Communications Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF. Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment. Welcome to the first Major Event of the year! Join us on the 18th of February between Darwin and Cairns from 0630z to 1030z. Event Details: A City Pair event is where ATC Services is provided between two aerodromes for pilots to fly between. We invite you to fly between Darwin (YPDN) and Cairns (YBCS) from 0630z to 1030z as we attempt to test out our talented controlling team! Routes: We recommend using the following routes which are suitable for a jet such as an Airbus A320, Boeing 737, regional jet or business jet. Applications will remain open until three days before the event (15FEB23), after which the roster will be released and available for viewing. Please keep in mind that slot availability will be dependent on the number of applications. Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the Standard positions are filled. Please see a member of Staff or a C3 rated controller to be granted permission to open a non-standard position. Please review the controller NOTAM for detailed information about which Non-Standard Positions are automatically authorized. Communications : Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients. CAIRNS PROCEDURES Cairns is a class C civil aerodrome. Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Cairns. Cairns receives several RPT, charter and GA flights every day from a variety of major and regional cities within Australia and select international destinations. With fantastic scenery by ORBX, it's the perfect location for both GA and Jet traffic so make sure our controllers are working hard. The following positions will be the primary positions: CS_TWR CS_APP BN-TBP_CTR To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Cairns prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon! What is Iron Mic? Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds which recognizes a position with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic. Iron Mic runs from 0000Z on Monday (1000 AEST) to 2359Z Sunday (0959 Monday AEST). How do we know about our progress? Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week. Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Cairns positions. You can do this on Facebook, Discord or the forums. We have setup a special Iron Mic Coordination text channel on Discord to make it easier to coordinate coverage with your fellow controllers. VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100 If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good Luck VATPAC!
