Communications Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients. Communications Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. FSCopilot/FSInn VATSIM pilots connecting to the network using FSCOPILOT/FSINN can install an additional file that provides the ability to tune the CTAF frequency and make voice announcements to other pilots on frequency. These files can be obtained via this link. Swift Swift is a recent VATSIM Pilot Client alternative now released to the public as a beta release candidate. This pilot client is a one fits all alternative and will work with FSX, P3D V3/V4 and XPlane in either 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Windows, Mac and Linux. This client, once installed and configured (not for the faint of heart - some guidance can be found in this video tutorial for those with X-Plane on Windows x64), also provides a capability for pilots to designate a private voice channel to allow communication with other pilots in the same voice channel. However, to do this requires a frequency over ride to be set allowing the client to ignore the set frequency instead providing text entry into a text box. Into this box the name of the voice room needs to be entered to enable voice communication. A voice room is typically in the form of "some.server.org/<Airport ICAO>". The server component is ALWAYS "rw1.vatpac.org". So this week's departure would use "rw1.vatpac.org/<Airport ICAO>". For airports without an airport ICAO it is typical to use VATPAC VFR Virtual voice room acccessed using 131.25 in FSINN. The equivalent for SWIFT is "rw1.vatpac.org/virtualvfr". Communications : Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. VATSIM pilots connecting to the network using FSCOPILOT/FSINN can install an additional file that provides the ability to tune the CTAF frequency and make voice announcements to other pilots on frequency. These files can be obtained via this link. For pilots connecting to VATSIM using VPilot, there is a work around that enables these pilots to also take advantage of online voice CTAF. Refer to this informative VATPAC Forum post to learn how to implement the work around. Altitude : Remain below Sydney CTA steps Flightplan File as : YBTH OBERON BERRIMA.FM YMIG YWIO YWBN TWRN YSBK GPS Flightplan is available for FSX and X-Plane FMS and also provided is the original Plan-G flightplan for those that find this useful all enclosed within a Zip archive. Navigation : Pilots familiar with the area can navigate visually, for those less familiar the accompanying GPS Flightplan is the recommended method of navigating the flight plan. BANKSTOWN PROCEDURES Bankstown is a general aviation class D aerodrome and is located in close proximity to Sydney International Airport and RAAF Airbase Richmond. An excellent source of information for Bankstown VFR operations inbound and outbound can be found in CASA's "Ontrack" Online Reference Resource. Pilots unfamiliar with Bankstown Operations are encouraged to visit the site and review available information prior to operating within Bankstown airspace. It's Spilled Milk Run Monday, and based on the ruminations in This Thread: It's time to brush up on our Helicopter Operations around Sydney. Pilots see the Sydney ERSA (https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/current/ersa/FAC_YSSY_16AUG2018.pdf ) especially from Pages 11 to 19 inclusive. Or Bankstown ERSA https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/current/ersa/FAC_YSBK_16AUG2018.pdf pages 4 through 7 inclusive. If you absolutely cannot fly a Helicopter, then see if you can get a small prop aircraft into the Sydney Approach airspace. Suggested activities include: Sydney Harbour Scenic flights, at 1500ft (inside controlled airspace, VFR) Fly a practice ILS approach at Sydney Airport (IFR clearance required, even in a Cessna) - perhaps with an IFR departure from Bankstown in a piston single! or pick up IFR in the air! ATC (And pilot) instructions at https://operations.vatpac.org/documents/li/Sydney Area Local Instructions.pdf VTC available at https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/current/aipchart/vtc/Sydney_VTC_24MAY2018.pdf Routes: Familiarise yourself with pages 18, 25, 27, 28 of https://operations.vatpac.org/documents/li/Sydney Area Local Instructions.pdf Why not try the Barracks 5, Maroubra 5, Cape Banks 5, Wanda 5, Georges River 5, Rosehill 5, Erskineville 5 or the Harbour Bridge 5 routes in a Helicopter? Land at Rosehill Racecourse, Transition from the Georges River 5 to Choppers South or return. Try the Wanda 5 to enter the Victor 1 northbound. Maybe the Barracks 5 on your way to Sydney Heads to transition onto the Bondi 5 southbound? Or hit Erskineville 5 for a landing at Star City Casino and Darling Harbour, or mix it with the traffic orbiting east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a close-up view of Sydney's famous Opera House. IFR ILS practice approaches at YSSY YSBK - YSSY BK DCT SY DCT BK (Remember to ensure your DG heading is aligned for potential vectors) Sydney Scenic flight from Bankstown YSBK - YSBK BK PRT HSY STI LRF HBB LRF HSY PSP BK (Ensure you get clearance to enter the Sydney TMA prior to proceeding south of Long Reef toward Harbour Bridge) Harbour Scenic One: Long Reef - Harbour Bridge - North Head - Long Reef Harbour Scenic Two: Long Reef - Chatswood - Manly Beach - Long Reef Fixed Based WorldFlight sims We will endeavour to have ML-WOL_CTR open for some runs between YSCB (or other nearby CTAF's such as Wagga, Albury or Newcastle) and YSSY. Remember, you can always go around. For the adventurous, why not try a touch and go at YSBK?
