  1. Nice one Greg.

Worth adding the route ETOs are crudely-calculated based on current ground speed and the track miles remaining - as seen by Euroscope.

    This means:

    1) you still have to beware the pilot that dumps descent profile early or drags it in a final approach speed from 20 miles

    2) no allowance is made for descent profile

    3) allowance may not be made for maneuvering or vectoring from STAR to IAF

Last minute closing when you least want it screws you up real quick. Bloody pilots. :D :teeth:

I guess the moral of the story is there is no substitute for continual scanning, and this is a nice tool to help. I usually use it to the feeder fix.

  2. Hey guys,

The cheap and cheerful 3-lever Saitek throttle quad that I use is in need of a service. This is the model that plus into the Yoke via 5-pin din.

Problem: the analogue input is very noisy / jittery. Consequently, say on final I'll have a mid-range throttle lever setting -- the output fluctuates but as much as +/-50%, which makes things 'interesting' :o

Anyone had any experience with servicing this unit?

  3. Not long now folks!

    Did you know:

The Aussie WorldFlight contingent has grown to 6 fully-crewed teams? In addition to the German, American, and two British teams, this is our biggest core group to date (10 physical simulators and teams). You can link through to their websites, see photos of the sims, videos, access this year's flight plans and shcedules from http://www.worldflightgroup.com/

    • WorldFlight Australia (B747)
    • WorldFlight Clipper (B747)
    • WorldFlight Mangrove (B737)
    • WorldFlight Australia 777 (B777)
    • WorldFlight Airbus (A330)
    • WorldFlight TAS (B737)

  4. Nice run last night.

Good job ATC - spotted and mitigated the little sequencing problem I was trying to cook up

Got my pay back trying to manage the visual turn onto R34 at ML... the oscillations were xwind-induced, I swear! Might need to repaint some rwy markings... theres a lot of rubber down there :o

  5. Hi All,

A "bump" to Stephen Coterill's announcement regarding WF ATC for departure and arrival sectors.

We particularly want to hear from you if you are interested in participating at the ATC facility at WorldFlight HQ in Sydney. There are a few usual suspects that I haven't heard from (you know who you are). Anyone who wants to express interest in joining the chaos needs to contact me in the next week or so (rhooley) at (gmail.com). Availability is limited, and due to the need to allocate positions, there will not be an opportunity to blow in at the last minute this year (there will not be a sector there for you to jump on - it will already have been allocated to someone at home.)

For personal enquiries please contact me directly rather than posting here.

Looking forward to it... it will be a big one I'm sure.

    Cheers

  6. Hi friends,

Evaluating moving across to P3D... my test case will be the PMDG -400. I've done a bit of scouting around for how-to's for installation. Many talk of 'tweaks' without specifying what they are. I see there are a number of commercial migration tools, but I'd like to understand the process myself. Any good guides around, or how have others here done it?

  7. Hi all,

Just doing a bit of tinkering with Euroscope in non-radar environments ahead of WorldFlight... Is there any known resolution yet for the Euroscope estimate drift issue? I.e. when entering estimates for ensuing waypoints, the client seems to momentarily accept it, whilst then re-calculating it later.. This is without an ADS contract active... yet to test with.

  8. Still a little bit of activity around at 1130 after a run from Moruya. Shame ATC had pulled up stumps tho - no staying power you young guns - I got stuck with Scanno (but fortunately escaped the 60 nm downwind. )

  9. Hi all,

I've been playing around with the new PA46 turboprop from Carenado and having a lot of fun with it. Great for regional hops, whilst still getting high and fast.

    Two questions:

    1) Anyone got a link to a FOM/POH? I want to read into the systems in a bit more depth - particularly the PT6A powerplant and management of

    2) Anyone figured out how to change the altimeter sub-scale from inches to millibars (or any other item in the G5000 system page?) I can't work out how to get the cursor to edit any preset in the setup page and the doco is not the best...

    Rob

  10. Wow, what a blast!

We will confirm the stats but we processed around 50 arrivals on our final leg, in just over an hour, which is on par with real life. By and large, the picture looked great from the ATC side, with no holding, and just a bit of dog-legging on arrivals sectors. There were a few issues with the parallel runways, but what's new, and it's no big deal. Nobody needs to explain themselves as everyone was doing their best... we should be thanking the go-arounds - more time spend having fun in the washing machine.

And kudos to the skydiver driver out of Wilton doing airwork around RIVET... I can tell you your callsign was taken in vain between transmissions on more than one occasion... love your work.

Keen to get our hands on any screenshots and videos - please post links or send to rhooley>at

    Cheers,

    Rob

  11. On behalf of the WorldFlight Group, a big thanks to you all for your support and participation this year.

Over the coming weeks, we will be tallying up our donations for charities and online ATC and flying hours. We expect that both will confirm that this has been a bumper year.

Judging from the feedback that has been coming in--both publicly and privately--it is very rewarding to see the level of enjoyment that this event continues to bring to the lives of members around the world. That our global community also benefits from our enjoyment through financial gifts is the icing on the cake. Great public promotion for VATSIM, and VATPAC in particular being in the spotlight for the main event.

See you in 2012 - planning has already begun.

  12. Hi All,

It's been a great week, as always, with many VATPAC members putting in big flying hours to keep the 6 sim-teams company. As I write this we are starting our final legs back through Western Australia, and the pack continues to close in on its final destination, Sydney. Traffic is already building.

A NOTAM is current for ATC arrangements today. However, I just wanted to highlight a few things:

    1. The Second last leg (YPAD-YMML) is not restricted and fair game for any ATC keen to have a go. That said, ML-MA and ML-CAN have already been booked by members from home. The entire ML TMA is still up for grabs though - enjoy the chaos.

    2. On the last leg, there will be a number of non-standard sectors, in order to increase the manpower to sequence and process the large volume of traffic between ML and SY. There will be at least 11 frequency changes between getting clearance at ML and shutting down at SY to prevent frequency congestion.

    3. Whilst anything could happen depending on the final traffic picture, general holding of aircraft is not our preferred strategy. We still recommend loading up an extra 60 mins 'captain's fuel'.

    4. If you are keen to jump on to a position that is NOTAM-restricted, we will still try and accommodate you - we'd just ask that you logon as OBS first and chat to the ATC around.

    5. Enjoy the show! Take heaps of pictures and videos!

    Thanks for your support,

    Rob

    WorldFlight ATC Coordinator

  13. Chatting about it this morning around the BBQ...

    Brisbane (single runway ops):

    VMC/VSA // 2 min sequence // ~28 arrivals per hour

    IMC/ILS // 3 min sequence // ~18 arrivals per hour

Given the preference for ILS, our 67 aircraft should take over 3 hours to process. We did it in 2. Kinda puts it in perspective.

Still want to do better though and more people come every year. The options are basically:

    1. Go long haul on the first leg (to give more time to sequence ~6hrs)

    2. Have two arrival destinations

    3. Release custom scenery with additional 'virtual' runways

    4. Land two abreast, either side of the centreline

  14. Hi Ted,

Thanks for flying and for the feedback.

Of course, with hindsight, you could always have sequenced it better. We've already debriefed areas to tighten up within the ATC crew along these lines. It's about continual improvement.

Ultimately though, 67 planes barrelling into a single runway probably means someone has to go around in circles, whichever way you want to cut it.

Anyway, our end goal is to bring you an event to enjoy. Sometimes that is going to mean having a bit of a chuckle when things go pear-shaped. Not that they did, and nobody needs to explain themselves.

Nuf said. Look forward to seeing you along the route.

    Cheers,

    Rob

    WF ATC Manager

P.S. There are serious plans in the pipeline to assure a high level of service for the arrival - as we have demonstrated in many years past.
