  1. USA FNO Downunder

The document isn't wrong. It just doesn't mention simultaneous landings and simultaneous take-offs because there is no restriction on them. The only restriction is where one aircraft is landing and the other is taking-off.
  2. USA FNO Downunder

While there are restrictions on LAHSO by night, I'm pretty sure it isn't prohibited...

Flow will be active during the event, so controllers should familiarise themselves with the following: http://www.vatpac.org/operations/documents/manuals/TermFlowCtrl.pdf In particular, read the "Flow Principles" section. I will be using the spreadsheet for this one and I'll provide the link on Friday night when I get home. If you are rostered onto an Approach or En route position and you are unsure about any of the Flow procedures, either post on here (preferred since everyone gets to see the answer) or message me and I can give you a hand.

  5. ATC Positions - Milk Run Monday

Many of you will be aware of an effort to add additional TMA positions for controllers to take advantage of on Monday evenings. This proposal resulted in a trial last year to identify potential issues. Following discussions with staff and community consultation, from Monday 14 March 2016 (Labour Day in Victoria and Eight Hours Day in Tasmania), we will be permitting controllers to operate Departures positions at Melbourne and Sydney during Milk Run events. I will be releasing new editions of documentation to cover some of the technicalities of the implementation and the related procedures. The new sector files issued by Peter last week already include the relevant diagrams and some other nifty features like new MVAs based on real world charts. All controllers should make sure that their sector files are up to date (we are on AIRAC 1603) and that they review the changes to documents later in the week (these are marked by the vertical change bars in the margins of the documents). The model that we have adopted is similar to how en route positions work. Logging onto vacant airspace, controllers will be able to choose their preferred position of APP or DEP. For example, I may decide to log onto ML DEP. Initially, I will assume the full TMA airspace. When another controller logs into ML APP, they will assume the airspace of ML APP and I will retain the DEP airspace. This is not dissimilar to a controller choosing to log onto BIK and extending coverage to SNO; when a controller logs onto SNO, the BIK controller retains BIK airspace - their preferred position. If you have any questions on this or any other matter, or would like to provide feedback, you are welcome to contact me at [email protected] David Zhong Director Operations
  6. We are currently looking for volunteers to join the operations portfolio as Operations Delegates. 7. We are currently looking for volunteers to join the Documentation Team. This is a great way to give back to our community. For the younger guys, this is also a fantastic way to improve your grasp of language and expression which will be useful in the workplace. The Documentation Team is responsible for: maintaining our current suite of ATC documents to ensure that they remain relevant identifying gaps in the suite and producing new documents to fill those gaps Often this work is performed in parallel with the AIS Team. You won't need to be a wordsmith, but a prospective Team Member should be comfortable with written English and have access to, and be familiar with the general features of, Microsoft Word 2007+. With mentoring, we will get you to become confident in writing technical English and with the use of advanced features in Word. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me at [email protected] David Zhong Director Operations

  16. NOTAM 31OCT15 - WORLDFLIGHT 2015 PROCEDURES WITHIN VATPAC ADMINISTERED AIRSPACE 1. INTRODUCTION On 1 November 2015 AEDT, the WorldFlight group will commence their annual around-the-world flight. This will commence in Sydney and will pass through Adelaide, Perth and Learmonth before leaving VATPAC-administered airspace to Jakarta. On 7 November 2015 AEDT, the WorldFlight group will re-enter VATPAC-administered airspace from Honolulu, en route to Nadi, then via Noumea and Brisbane before returning to Sydney. It is anticipated that significant traffic levels will be present along these routes. Past events have seen in excess of 200 aircraft on the first leg with the last flights departing Sydney over 2 hours after the official departure time. This NOTAM will provide pilots with information about ATC requirements with regard to air traffic management. Pilots should endeavour to comply with these requirements to minimize delays and disruption. This NOTAM cancels and replaces a previous NOTAM issued for the same effective date titled "WorldFlight 2015 Departure Legs". 2. ABBREVIATED CLEARANCES ATC may elect to issue an abbreviated clearance instead of a normal airways clearance. This is only available to pilots of jet aircraft that have planned via the routes listed in Appendix A. When abbreviated clearances are in use, pilots will be notified by ATIS: "ABBREVIATED CLEARANCES AVAILABLE FOR ELIGIBLE AIRCRAFT. AIRCRAFT IN RECEIPT OF AN ABBREVIATED CLEARANCE SHALL MAINTAIN 5000 FEET AND DEPART VIA RUNWAY 34L KATOOMBA TWO DEPARTURE OR RUNWAY 34R MARUB FIVE DEPARTURE RADAR TRANSITION" In order to reduce radio congestion, pilots of eligible aircraft shall contact airways clearance delivery and request "ABBREVIATED CLEARANCE" with the ATIS identifier. ATC will respond with one of the following: "QFA25, RUNWAY 34L, SQUAWK 2034" (if abbreviated clearance is available) or "QFA25, ABBREVIATED CLEARANCE NOT AVAILABLE, CLEARED TO ADELAIDE VIA KATOOMBA FLIGHT PLAN ROUTE..." (if abbreviated clearance is unavailable) Please note that ATC will not be actively checking flight planned routes for conformance. Pilots must not use this procedure unless they have planned via an approved route. Failure to do so will result in the clearance being invalid and may result in a loss of separation. 3. SYDNEY AIRWAYS CLEARANCE DELIVERY Two airways clearance delivery frequencies will be in use at Sydney. To balance radio traffic and workload, it is essential that pilots use the correct frequency for their parking location. Aircraft parked west of Runway 16R/34L - use 133.80 MHz Aircraft parked east of Runway 16R/34L - use 127.60 MHz 4. REPORTING "READY" Pilots should not report "ready" to the Tower controller until: (a) the aircraft is at or approaching the holding point for departure (b) the aircraft is the first aircraft at the holding point © the aircraft is configured such that the pilot can taxi the aircraft onto the runway and take-off without delay 5. AIRCRAFT CLIMB AND DESCENT SPEEDS After departure, pilots of jet aircraft are expected to utilize either a standard, NADP1 or NADP2 climb profile. In any case, upon passing 3000 FT above aerodrome level, pilots are expected to accelerate to 250 KT or minimum clean speed (which ever is higher) without delay. Pilots should notify ATC immediately if they expect to deviate significantly from a normal climb profile. On descent, pilots of jet aircraft are expected to descend at Mach 0.78 into 280 KT above 10 000 FT AMSL. Pilots must comply with Standard Terminal Area Arrival Speeds (STAAS) listed on STAR charts unless an alternative clearance is issued by ATC. Pilots must notify ATC immediately if they are unable to comply with STAAS or other speed restriction issued by ATC. 6. HOLDING FUEL During legs within VATPAC-administered airspace, ATC anticipate a maximum airborne delay of 1 hour. Pilots should carry sufficient holding fuel to absorb this delay. 7. Please join me in congratulating Peter Story on his appointment to AIS Manager. 23. Milk Run Monday - Sydney Director Trial

Following staff discussions last year and public discussions at the town hall meeting early this year, I am pleased to announce the trial of Sydney Director during Milk Run Monday. Sydney Director will operate as an additional TMA position and we have chosen not to apply any particular restrictions on its use, except that you can only use it during the approved periods. However, we would like to see people remember that Melbourne Approach sees just as much traffic as Sydney! The extended coverage rules we have set for this trial allow the use of Director even if Approach is online, however, as you will see in the attached documentation, if you log on as Director without Approach, you are effectively running the whole TMA (like Approach) - however, when Approach logs on, your airspace will reduce to just Director airspace - so this is a choice you have to make before you log on. In other words, your choice of Approach or Director will decide your "primary" position. Prior to logging in on Monday on any Sydney area position (including Tower, etc!) please have a look at the attached documentation and review the Sydney Area Local Instructions - in particular, pay attention to how the airspace changes depending on the runway configuration. You can bring up a TMA airspace diagram by going to the list of STARs and selecting one of the "(SY) SYDIR xxx" items. Note that this is only available in the TMA sector files. I will be observing the proceedings and be available on Teamspeak during the trial to get your thoughts about it. Each week I will also set up a discussion thread so that everyone can provide their feedback and comments, as well as any ideas for improvement. With a successful trial, we hope to have Sydney Director used more often, and perhaps have more TMA positions at other locations too. This trial will hopefully set up a bit of a transformation that reflects our growth over the years, so we are hoping everyone will get on board to support this, whether by getting all of the ATC positions staffed up, providing feedback or even just flying between Melbourne and Sydney! I hope to see you all there! Sydney Director Trial documentation David Zhong Director Operations
