  1. John,

Roland suggested to me once that we should be co-ordinating air traffic rather than controlling. I tend to agree, and admit that there maybe only subtle differences. I think the term provides a better indication of our activities.

Bit like the traffic cop doing point duty, he is co-ordinating their movements, not actually controlling their actions.

Also goes more toward the fact we don't order pilots to use runways, flightpaths, etc, but we co-ordinate or coreograph.

  2. Hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I realise there are several comments regarding this but seem a little dated and in the IT game one day is a long time.

I am going to purchase a new computer, and I'd like to have it optimised for FS9 and ASRC.

I recall reading somewhere (wish I knew where) that some video cards conflict with some of our FS software. Are there any cards which I should steer clear of and what would be the best.

I note that in a previous thread it is possible to set up ATC and FS on different channels (Headset v ext speakers).

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

  3. Alex,

You're a guru mate. After you posted the above message I remembered that I had also updated Zone Alarm.

So I quit the program and almost as soon as it closed the session appeared.

It is strange because I had turned off the firewall in Zone Alarm anyway, but it must still block it somehow.

Thank-you so much, I can once again fly the skys.

Thank-you also to Nick and Dominic.

  4. Dominic,

I have gone through the setings on my Belkin Router. I have Port 6073 forwarded to my computer for use by FS.

It has no mention anywhere about the "dpnsvr"???

I have rebotted my computer several times, tryed hosting then joining, and starting SBRelay, FS and SB in different orders, but still can't find a session.

I hope very much that this isn't the end of my online flying.

You have me concerned now re the virus. I have never asked the question but you have now raised a suspicion in my mind about some of these newer programs. Does VATPAC/VATSIM know the authors. I don't know them, and I apologise if anyone gets upset by me asking.

  5. Hi guys,

I have always been thankful reading these forums that I have never had such problems. THEN IT HAPPENS.

I have not had a problem connecting for the last twelve months, then yesterday my FS9 failed to locate a session. I have tryed both Nick and Normans suggestions over and over and over, even put on the black rob etc.

Last night I gave up, and thought oh well maybe tomorrow it will just start working again just a quickly as it had stopped working. It was not to be. I have now been trying all afternoon using different methods, but cannot locate a session.

I do not recall making any changes other than placing an extra acft into the acft folder between the thing working and it not working. I just upgraded to SBRelay 1.2 in the hope that it might help too.

Any suggestions other than those already mentioned. If not I may have to spend the rest of my life on ATC.

  6. Thanks David, John and Roland for the information. I have the NAP printed out for BN and try to use them as appropriate.

Sorry for dragging this on but I'd like to learn as much as possible. So would it be fair to say that BN-S_CTR would provide the metar, with xw, when issuing the App and RWY to an inbd acft? (Obviously with prior consultation with APP & TWR).

  7. Jackson,

Thankyou very much for the reply. Most comprehensive and helpful.

So I can assign RWY 14 to the acft and it is up to the pilot to tell me whether he can utilise that rwy safely.

Visversa I can still assign RWY 19 and if the pilot knows that the XWind is too great he can divert or ask for alt RWY.

    Sounds good to me.

Still a STU, and always will be!

  8. Gentlemen,

How do I determine capabilities of particular rwys at Airports?

I have been scouring the Terminal Information at AirServices, and am slowly translating the information.

    An example of the particular scenario I have is today at YBBN. The ATIS is WND: 120/12. MAX XW 14KTS RWY19. There are two problems I guess;

    1. Who and when does an acft decide that it XW limits are reached, including tail winds

    2. How can I tell if RWY14 is suitable for particular acft?

I have the following info from AirService

    01/19 016 114a PCN 97/F/D/1750(254 PSI)/T Grooved (1) RWY WID 45

    14/32 135 56a PCN 15/F/A/1000(145PSI)/T (4) RWY WID 30

plus associated notes. RWY 14 has only a VOR/DME app.

Any suggestions or directions to the appropriate references would be appreciated. I 'm trying to get it all as close to realistic as possible. The Note 1 in the NAP indicates a max of 10kts tailwind.

  9. Then again, there are those of us that enjoy flying military transports for the AvDF. Not a lot of ILS gear set up on remote strips, and makes it more enjoyable doing the non-button pushing mode. Some real enjoyable flying.

  10. Ben,

I wish that was the option sometimes. (Have a look and go to bed) Not in the air, but on the water I had to do a search for a lost frenchman on a yacht whilst gusting high 60's, recently. Nice ground turbulence of a different sort was being experienced.

Of interest the Rescue Helo said they would prefer not to fly, but if we went in the water they would come looking. Nice of them, hey. Then again vis was down to 100m at times.

  11. Guys,

I had weatherset2 installed and running, but I have accidently deleted the folder it was in.

I cannot remember where it came from, other than it was included in another download.

Can anyone help me out, by pointing me in the right diretion please.

    Sean H

  12. John,

Thanks for the info, I both learnt something and had myself vindicated. I was once at the gate with some other acft and heard the TWR telling us all to squawk mode C. I sent a private and suggested that he didn't need us all on mode C, but was politely told to stick with flying. Hey, I'm new to the game so I butted out. Good to see we have it from the horses mouth, and I agree it does make it more realistic from my point of view.

Didn't know about that Shift F6. Handy tool.

I have also been switching my radar, between Gnd and the other one on ASRC when doing TWR. Probably not the right thing to do though.

  13. Minor report, but I have been booted by the server three times in the last three days, twice by the SB server and once by the AVC server.

Didn't read the post about the outage above, so that may have been the problem.

Just thought I'd let you know as it may help. Last time was at about 0110 UTC today. 1110 AEST.

  14. Sirs,

I have it happen on almost every flight especially crossing state borders. I thought that it was something to do with Daylight saving or something else like that........

It is very annoying, I agree. Don't know how to fix it sorry.

  15. Hi all,

I think we had another failure this evening. The controller reported that I had dropped off, but I was still on AVC and ServInfo for several minutes. Then it appears that we all dropped off. Only a few survivors after 10minutes.

It is disheartening, but like has been said above we generally get a pretty good run out of it.

Thanks go to the ATC guys tonight, must have been seven covering almost whole of Aussie airspace.

    Sean H

  16. Thanks Roland, but i am now getting a little confused.

If there is ATC present, the concensus in this thread seems to be that you don't send/provide position reports..........

Remember the reasons for position reports, they are for ATC to be able to determine WHERE YOU ARE, and then from your estimated ground speed/time intervals, determine WHERE YOU WILL BE. If you are identified, ATC knows where you are courtesy of the radar and therefore there is no need to give position reports, unless ASKED by ATC.

If there is no ATC present, then random unofficial reports on your position should be sent. on 122.80 usually because it is only other pilots out there.

(Although if I heard TOJAM called by another pilot, and it was on my flight plan then I would be interested, IF i didn't know where TOJAM was I could go back to sleep because it wouldn't effect me???)

    Is this the short answer?

  17. Very interesting discussion,

I like Rollands' analogy to traffic law (hehe), and tht makes a lot of sense to me.

    Not wanting to weigh into a discussion with folk far more experienced than I, I would like to ask the following;

I was travelling YSSY to YBBN some time ago and reported TOJAM and was asked to refrain from reporting positions by the ATC. I was only to happy to comply being the friendly type and after all he was the Air Traffic Co-Ordinator.....

My question is on if there isn't any ATC coverage as happens many times, shouldn't every aircraft captain be reporting CPR and PR so that everyone else knows where they are. I haven't heard or seen vary often PR when no ATC is around.

So what is suppose to occur, No ATC then all CPR and PR to be notified???

  18. Hi all,

Does anyone have a round the world program with details on various legs. A mate flys with XXXX and they have one, but I don't want to leave good old VATSIM. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears. If not I might just do an impromptu round the world flight making it up as I go. NB I'm not looking to do it in a short time frame, more like a leg a week or something.

Not sure which airframe I'll use yet......

  19. Hi all, This may already have been mentioned/discussed but I haven't been able to locate it.

As we know the designated freq for BN TWR is 120.5 which is the same for SY TWR 16R/34L 07/25. I have noticed when using ASRC that when I am BN_V_TWR and I set my primary freq as BN TWR 120.5 that the key I have programmed for SY TWR also becomes live. I then have both set as primary. I don't "think" this is actually doing anything in relation to me tx on SY TWR but it is unnerving and places doubt in my mind.

Do you ever have two SY TWR in ops like real world? EG both 124.7 and 120.5.

I have never seen the 124.7 freq used or two TWRs operating, but that is to say it doesn't happen.

Can Sy TWR use 124.7 instead of 120.5 as its usual freq??

  20. Hi,

Good discussion. A friend flys with IVAO (Can't convert him over) and they have apparently changed from RW to TeamSpeak for all ATC voice coms.

The AvDF have trialled this program on a number of occasions as an OPS UHF channel between acft. The clarity is amazing and I can't believe the difference. The biggest problem we had was the conflicts when running both RW and TS, many sounds cards couldn't cope. But if running TS by itself it was a vast improvement over RW.

With the apparent probs (i've been having with RW) in last week, it would be good to see an alternative. Even when RW is going well, I would still vote TS as number one.

    Sean H

PS After having said this, not sure whether SB and TS are compatible. So the right click may not function, but I guess this could be researched.

  21. John,

I downloaded that file from vUSN site pre the last AvDF Exercise and was going to use it. The txt seems to suggest what you are saying and therefor would be of great benefit. I asked some of the guys at AvDF about it, but no-one was using it, so I got cold feet and never installed.

If anyone has used it, does it interfere with anything else?? IE compatibility issues.

    Sean H

  22. Jackson,

Fully agree, and will ensure I follow that order in sequence. I should have read the previous msg fully instead of skimming (bad habit) and I fully agree with previous comments. I have personally experienced attempting to maintain txt coms whilst helo flying and it is nigh on impossible.

I would think (as a junior STU) that if i provided a clearance to a certain point and then lost coms, that the clearance would still stand unless coms were re-established. So if i had granted clearance to land and then lost coms i would then divert other acft until either re-established coms with the acft or he had landed. It is easier for an ATC to change flt paths of acft he can com with than one he can't. If I have that wrong pls let me know.

  23. Gentlemen,

Not sure whether it is my settings, but for the last two or so days if I use RW1.vatpac.org channel I cannot connect the VSCS for my position or any other in ASRC. Yet if I use other servers it works fine. This may be the cause of recent shift away from RW1 by ATC's using ASRC. I prefer to utilise the full capabilities of ASRC, so need a channel which will allow me to connect the VSCS components. Otherwise makes monitoring other local ATC positions harder.
