The only downside is the occasional 'sorry in real world we need to wait 10 minutes between departures' or 'all the stands are full so the airport is closed'.

There have always been plans to deal with that, I hope that exists still 😃

  2. We have always let local ATC take over before during or after, and stepped in/up when needed. 40 spread around the world in all time zones is quiet a sufficient roster for Global ATC.

I agree tho, divisions should roster, so they can also have the fun of controlling the group flights, and they can use local procedures, more fun that way.

AFV actually makes it better to extend coverage, you can only primary one frequency and this is what pilot will see in their client, any other frequencies you are cross coupling too will not be displayed to any one else, it is standard practice to just ask the pilot to "contact me on 125.0" as they cross the sector boundary. This also happens in the real world were low traffic levels enable controllers to operate more than one frequency, often seen in Melbourne with aerodrome controllers during staff shortages.

Ah didn't know about that. So 125.0 is universal or is it just the specific area you are talking about?

Also, I think there aren't major sectors WF is crossing this time which may lack coverage.

    Hi Charan,

Extended coverage wouldn't be provided during WorldFlight. It is generally only something that occurs in VATPAC and we'll have sufficient controllers.

In the event a Division cannot provide enough local controllers or coverage, the WorldFlight ATC Team will fill in the gaps.

Also, the WF ATC Team has been selected already and if you haven't had contact, I'd assume you weren't selected. There was over 300 applicants and they only took around 40.

    Cheers,

    Cal

I assumed I wasn't selected, but thanks for clarifying that. We have definitely done the extended coverage before outside of VATPAC, but that's interesting to know. All the same, will look fwd to joining on some flights!

    Cheers!!

  5. Hello folks,

I posted this qn on the WF forum, but was directed here. I haven't yet been selected or confirmed for this year's ATC support, still wanted to ask the qn, if you don't mind.

During WF, it is customary to provide extended coverage when ATC members available are low in numbers. This changes with AFV and ranges. Is there any plan on how we are going to do this?

I do understand we can prime multiple frequencies, but would probably need to have it handy when extending coverage.

    Cheers!!
