  1. Update:
As a last resort, I decided to plug the yoke into my 64 bit Windows 10 laptop.
    Guess what - it worked.
The laptop was showing the Logitech drivers as being 32 bit.
So I decided to download the 32 bit drivers instead. Now the problem is that when I try to run installation, my tower pc won't allow it and asks for the 64 bit version.

  2. Hi Folks.
I've just rejoined after a long hiatus playing combat flight sims and found that my old Saitek yoke system (+ throttle quadrant) doesn't work anymore.
My Windows 10 pc sees the unit in device manager, but fails to install the required drivers.
Trawling the 'net, it seems that a Windows 10 patch in 2018 effectively bricked the unit.
I have a ticket in with Logitech (who now own the brand), but wondered if any of you had the same problem and fixed it?
I am strongly contemplating MSFS 2020 later this month and could use my TM Warthog & Saitek pedals, but would prefer the yoke.
Apologies if this subject has been mentioned before.

  3. I'm a bit stuck on this subject. I've looked at the different classes of airspace in Australia both from this site and Wiki-ed.

For a pilot to leave and enter different classes of airspace, is it required of the pilot to ask ATC permission or would that be initiated by ATC?

Also, as a casual 'simmer (of prop a/c on non-jet routes) how are the areas defined and where can I obtain charts relevant to this subject. Would it be shown on the GPS, for instance?

As an example, if I filed a plan from Sydney to Canberra at low altitude non-jet routes, where would I find the relevant sections of airspace to use for that trip and how and when would I be in contact with ATC regarding transitions to and from different classes of airspace?

Apologies in advance if this subject has been covered before.

  4. Everytime I go to a different private room frequency provided by the Vatpac downloaded add-on list (CTAFS/MBZ etc.), the action disconnects me from the Vatpac server.

I realize that using SB4 with this list Vatpac provided is not guaranteed as stable. Therefore, does anyone know where I can download SB3 in the hope that this version will solve my problem.

(I'm running FSX with windows 7 home premium, by the way.)

  5. Thanks, Greg. From what I can see, autorudder only seems to work in FSX when you are actualy in flight. It appears not to work when taxiing (well not for me anyway :o ). I've now had a bit of time to use the controller programming software that came with the unit (although it's not that intuative) and have managed to set up the standard key commands for right and left rudder on to the X-axis.....it works (sort off) but because there is no command for centering the rudder in FSX, this does not work consistantly for taxiing.

So if you guys see me all over the place when taxiing a Mooney Bravo, try not to laugh too much.

  6. I've just purchased a brand new Saitek yoke & throttle quadrant combo and am running it with FSX. My problem is that although everything is working perfectly, since I don't have rudder pedals, I'd like to combine the rudder with aileron control on the X axis.

I can find no obvious way to do this. No doubt this is a repeated user request...if so, my apologies in advance.

  7. I filed a flight today from Sydney to Coffs. I managed to pretty much managed to get it right with SYD_TWR and MEL_BIK.

So since I was in un-controlled airspace, I should have switched to YCFS once in range and transmitted on 118.20 on voice and text instead of staying on 122.80 as I did?

  8. I've just read and tried to digest (again) the procedures as outlined in VATPAC publications 'SB3 Add-on List' and 'Regional Airport Ops.'

Am I correct in assuming that:

    1. No ATC present in Flight Region. Use 122.80 on text(only) for manditory broadcasts?

    2. Departing non controlled regional airport when Ctr is controlled. Tune Com to Ctr feq and advise of departure?

    3. Arriving controlled Ctr airspace inbound for regional non controlled airport. Tune to Ctr freq and advise of FL, position and destination?

This is where I get a bit confused.

Am I required to switch to the MBZ or CTAF freq on voice when no ATC is present in the FR and when within the required range of the arriving/departing airport? Must I also text as well?

I am presuming that I select the relevant regional airport in SB3 and on my aircraft Com.

Or do I just stay with 122.80?

If so when do I make use of the MBZ and CTAF rooms?

  9. Roland, trying all three international menu settings produced no change in the Mooney altimeter sub-scale. It read inches Hg whichever setting was chosen.

However, Daniel, the link you provided was just the ticket....and now I have a printout to help me out.

    Thanks everyone for input.

  10. I'm having a bit of trouble understanding this concept as a pilot.

I realize that it's an integral part of a METAR.

I understand that the standard pressure setting of 1013.25hPa translates to 29.92 in the altimeter setting in my Mooney Bravo a/c in FS9.

When ATC gives a different value from the standard hPa above, how can I translate this into the Mooney altimeter setting?

I suspected that I'd be able to change altimeter scale to QNH instead of 'inches Hg'. But I can't find any way to do this in FS9 settings.

This part of ATC instructions has had me foxed on a number of occasions...and as usual I've tried to bluff my way out of my ignorance.

    :o

  11. This was the response:

    Hi Graham,

Your enquiry has been passed on to us from the Library.

In order for the index pages to function correctly, you need to be viewing the PDF file within a web browser, as shown in the attached screen print (aip.jpg). This is because the index page contains links to other PDF files which are in the same directory on the web site. If the index page opens within Acrobat itself, the additional files cannot be found.

I have listed below 2 options which should enable the PDF's to be viewed in the browser for you. I suggest checking the first option and then trying the index page on the site again before trying the second option.

    -------------------

Check the Display PDF In Browser preference.

    In Adobe Acrobat

    1. Choose Edit > Preferences.

    2. Select Internet.

    3. Check if "Display PDF in Browser" is selected (ticked). If it is already ticked, skip to step 5

    4. If it is not selected, select it and Click on OK. Close Adobe Acrobat and check the AIP via the website.

    5. Deselect "Display PDF In Browser", and then click OK.

    6. Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet, select Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK. Close Adobe Acrobat and check the AIP via the website

    -------------------------

Make sure that AdobePDF.dll is enabled.

    In Internet Explorer:

    1. Select Tools > Internet Options > Programs (tab) > Manage Add-ons.

    2. Set Show to "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer."

    3. Find and select Adobe PDF Reader.

    4. Make sure Enabled is selected.

    -------------------------

If either of the options above do not fix the issue, further instructions and other possible ways of correcting this issue can be found here:

    Hope you have some success.

    regards,

    Simon

  12. I always start on the 'I agree' page. Right clicking and selecting 'open in new window' has the same effect (i.e. the index downloads into my temp files folder on the computer and automaticaly opens up Adobe Reader 9.0)

I have no problems accessing other pdf's from the Airservices Australia site (e.g. ILS, aerodrome charts, SIDs & STARs).

I'll try an email to AA and see if they can shed any light on the problem.

    :(

  13. I'm having problems trying to access the AIP book online (required for external research for the tower course).

I know this is not a VATPAC caused problem, however I'm just checking to see if anybody can help me.

I have the latest versions of both Firefox (my browser of choice) and Adobe Reader. I have the Firefox plug-in for Adobe acrobat installed and enabled. I have "Display PDF in browser" active in Readers' preference.

When I access the index link for the AIP book, it downloads and opens in AR rather than in Firefox. The index is 'clickable' but when I do this all that happens is that the link becomes inactive and does not access the AIP book (which I presume it should do).

I've already spent much of the day(!) trying various settings, reading troubleshooting guides on Adobe without any success and I'm getting quite frustrated by all this. If I can't access the AIP book as required by the course, then I shall have to think about pulling out.

  14. ....fair enough. I'm amazed at the tech level I'm already experiencing, without the need to worry about the floating heavies. Just being able to fly with you guys last Teusday and chat to fellow FSimmers on Team Speak 2 blew me away.

It's a fairly sharp learning curve for an old git...in all repects, but I'm getting there.

  15. ...well, thanks for advice, help & general comments, gentlemen.

Let me re-iterate that I absolutely have no problems with ATC and the service you guys provide....apart from Arjun hassling me to try areobatics in my C172 (:P - just joking, mate!).

I guess it's all down to getting some practise in........oh, and watch out for "Diary of a Newbie - part 2". It's coming soon, to an airport near you!

  16. Has this pilot/atc training idea been trotted out before?

Ok, first a bit of personal experience first (?diary of a newbie? aside). Flight simming for me, unlike some of you other guys, is not my main hobby. I attend sporadically and often when the mood takes me. Would this be the case with the majority of VATPAC users? I don?t know.

Even after nearly 30 hours up on VATSIM of repeatedly flying between Sydney and Canberra in my C172, I still get nervous flying with ATC. I find this incredible considering during my career as a musician, I must have played to countless thousands of people from on stage and I?m certainly not the shy retiring type! Now I know that you ATC guys are the mainstay of this hobby and you all do a great job with us newbies, even so, I get frustrated by my mistakes that don?t manifest themselves when practicing alone. I am aware this is a natural phenomenon, since as a beginner, flying with ATC puts you under pressure.

So here?s my pitch. I see that there is mentoring for ATC. How about some for newbie pilots? I would love to be able to ?book? some time to fly one on one with an ATC controller somewhere in cyberspace. Firstly, I?m sure it would be a much more relaxed session. Secondly, the ATC controller would be able to give help and guidance without having the distraction of a (sometimes) busy airport or center.

The only downside, that I can see, is that it will ultimately put more workload on the mentoring program you guys already have in place. Maybe matching student pilots with student controllers could work?

How this could be technically achieved, I have no idea.

  17. ...I understand. Thanks for the help, guys.

Would there be a chance that I could get a jet SID or STAR, if I'm flying a non-jet (i.e. my trusty C172)?

Not having to practice these would ease my learning curve a fair bit...not to mention the pdf's from Airservices Australia.

  18. I've been trying to increase my knowledge in order that I may try out some non-jet SIDs & STARs. However, I'm a bit confused over procedures.

    (a) Are they picked by the pilot and included in his/her flight plan?

    or:

    (b) Allocated by ATC on initial contact?

Wikipedia goes for (b) for SIDs, however VATSIM 122c shows an example of both being included in a flight plan.
