  1. This will depend on whether a retransmit facility will be incorporate in the new system. We currently provide an area frequency, but this varies depending on the mix of controllers available and it can be difficult for pilots to determine the appropriate frequency. A retransmit facility will enable us to simply map the area frequency to the appropriate controller.

I would anticipate that we will be able to adopt "large CTAFs" once the new system is in place.

  3. VRC developer Ross Carlson has announced the release of VRC version 1.2.6.

    Quote

This fixes the version check and server list download errors when you first load a profile. It also fixes the bug where chat window positions would not be saved if you run VRC as a non-admin user.

You can download the new version from the VRC website.

  4. On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish VATPAC members and the extended flight sim community a happy new year.

We all aware of some of the ugly business that occurred some months ago and that sort of behaviour understandably resulted in many of our members losing confidence in how the organisation was being run. But despite the unnecessary drama, I can say that our team of volunteer staff have made the best they could of 2018.

    2018 in summary:

    • 17 new controllers and a total of 43 ATC ratings upgrades
    • A great program of events including GA Madness, Panic Stations, Cross the Ditch and Real Ops Sydney
    • ATC operational support for Worldflight, which was highly praised by WF teams
    • Our operations and IT teams continued to work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that our sector files and documentation were kept up-to-date and that our systems stayed online!

The board has been working on our plans for 2019 which we look forward to sharing with you in the new year. This plan will include an exciting events program for the year and a series of projects to improve the functions of the organisation.

I hope you have all had the opportunity to catch up with friends and family and enjoy the festive season. Please stay safe, take it easy on the roads and I look forward to seeing you all online in 2019.

  5. The corollary of all this, for pilots, is that there is an expectation that you will be ready or close to being ready by the time you get to the holding point and if that is going to be a problem to let ATC know. Certainly you don't want to be the one holding up half a dozen aircraft because you forgot to load the FMC!

Late applications will not be accepted.

  7. One aspect that I think has merit is the idea that smaller, more focused/localised groups have greater motivation to promote their local area. This does not necessarily mean a vACC or similar administrative-level below the division.

  8. Comments are sought from VATPAC members on the proposed Data Handling Policy.

The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) of the European Union has had a broad impact on business and other organisations and VATSIM taken the view that it is subject to the provisions of the GDPR and accordingly developed a global policy on data handling. The BOG has required that divisions have local policies that implement the global policy.

This policy addresses the issues raised by the global policy and includes a number of additional measures such as the management of data risk and data breaches, control of access to data and reporting.

Submissions can be made in writing to director at vatpac dot org and close on 18 January 2018 at 23:59 AEDT. Following the close of comments, the policy will be put before the Board for consideration.

    Data Handling Policy (Draft)

  9. I think successive boards have always been interested in this. The difficulty has always been how you drive the cultural change to enable such a voluntary system to work.

Without pre-empting a policy direction by the ops director, I would suggest that something like this would only be successful with significant support from our controllers and that it probably would only be worth pursuing if that were the case.

  10. VATPAC is seeking the assistance of members who have significant experience in cybersafety and teen behaviour (e.g. school teachers, child psychologists, police officers).

VATPAC intends to develop a cybersafety strategy to combat bullying and other issues of the type that have been growing in our organisation and expected to be an issue in most medium-to-large online organisations in the coming years.

If you believe you may be able to assist, please get in touch with David Zhong, Acting Division Director by email: director at vatpac dot org.

  13. Great post Callum.

I would like to emphasise the community aspect, part of which is volunteering. We are built on the efforts of volunteers so if there is something that you can see could be improved or you just want to contribute, please reach out.

Part of our efforts for 2019 will be making it easier for more people to contribute a small amount. Historically the organisation has been indebted to individuals who have put hundreds of hours into making the place better. One of our goals going into the new year will be to decrease the barriers for people who want to help. More on this to come...

Please have a re-read of Jackson's second post above.

VATPAC members are entitled to post in these forums (subject to the common rules of decency) even if certain people think the posts are obnoxious or annoying.

If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

  16. There is enough divisive "us vs them" in our world. This kind of thing is unnecessary between people and organisations that share common interests. Indeed we have plenty of members who are also members of IVAO.
