What is Pacific Island Link?
Pacific Island Link is a monthly event in which we explore the pacific islands within VATPAC and occasionally within our neighboring divisions. Each month you can expect to fly routes across Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia and many other islands across Oceania. This event for the most part will fall on the first Saturday of each month from 0800z - 1100z and you can expect flight times any where from 1.5 hours to 3 hours.

This Week (03/08/2019) from 0800z - 1000z:
Explore the beautiful islands of the south pacific in this short hop from Vanuatu to New Caledonia. In this flight we will be traveling form Bauerfield Int'l (Port Vila) to La Tontouta Int'l (Noumea).

The Route:
NVVV - NWWW
DCT VLI B590 LTO DCT

Aircraft Type:
The recommended aircraft type for this route is DH8D/AT72 up to B738/A320 or equivalent.

This event begins 08/05/19 and repeats every week on Monday until 08/19/19

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

Backed by popular demand, the Events Department invite you to a spinoff of the popular acclaimed VATPAC Panic Stations Event, this time, it's Trans-Continental! Whether you like flying a B717, B737 or even DH8Ds, this event is for you!
Depart Alice Springs Airport (YBAS,) Melbourne International Airport (YMML,) or Sydney International Airport (YSSY) bound for Perth International Airport (YPPH) with the expectation of full ATC services for 7 Hours from 0300z - 1000z.

Event Details:
Panic Stations is a simple, yet quite challenging event. Get as many aircraft flying to the destination airport as possible, with only one objective. Arrive at or after the target time to enjoy bragging rights... Well, until the next panic stations event that is!
VATPAC is putting a spin on the traditional Panic Stations Event - Instead of only providing ATC Services for the arrival airfields, VATPAC is providing services for Alice Springs Airport (YBAS,) Melbourne International Airport (YMML,) or Sydney International Airport (YSSY) as possible departure points. Additionally, we are going Transcontinental! Depart in the east, enjoy the slow sun setting as you wiz your way towards the West coast along with a large number of other pilots, all with the same goal as you! Pilots can expect full ATC Services from 0300z - 1000z at all 4 Airfields, and expect full ENR Coverage across the continent!
This time, we have two different titles for people to win, these being;
JET & NON-JET Winner (From either YBAS/YMML/YSSY) JET/NON-JET Winner (Anywhere other than the departure points.) This has been done in order to create more of a challenge, we invite pilots to fly from Flukeys FIFO airports and WA Airport packs to take out the second title.
Touch Down Time for this event is 0900z
However, expect heavy delays as we try and accommodate everyone whilst maintaining separation standards! We look forward to seeing you all there!

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
