I understood to be 1858 local time.

Hi Christopher, this would be UTC or Zulu time, the Controller software is set to display this time to ATC, while not an issue in NSW where the time is UTC + 10, if you were in South Australia where the time is UTC + 9.5 you would be 30 minuets off. Something to keep in mind.

ABC: "I believe that's not required for circuits"

As they were operating in class C, the answer is yes they need a flight plan.

AIP ENR 1.10-3 2.3 Flight notification,
ATS is Air traffic service aka ATC.

    Quote

Pilots of VFR flights nominating a SARTIME to ATS, and those intending to operate in controlled airspace (except for VFR flights in Class E airspace) must submit flight details to ATS.

Personally, I don't know what the benefit is in the pilot declining to file a flight plan based off their beliefs, it was a simple request from ATC, and realistically the simple most effective answer, should have been "sure not a problem"

I understand your point, however, this was just an example. I was doing a flight into YBBN (uncontrolled at the time) with a mate and we had joined the STAR and finally the ILS for 19L, both making calls as per normal on 122.8, etc. As I touch down, I exit the runway. As my friend was on short final, this cessna appears out of nowhere and lands on 01R - straight through him. There were no calls or comms whatsoever from this pilot.

I highly agree with Daniel in the sense that everyone has different sims, wxr clients, etc., however, shouldn't it be everyone's responsibility to make sure they are using current weather to avoid incidents like this?

Let me just point out, that the section I qouted from you was.

What you have added above is completely different, if thats what you meant to say in the first instance, then say it. otherwise, my statement relates soley to the section of text you wrote that I quoted.

As always Traffic in the air has right of way over traffic on the ground, if you are taking off you must give way regardless if you think they are using the "wrong runway" The biggest unprofesional part on Vatsim is everyone thinks they have right of way.

I can tell you for a fact, that pilots land and take off oppisite direction all the time, in calm winds, seen it at many places I fly into, as recent as last week in Newman, factoring in shorter taxi times from the apron, and shorter airbone times, rather than going North to go South, if the wind is below 5 knots.

  5. Open VATSYS

Log in as an Observer using the VATSIM recomended call sign format of initals_OBS. Example NZ_OBS

To listen to an Active ATC Frequency, on the VSCS panel, select ADD FREQ then type in the name of the position you want to observe eg SY_TWR and enter. Then select the position from the left hand side of the VSCS panel and select receive in the options list.

Refer to the VATSYS documentation here https://virtualairtrafficsystem.com/docs/

On a related note, the new policy officially recognises our Procedural Tower Endorsement as "Restricted Aerosromes/Airspace" so that is a bonus for us.

Reading the GCRP I would be inclined to say that a Procedural Tower endorsment is independant to the restricted airspace endorsement.

We have 29 Towers in Austral, 25% of that would be 7, thats not enough to cover all the Procedural towers.

I would also be intrested to know if, when some one receivces their S3, if that automaticly qualifies them for a procedural tower endorsement, as with the current situation.

  7. There is no hard and fast way to set up vatsys, each user, and position requires the controller to be able to set up their screen to suit them, depending on the work area you have.

My post above, shows an example of working Enroute, 3 TCU's and 3 Aerodrome positions, however, if those positions were filled by other people then I would for certian be shreading the amount of widnows I had open.

Here is one of me running Ground, I'm not even using the main screen, only the ground display, and strip bays.

When a new flight plan arrives in the ADEP bay, I cock it, then fill it out with the RWY, SID, Altitude, and Squawk code, this helps when the pilot calls, I can issue the clearnce straight away, rather than asking the pilot to standby.
When the Pilot calls for clearance I activate it, then the pilot requests push I uncock the strip.

As an incumbent Aerodrome controller, you also have to understand that vatsys is based off the Enroute and Terminal control software.

Another thing to remember is, when you are logged in as _OBS, nothing you do will have any affect on the operations of the network, in otherwords, touch everything, learn what it does, you cant break it.

It will be interesting to see what happens with ML-FLW_CTR. Under the GCAP I would consider that a Traffic Management Unit, meaning it would be available to an S3 controller.

Thats exactly what it is and, I don't see any reason why it can't be, it will be an endorsed position so the controller will be trained. Flow resides in the TCU and is operated by TCU controllers In Australia, so it's more realistic for us.

Vatsims top down policy means that ATC positions are mixed up compared to the real world. Entoute is a entry position in the ATC career path, with TCU controllers needing to have worked enroute for a set period of time before moving around.

  9. A draft of the Vatsim Gobal Air Traffic Control Administration Policy has been released and is open for discussion over on the Vatsim forums.

There is a lot going on including, introducing new ATC positions including radio operators, traffic flow management, ramp controllers, FSS (as a flight service station not an oceanic positions), reviewing ATC ratings, additional endorsements including event endorsement, minimum activity requirements (currently 1 hour per 12 months in the draft)

Head over to the forums, read the info, contribute and participate in the discussions.

3.2.4.5 If the Procedural Tower position normally responsible for a terminal
control area and aerodrome is unavailable and that terminal control
area lies under a normal sector, the controller of that normal sector
may assume responsibility for that terminal control area and all
aerodrome control functions at that aerodrome.

Furthermore, you should also look at providing a radar service to VFR aircraft where the (Formerlly RAS now known as Sydney/Perth Centre) is available to pilots that request it, rather than just saying you are VFR OCTA switch to 122.8.

Every effort should be made, where workload permits, to provide the greatest servivce to pilots.

  11. My set up version 2.0

I recently decided I was fed up with a corner desk, sitting in the half circle section wasn't ideal for flying with hardware, for both civil and military simming. During the last lock down I kicked off a DIY project, to replace my desk. I also brought a 34" curved monitor.

I kept one of my old 22" monitors and flipped it to a portrait orientation, Surprisingly I felt like I had more screen realestate.

The below photo is WOL working top down to SY ML and CB.

I totally agree Daniel, having been in the police for 30yrs.  Rules are for the guidance of wise men, and the strict compliance of fools.

Are you suggesting that people who elect to follow, promote and educate about the rules are fools?

What is the point of extensive community consultation on divisional policy's, of which you have actively participated in, if compliance is only applicable to fools, and "wise men" can interpret them as they please.

Disappointing to see that divisional staff, are not supportive of the policy's and procedures that have been introduced and put in place by their staff counterparts. Does not reflect greatly on the division, and integrity of the leadership team.

I have also been involved in ANZAC Day flights over Gallipoli and following your thoughts that also contravenes the rules.

Flying from point A to Point B in a Military aircraft is not against the rules. Only the activities listed in the Policy. These are not "my thoughts" these are the facts as listed in the policy.

Thanks Kirk. I am sure that if we all had the time to go thru every event we would find something that contravenes some part of a rule

Or maybe like all rules and laws some common sense needs to be applied.

The requirement is for all VATSIM members to be aware and follow the rules whilst using the network, regardless of weather or not you think they are not applicable. For what purpose is it to have rules if people are just going to do as they please because they "applied common sense"

  15. The reason there is such a low number of WF global ATC is because WF are pushing the Divisions to do more, after the constant complaints about WF not going to a specific area. Divisons need to ensure ATC is rostered 24 hours prior to WF arriving in their airspace, otherwise WF global ATC will take over.
