  1. Hi folks, sorry to bring up an old topic but can someone please explain to me how you deliver a pdc in euroscope? I have been learning how to use Euroscope the past couple of days after a long time away from controlling and I haven’t found anything that explains it well. Is it a simple matter of typing .pdc and pushing enter after you have the aircraft selected or are there other steps?

In regards to its use in VATPAC I can see the benefits for both parties, mainly the pilots. Recently I was controlling Sydney approach and I got peppered with aircraft at one time with no tower controller, so much so that it took me a while to give full verbal clearances to pilots that were waiting and wanting to know what to plan for. A pdc would have reduced their delay and frustration. As a pilot in real life I think they are great, they make the whole process more streamline and efficient.

  2. Hey everyone, good to see alot of people turnout for the event. Just a couple of tips that will make your flight, and everyone else's bliss. Mostly to do with the radiowork:

    1. Dont cut in during a conversation from atc to a pilot, i have heard this happen numerous times tonight and when the traffic levels are high it only creates more confusion for both parties.

    2. Be patient.

    3. When reading back, only read back the essintials (runway, altitude, headings) keep it short and snappy with your callsign once only.

    4. Tower controllers if you have aircraft in the circuit they have priority, dont get caught up in airways clearence and then find the aircraft had to go around due to not having landing clearence. Try and time it well, dont be distracted.

    5. Have fun!

Remember try not to overload the freq, if you cant get through anf you need something urgent, use text or wait.

    :)

  3. On ya Flukey. Ill support this also by opening SY_APP every so often for those IFR inbound/outbounds, and also fly myself.

Flying in and out of Bankstown in real life is a buzz and I encourage the online pilot's to utilize the ATC service that will be opened up in the area.

  4. Yes I get to see some lovely VIP aircraft at work everyday parked on the Eastern Apron at YSSY. Including the RAAF B737-700 that transports that little weird looking man around we call Johnny, and the last couple of days there was a large USAF KC-10 parked on the Apron which was quite interesting.

  5. Just to add to what Matt has said on this topic, some controllers may be asking themselves, 'well how do we know when the aircraft is out of radar coverage', as VRC always shows aircraft on radar in the selected visibility range. Unfortunately with the resources we have, there is a bit of guess work involved, but to give you a bit of an idea, refer to this picture that outlines the estimated radar coverage all over Australia http://www.vatpac.org/vat-dean/australia/radar.jpg This picture is also found in the Airspace - Australia section of this website.

With that picture in mind, you can imagine where the aircraft will be leaving/entering radar coverage. Note: most of the sectors in WA and NT dont have radar coverage and require the use of procedural methods (eg position reporting) to gather where an aircraft actually is (even though we can see him on VRC  )

If any other online controllers here have any other useful info on the zone's of radar coverage in Australia please feel free to add to what I have said.

  6. Thanks to Luke, Daniel and Ben who opened up some atc sectors in the Perth area, it would have been around their lunch time (bar Ben) that they opened up. I flew VOZ429 from Sydney to Perth and enjoyed the change from the East Coast of oz, to the dry dusty WA lands. Was also good to brush up on position reporting out in those procedural sectors.

  7. What a great night, well done to all the ATC staff involved, you all did a great job. I flew VOZ885 from MEL to SYD and enjoyed every min of it.

In relation to improving the event next time we have Sydney selected for the event:

    - Have Two Director Frequencies: Andrew I thought did a great job considering his workload last night, but you could tell he was overworked and im sure his blood pressure would have been up after last night :P I think Director East and West would have reduced the stress and also open up the freq so heading, speed and alt adjustments didnt all have to be rushed and the sequence could be more effectivly maintained.

    - Audly2 STAR?? Might have been effective if 100% of the pilots could fly the STAR correctly, as Andrew said it's just another thing to worry about having to monitor if they are on track and if they need any assistance. Vectoring seems the better option in my mind.

    - Tower East and West: Ive talked about this before, hate to bring it up again. For an event like this we really do need two Tower frequencies. I was on final's when the traffic was pretty much peak, I was suprised to see that last night only SY_TWR was online, and it wasnt event Ben  No GND or DEL. Luke i think it was on tower had aircraft everywhere requesting taxi and clearence, I think eventually GND did come on which free'd things up a bit, but im sure Tower East would have come in handy in that peak time.

So that's my thought's anyway, fairly similar to the others. Once again great job to everyone involved, it really has become an event everyone wants to get involved in which is fantastic :)

  8. If services below tower are opened (GND & DEL - which without a doubt they will)' date=' tower really shouldn't have any problems handling the load.[/quote']

    Gday Tristan,

Yes the Twr may be able to handle the workload, it would just be nice if we could Simulate real world SYD operations and open both East and West Tower since we dont get to do it often, being a non-standard position and all.

  9. Regarding your comment on Ben Mathieson's position in the last event, well the last event wasn't rostered by VATPAC ;)

    MMMmmmmmm

Just a suggestion, since there will be a high amount of traffic expected inbound to Sydney, in the event of Parallel Rwy Op's being in progress and to simulate real life SYD op's can SY-E_TWR be opened up? I figure if we can have an Approach North and South, we should have a Tower East and West :-)

    Cheers.

  10. Gday Everyone,

Im about to relocate to Bankstown, Sydney and trying to decide which internet system to set up at my new residence, was wondering if anyone on this network uses Telstra 3G broadband and how well VRC and FS with FSINN (and Active sky) run? I know there is a whole lot of variables in regards to reception ect, but just after a general idea for Western Sydney Area and if anyone has had any problems?

    Thanks Guys

  11. The 2 main STAR's at the Gold Coast are either Greav2 arrival rwy14/32 for when conditions are basically IMC, and the Roony5 arrival rwy 14/32 when its visual conditions. As a passanger into the Gold Coast you get to see a fair bit more scenery if rwy 14 is in use for your arrival as it takes you over the coast then an inland turn to track either Currunbin or Broadbeach depending what arrival you are on, then onto finals or final approach course.

    Roony5- http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/publications/current/dap/BCGSR02-110.pdf

My first commercial flight was with DJ on the same route SYD-OOL, and it was bumpy as hell on descent passing near a storm cell. Couldnt of asked for more :P

Have a good flight Paul :)

  12. I have noticed the mention in this thread of the phrase "Squawk Normal" as being fully interchangeable with "Squawk Charlie". I do not believe this is correct. My understanding is that "Squawk Normal" is used to instruct a pilot to return to "normal" (Mode A/C) after squawking IDENT.

Yes you are right Peter, however in SB3 when selecting transponder mode, the selections are either Standby or Normal, with the pilots that are still learning they sometimes get confused when you to tell them to squawk mode Charlie, and they come back with 'there is selection for that' or not quite sure what you mean. So we refer to it as Normal purely for the newbies sake and to ensure no confusion occurs.

  13. Ive noticed over the past couple of weeks pilots not switching their transponders from mode Standby to mode Charlie when departing. As a controller this gets very irritating having to get the a/c to to squawk the right mode, then verify level, especially if traffic levels are high.

So please guys make sure when you enter a runway, as you do your checks eg strobe lights on, landing light on, TRANSPONDER CONFIRM MODE C. otherwise we cant see you on radar when you depart.

    Thanks guys.

  14. I think given that the VRC1.2 just came out, alot of tower positions have been manned to play with the new voice ATIS.

Thus S3's and even C1's doing Tower to get to play with the new toys. Who can blame them?

Which is why I was on SY_TWR last night Kirk, was trying out the new voice ATIS and also FS Tower View. That and I wanted a break from controlling APP/CTR.

Alex's point is a good one, if someone has taken your preferred TWR position, then don?t sit around and wait for it or whinge, try and fill some of the other Primary Tower positions. Eg Canberra last night, Andrew Harle opened up CB_APP for most of the night, would have been a perfect opportunity for one of the usual suspect SY_TWR staff to open CB_TWR or ML_TWR to help obtain traffic from different regions besides Sydney. For the time I was there I didn?t see CB_TWR open up, but saw alot of OBS's who were probably homing in on me and when I would leave so they could quickly jump in.

Class D towers are also another great option as Nick said. You get to control more airspace, and actually get to set aircraft up on an approach rather than just saying 'cleared to land' all the time. Definately worth learning more about, keeping in mind Coffs Harbour is the home of online VFR pilots too so if you open up CH_TWR, they will turn up. Even more so if you give them some notice on their forums.
