  2. Hi David, sorry for taking a while to get to this.

I would like to have separate briefings for pilots and controllers, as the documents provide good quick reference materials for both pilots and controllers into the future.

As for ATC training objectives, @Tyler H - 1443158 said during the meeting he is willing to take lead on that. It would be worth a discussion with Matt K to flesh out the objectives a bit more.

For a date, I would suggest choosing a range of options that work, and suggest them to the Training Team to see who is available. It worked really well last time having a few instructors available who could sit and observe, and provide help and feedback for people controlling.

  5. Cross the Ditch 24

    Sydney Waves

June's winter weather means people are on the move. Sydneysiders are hitting the slopes of New Zealand's South Island ski fields, and sampling the cultural and tourist hotspots in the North Island's two largest cities. Kiwis are escaping the rain of a sodden 2023, and flocking to the nightlife and excitement of Australia's Harbour City. Folks in both countries are keen to spend these long mid-winter evenings with family and friends across the ditch.

On VATSIM this June, Sydney is truly where it's at, in Cross the Ditch 24: Sydney Waves.

Featured for Cross the Ditch 24

    • Airport Focus: Sydney, Australia

This event puts Sydney, Australia front and centre. The busiest airport in Australasia, Sydney's Kingsford Smith International (YSSY/SYD) is a hub in the operations of many of the region's largest airlines.

We will be bringing this bustle to VATSIM for Cross the Ditch 24 by using Sydney as the Australian airport in each of the event's Waves. Sydney (YSSY) will alternate as first destination, and then origin for five waves of flights linking Australia with three fan-favourite airports in New Zealand: first Wellington (NZWN), with its short runway and reputation for windy weather; then Queenstown (NZQN) with challenging approaches amid mountainous terrain; and finally Auckland (NZAA), New Zealand's largest city, recreating the two busiest international flight sectors in the entire Oceania region.

The Wave Schedule will allow enterprising pilots to complete all five sectors over the course of the day. Whether you fly only one wave or make it through all five, Cross the Ditch 24 will show why Sydney is such a special place.

    What's it all about?

For twenty hours this June, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch.

An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from two and a half to three and a half hours flight time.

Throughout the event, Oceania's two divisions – VATNZ and VATPAC – will be providing full gate-to-gate ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event.

This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight!

If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our reporting tool makes taking part a breeze.

    Event Times

This twenty hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world to join the fun:

    • UTC: Saturday 10th June 2023 18:00 - Sunday 11th June 2023 14:00
    • AEST: Sunday 11th June 2023 04:00 - Monday 12th June 2023 00:00
    • NZST: Sunday 11th June 2023 06:00 - Monday 12th June 2023 02:00

    Waves

This season's event is organised in waves. Each airport will have a three-and-a-half-to-four-and-a-half hour departure window, during which time flights will be able to leave for the next destination. As the window closes, the departure window will open at the next destination.

Given each of the flights is 2.5 - 3.5hrs in length, the previous wave's flights will be arriving at the same airport as the next wave departs, maximising the amount of traffic at each airport.

NOTE: in order to ensure that you have ATC coverage throughout your flight, you MUST fly the wave route that is active at the time of your departure.

The individual routes are designed to ensure as much opposing traffic enroute as possible.

Each flight passes from one Oceania division to the other, and the result is six mini-flyins over the course of twenty hours!

The Waves for Cross the Ditch 24: Sydney Waves are:

Get ready for the ultimate FIFO flight experience with VATPAC! We're bringing the laughs and the air miles as we whisk you away to Australia's Pilbara-Kimberley region on the first Thursday of every month. You won't believe your eyes when you see the red deserts that are so red, they make Elmo blush! And let's not forget those extraordinary rock formations that'll have you saying, "Who needs abstract art when nature's got it covered?"

But that's not all! We've got beautiful reefs that are so stunning, even the fish have started a modeling career. So hop on board and join us on June 15th, 2023, because we're opening up the stunning interior of Australia like never before. Our regional airfields are the gateway to connecting communities and sharing the joy of FIFO flights. Plus, with connections to Perth and Darwin, you'll have the chance to feel like a mining magnate or an adventure-seeking tourist. Just remember, no gold digging on the flight, folks!

Mark your calendars and set your alarm clocks because this adventure takes place between 0900z-1200z (1900-2200 AEST; 1700-2000 AWST). You don't want to miss the hilarity, the sights, and the chance to discover Australia's hidden gems. So fasten your seatbelts, stow away your fear of puns, and get ready for the funniest FIFO flight of your life!

    Airport of the Week:

One of the most thrilling elements of FIFO Downunder is our "Airport of the Week" feature. We've cooked up an exciting twist to keep you on your toes! Each event, we will reveal a series of clues to the selected airport, challenging your aviation knowledge and geographical instincts. Prepare to put your detective skills to the test!

The first three pilots to successfully decipher the clues and arrive at the designated airport will earn valuable points. Throughout a span of 6 months, we'll tally up the points, creating an exhilarating leaderboard where champions rise to the top. And that's not all – the pilot who reigns supreme at the end of the 6-month period will receive an incredible prize, and ultimate bragging rights of course!

This September, VATPAC invites you to Melbourne for the next edition of the Panic Stations series! Whether you fly a short turboprop hop from Albury, a cruisy coastal flight from Tyabb or a long haul from LAX, it doesn't matter; all that matters is you make it on time to win the bragging rights! Victoria eagerly awaits this edition of Panic Stations, with expectations of a fully staffed Melbourne (YMML) between 0700z - 1000z (5pm-9pm AEST, 4:30pm-8:30pm ACST, 3pm-7pm AWST).

    Event Details:

The aim of Panic Stations is simple; get as many aircraft flying into the destination as possible with one objective. Be the first person to arrive into Melbourne at or after one of the arrival times, for your chance to score bragging rights!

Note: pilots must depart from an aerodrome more than 30 Nautical miles from Melbourne to be eligible to win the panic station award.

This edition we have two touchdown times! 0900z and 1000z.

We recommend bringing some extra holding fuel as controllers will be busy trying to accommodate the influx of pilots whilst trying to maintain separation standards.

    Prizes:

VATPAC is providing awards for Panic Stations Melbourne in order to increase participation and enjoyment during the event!

For Pilots: Two $10 Euro SimMarket Vouchers will be on offer. To win an award, you must be the aircraft to arrive (touch down) at or just after the target arrival time. Each touchdown time has one prize that will be awarded.

For Controllers: Every controller who controls for one whole hour will go into the draw to win one $10 Euro SimMarket Voucher.

Rules for each of these awards will be released in the days prior to the event.

    Routes:

We recommend using the following routes when arriving into Melbourne from different locations around Australia. These are only a handful of the possible departure points so feel free to depart from any airfield you like.
