  1. Hi guys

For any other Mac users out there, I thought I'd let you know that Euroscope can be successfully installed on the Mac OS.

First I installed Apple Xcode 4 from my installation DVD. Then I installed MacPorts http://www.macports.org/. From this you can then install Wine. Wine is the program that tricks the Windows program into thinking it is operating in Windows. I followed the tutorial here http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ to install Wine through MacPorts. I'd recommend reading his tutorial a few times to make sure when it comes to typing things in the command line Terminal you don't do something stupid. I'm by no means a computer whizz but I managed to install it successfully following his tutorial. Then when all this is installed correctly you download Euroscope and install it from the Downloads folder using Terminal (all contained in that tutorial). The same can be done for TAAATS Mod.

At first some strange things happened - CPDLC didn't work and the wake turbulence category didn't show. I figured this is because Euroscope was looking for important data files in the My Documents folder, which of course doesn't exist on a Mac. To get access to the new "Windows folders" and make sure all the important files were there I used Tinkertool to show hidden folders in Finder. There is one called ".wine" and in there you can copy all the TAAATS Mod files, sector, ATIS files into the same place. It doesn't have to be in a separate My Documents folder like on Windows. I've been using it for about two weeks and works well. Only thing I can't do yet is change the cursor.

Hope that is of use to some people.

    And finally, the proof:

  2. Hi,

From my perspective the flow program worked very well. It gave some method to the madness and meant the delaying action was for a reason. The more we use it the less 'panic' we'll have at these events. :)

GVCCS is a wonderful addition and made talking to FLOW particularly easy.

  3. If the term 'Radar' is used when addressing ATC (rather than Control or Centre) ... what do they use in procedural / non-radar environments of which there must enormous areas such as this across Russia?

Some time ago there was a http://www.liveatc.net feed for Irkutsk. At certain times of the day the frequencies were rather busy with position reports. The HF frequencies were referred to as "Irkutsk Control". You might want to check out if those feeds are still up.

  4. Hi guys,

Tonight I opened Bankstown TWR as part of the Australia Online events. Generally there was a good showing of traffic, several IFR departures and arrivals and a few circuit aircraft thrown in for fun.

A couple of pilots contacted me to ask how often Bankstown was open and whether it could occur with some kind of regularity.

I'd like to suggest incorporating some kind of "VFR controlled airport" night into the weekly line-up (or fortnightly even). At the moment the VFR events tend to be at out of the way airports which don't lend themselves to interaction with ATC. Perhaps the event could cycle through the typical GA airports like Bankstown, Archerfield, Morrabbin etc.

I know VFR pilots are quite active with their own events and this is great. Just wondering if it might be worthwhile increasing the chances for interaction (for both VFR and GA IFR traffic) with ATC on a more regular basis.

    Regards,

  5. Hey guys,

Was a great night for ATC. The lack of any other enroute controllers meant I had 15 aircraft on frequency at one point!

Nice flying by the pilots who followed sequencing instructions perfectly.

  6. Is the difference between DCT MIA V173 CANTY H119 ARBEY ARBEY6 and DCT MIA V173 CANTY H119 ML DCT ARBEY6 really that crucial?

ENR 12.2.1 defines a STAR identification as:

A STAR identifier is composed of the following items:

    a. a basic indicator, which is the name of the arrival fix at which the

    arrival route begins;

I think pilots are clever enough to realise that the RIVET9 arrival, for example, commences at RIVET and does not require them to continue all the way to the SY VOR before turning 45 miles back to start their arrival. Hopefully the controller is that clever too! As far as I know ATC don't seek to clarify this with every STAR clearance issued.

  7. Um I was lookin around the VATPAC website under Airspace and found this

Or does this mean that the approach controller owns some class A airspace and not just class C

The class A starts at F180 in "J-curve" radar airspace, F245 everywhere else. So in the cases where the TMA extends above F180, eg. YSSY F280, YMML F240 then the approach controller has some class A.

  8. Regardless of whether the aircraft is identified or not' date=' the pilot is still required to conduct mandatory posreps and aireps at the nominated fixes as specified on the applicable enroute chart.[/quote']

Are you sure this isn't only mandatory when the aircraft has not been identified?

Looking at one of my ERH charts I can see black triangles at MDG, PKS, MARLN, CAWLY, INOKE etc etc - all well within radar coverage for people operating up in the flight levels and I've never heard a position report there before.

I think they are only mandatory when position reporting is in use eg. not identified.

  9. They should know to stop giving position reports when you notify them that they are identified.

Eg. ATC: QFA2, identified 130nm west of PKS

Assumedly the pilot would then know that he is within ATC surveillance coverage and doesn't need to give position reports.

Just as "QFA31, identification terminated" would indicate that position reporting is now required.

  10. Hey Sean,

As far as I know identification refers to the situation when the position indication (label) of an aircraft is seen on the ATC screen and positively 'identified'. After this has occurred then ATC can provide a surveillance service to the aircraft. The process of identification can occur a few different ways, for example coorelating with a departure report, observing a change in heading, squawking a specific code or ident function etc etc.

I don't believe the term 'radar identified' is used in Australia. 'Identified' is just the generic term regardless of how you are identified, be it via radar source or ADS-B.

  11. Perhaps some other online ATC managed to take a few screenshots.

Here are a few from Sydney Director (West). The job was made very easy by a nice sequence and pilots following instructions in a timely manner.

    Good work everyone!

My favourite moment was hearing PBN73 declare quite calmly that he was "taxiing to the bay" as they hurtled off the end of 34R at about 80 kts. It gave the ATC something to chuckle at!

  12. Hey guys,

Tonight I'll cover ML-KLG centre (extending north into PIL sector)from about 0900Z. If anyone is interested in venturing west then come and join me!

I managed to get quite a few pilots when I advertised here last week, hopefully I can repeat that tonight.

    Regards,

    Andrew

  13. Hi,

I intend to provide ATC for the BN-DAT sector tonight from approximately 0900Z. If anyone desires to explore the far north then you'll have some coverage. I for one would like to see a change of scenery!

This sector is centered on the far north, from Cairns up etc. but I will extend south as far as possible.

    Andrew.
