast – YBSU), Class G (note the new airspace lower limits), or even Class C (fancy some city orbits?). This Week This week, we're New Zealand bound to join in the fun at Auckland and Christchurch thanks to VATNZ's Friday Night Shift event! Fly from Sydney and Melbourne to New Zealand with full ATC from gate to gate. We're looking to staff up Melbourne & Sydney TMA as well as Tasman. The event won't have specified start or end times as the purpose of this event is to bring all of our ATC together to provide a highly realistic experience! With this in mind, you'll want to be departing from the afternoon to take advantage of full ATC on arrival into New Zealand. Additionally, There'll also be members of the training department around giving everyone tips and tricks on positions they may not have controlled before!
