  1. Hey all, I've been flying VFR flights fairly regularly to get my experience up, some with a little ATC, but mainly not (CTAF and UNICOM OPS). Monday night was the first real full ATC VFR flight from YSCB to YGLB. What an awesome experience! Thanks for the ATC services from ML-BIK_CTR and ML-SNO_CTR, you guys made all the difference!

  2. G'day. I spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos of VATSIM flights. The guys like our own Trent and others really help in learning ATC procedures and flying in general. So, I want to give it a try. I'm using X-Plane on an iMac with a USB headset. I've watched a few videos and OBS seems like a popular free option and sometimes with Audacity to record voice but OBS can do both. So, those who do some videos, how do you do it?

  3. Ok, for anyone else interested in this topic, I bought the USB Kraken headset today from DickSmith. The headset is very comfortable and the digital microphone fits comfortably around the face. I also bought an extended keyboard from the Apple Store for the iMac so that I'd have the numeric keypad for camera presets. I didn't realise the keyboard has two USB ports but a radio check with the headset plugged into the keyboard only got a readability of 4 from CTR. So I plugged the headset straight into the iMac for a readability of 5. I flew my first circuits tonight at YSCB in an Airfoil Labs C172 using a headset! Thanks Ben for being so helpful when I was clearly very nervous. Next time will be a lot better.

I'm, happy to answer any questions about the headset if anyone is interested.

    Cheers,

    Roman

  4. Greetings all,

I'm still a newbie flying circuits in a 172. I've quickly realised that ATC via text is not good particularly during critical stages of flight (thanks again to those Controllers who have assisted so far). So, I'm on the search for a good headset. I'm using an iMac which eliminates many PC models that need two jacks. I think I need a USB type which should also work in my Saitek yoke which has a USB hub built in. I'm looking at the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma which has the USB plug and mic and is rated for iMac, although it's a little expensive.

I'm real keen to hear any recommendations because I'd like to buy in a couple of days.

    Cheers,

    Roman

  5. Hi Greg. I Googled how to send a private message as soon as I exited onto the taxiway after landing but I'm not sure if I was successful because the words of the CTR callsign are separated by a space and my attempts seemed to sent only to ML-SNO. I am not convinced the controller heard anything from me so I can understand his / her concern.

I can't be sure now what I finally decided about the frequency; I printed the real Aerodrome Chart and was originally looking for a Clearance Delivery frequency which isn't listed but 121.7 is listed for SMC. Later in the day when I flew again (after the guidance received by text earlier) I chose 118.7 which is the listed CTAF and I used the keyboard for broadcasts (which I guess no one saw anyway?). I now understand the gap procedure and the need to use their frequencies by clicking Who is Online.

I am using xSquawkBox with X-Plane V10. I'm learning a lot in quick time. I hope I'm not being a bother.

I'm logging on soon to hopefully monitor the Milkrun ATC. I'm still on keyboard so I think it best to stay off VATSIM while flying until I get a headset and more experience. I'll sit in the GA parking and listen. I'm using an iMac so I think I need to be careful about what I buy because I'm not sure yet if the headphone jack is also suitable for a headset with microphone.

    Thanks again for the guidance.

    Regards,

    Roman

  6. Hello David,

Thank you for such a prompt reply. I'm very much feeling my way so I hope I haven't made too much of a mistake. The typing you see in my attachment was my first communication on VATSIM, and I obviously used my keyboard while flying the circuit which added to the tension of the moment, I was relieved when I saw that pressing the Enter key opened the text dialogue box! I can see I'll need to buy a headset in the coming days.

Thanks for the advice regarding gaps coverage, I'll certainly do that in future. I actually flew a few more circuits today and I used the keyboard to send CTAF advisories, I figured it was the best I could do to demonstrate that I'm trying to do the right thing :)

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.

  7. Thanks Trent, I'll log on tomorrow night and get some exposure. By the way, I was flying some circuits today at Canberra in a C172 and just before turning base I received the attached text. What are the procedures for flying local circuits not above 1000 when there is no ATC?

  8. Hi All,

I use to fly years ago and am setting up X-Plane to refresh my skills starting with flying circuits in Canberra. I've got the Saitek Yoke and Throttle quadrant and rudders. I've just installed the xSquawkbox plugin and listened to some ATC chat from Melbourne. So, I guess Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne get most of the traffic but is there much activity in Canberra? Is it possible to get or organise ATC services for circuits in Canberra from ATC elsewhere? When are the peak ATC times? I've seen several of Musicalaviators YouTube vids and it seems the Milkrun is the regular weekly get together?

    Thank guys,

    Roman
