Recent Teamspeak behaviour

Over the last few weeks the number of complaints received regarding inappropriate Teamspeak behaviour has again spiked.

Once again, it's the younger members of our community who are having difficulty abiding by the rules. Some of the behaviour was serious enough that several members are currently enjoying holidays of varying lengths either from our Teamspeak server, the VATSIM network, or both.

Additionally, it seems to have become commonplace (even more so during the school holidays) to log on to the VATPAC Teamspeak server, set the connection to mute, and stay like that sometimes for many hours at a time. Some even leave their connection unattended and can't be contacted via chat or poke. Looking at the server logs, the number of network hours being wasted is truly staggering.

Whilst we have crystal clear, robust procedures for dealing with behavioural issues, policy regarding wastage of bandwidth may not be as clear.

Whilst we at VATPAC manage our Teamspeak server, it is still part of the VATSIM network. Therefore, in addition to local policy and rules, it is also subject to the VATSIM Code of Conduct. The VATSIM network exists mostly due to the amazing generosity of ISP's around the world who donate the bandwidth that we all use to fly, control, observe, train, chat.....basically everything that allows YOU to enjoy online aviation simulation. The VATSIM Board of Governors have undertaken to use this bandwidth for productive purposes. In no way can sitting idle on Teamspeak for hours be justified as a productive purpose.

In an effort to send a clear message to those who sit idle on Teamspeak:

  • The maximum time you are allowed to sit idle before you are automatically removed from the server is being drastically reduced
  • Idle times from the server logs will continue to be closely monitored until such time as our bandwidth donors' generosity is given the respect it deserves
