This Weeks Flight on 2nd December 2020 finds us in Japan. The main reason for this flight is to continue an introduction to some of the new MSFS2020 scenery for Japan. This flight will be a scenic tour from Iwakuni (RJOI) to Kobe (RJBE) with all waypoints being points of interest within the MSFS2020 program. The flight should be acceptably scenic in all simulators.
Scenery Suggested:
MSFS2020  Himeji Castle    This castle is well presented in default MS2020 but this addon has some visual improvements.
Most flights in X-plane 11 will also benefit from improved mesh which can be obtained from https://www.alpilotx.net/ There is HD and UHD available depending on region. Just check each download page and locate the relevant tile/co-ordinate, download and install as usual. Ensure that the mesh folder is placed in the correct order at bottom of Scenery_packs.ini file.
At point of interest Itsukushima Shrine it is suggested to fly in from the West at 200' to see this shrine which is situated in the water off the flight plan waypoint.
Aircraft Suggested: Any capable of 140-160 kias
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC
Flight Details: RJOI-RJBE
Weather: Real time weather, fair weather if conditions are not suitable.

Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

Event Details
A Christmas Day event for those that may have no family commitments (for those forced to isolate ;). This event departs from Indonesian airport Husein Sastranegara-Bandung Airport and flies south west over the ocean below oceanic controlled airspace to Christmas Island Australia. Since the majority of the flight is over water and lacks any visual references, pilots will be required use instrument navigation to complete the flight.
Modern GPS is discouraged for this flight and as such no flightplan will be provided. Instead pilots are encouraged to navigate "old school" making use of modest radio navigation. As such, older classic twin engine aircraft are a good choice for use on this flight.
Simulation Date/Time : Current date set to daylight.
Weather : Real World weather as the flight is easily undertaken in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) as IFR.
Distance : 240 nm
Est Flight Time : approx 75 mins
Aircraft : Twin engine aircraft of 'yester-year' such as Douglas DC-3, Aerocommander AC-56 or similar capable of 160 to 190 kias.
Altitude : Initially 9000ft to clear terrain but can cruise an altitude at pilot's discretion based on the performance of the aircraft being flown and accompanying traffic.
Flightplan
File as : WICC DCT YPXM (can be either VFR or IFR)
GPS Flightplan is NOT available for this particular flight, however for new pilots looking for a "leg up", one can be easily created within their respective simulators.
Navigation : Pilots are encouraged to utilise onboard radio navigation, preferably VOR and DME, however pilots wishing to truly challenge themselves might opt to fly using ADF to track via NDBs. Both the departure and arrival airports are equipped with long range VOR/DME so pilots will be able to reference at least one of these during all phases of the flight. Those taking the NDB challenge will need to dead reacon the latter phase since Christmas Island is not equipped with an NDB. If they are lucky it might be possible to source a VHF transmitter instead.
Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio coms at uncontrolled airfields. This flight will also assume similar operation within Indonesia and adopt the tower frequency as the CTAF when they are uncontrolled.

Pilots are encouraged to tune, monitor and broadcast their positions at various milestones using unicom 122.80 (which is coincidentally Christmas Island CTAF). Recommended milestones include; establishing outbound radial Bandung VOR/DME (BND) 117.0 - Provide [Radial][DME][Altitude passing and intended altitude (9000)][tracking radial "outbound"][indicated airspeed] establishing or leaving an altitude - (same as above without passing altitude) reaching 150, 120, 90, 60 DME values inbound XMX VOR/DME - (same as above now referencing inbound radial XMX. For the 90 and 60 DME calls, if the DME instrument provides an estimate then include the time estimate to arrive over YPXM as the final part of the broadcast) announce position and intended approach around 30 DME. eg [Position] + Join Circuit for Visual Approach, if inclement weather then announce the intended Instrument Approach. report reaching various points in the approach. ie circuit legs, or for instrument approach the "Initial Point", "Outbound leg", "final approach" etc... Track SW to intercept any outbound radial in the range of 205° to 215° BND (117.0) and climb to not below 9,000 ft, the lowest safe altitude as indicated in the accompanying chart. Track the chosen radial until clear of terrain. A 40 DME range will place the aircraft at or near water allowing the aircraft to adopt a lower cruise altitude if so preferred. Keep monitoring for receipt of Christmas Island (XMX) VOR/DME 112.40. Once XMX Christmas Island VOR/DME is reliably received, track the inbound radial directly to the VOR/DME CHRISTMAS ISLAND [YPXM] - Land
