Use of Non Standard ATC Positions

Over the recent weeks/months, there has been an observed steady increase in the opening of non-standard positions online (for example, Sydney Director? Melbourne Radar? Departures? Both SY East and West Towers.)

I?d like to take this opportunity to provide a friendly reminder that these positions are special use positions and are only typically to be opened under certain circumstances (e.g. during events).

It?s really important that standard positions are fully staffed before considering non-standard ones for a number of reasons including:

? Ensuring that online operations remain as consistent and predictable as possible for pilots from night to night;

? Maximizing the geographical availability of ATC by spreading out and covering the most traffic possible rather than condensing on one small area.

? Such positions frequently carry specialized procedures to be used.

Non-standard positions are primarily used to more efficiently share traffic loads in high density/busy environments. This typically only occurs during events when such positions are often planned. If you believe that there may be a need for an unscheduled non-standard position, please ensure you coordinate with any staff, (including mentors or instructors) and any adjacent ATC prior to opening the position.
