  1. Hi guys,

Coming to the end of my Basic Training, IFR and VFR etc.ย  MSFS2020 is a week away and I wanted to know should I get some software ready like VATSpy and vroute.info etc ?

Should I be joining a Virtual Airline, I am not 100% sure how to connect in so to speak, I mean when I get the sim it will be doing some VFR circuits etc but just wondering the best way to be prepared with the software and people etc ?

Also is it possible to connect in to listen to others whilst not having an active flight sim or not ?

    Thank you in advance :)

The POB/DUAL element in the ready call was introduced sometime in 2009. My first lesson was cancelled due to excessive wind at Parafield. Little did I know at the time but that day became Black Saturday in Victoria 2009. I can remember having to call the 'dual' at the ready on the 5th or 6th lesson. Parafield required its use from then on.

Hey Rusty, fellow SA here, drive past Parafield most days ๐Ÿ‘

    Matthew,ย

Yes, move onto VFR then IFR.ย  It will help enourmously.ย  Please note that much of the content is based on the US so there will be some differences to what you experience in VATPAC airspace but it will give you the basics and more.

This is getting on a bit but it was very helpful for me with basic aircraft handling, terminology etc. Try it out and see if it interests you.

I have contacted the person at this website Greg but have not got a response back, I try and register and its like it doesn't work anymore, its such a shame that seems like a great resource, thanks anyway for the info to begin with ๐Ÿ‘

  4. Hi folks,

I am unsure if this is a Vatpac or MSFS question. ย Upon reading more onย airport layouts etc it's evident that whilst in the sim I should be referring to Airport charts, for taxiing, off ramp on runway, direction, ATC basically everything on departure and arrivals etc.

is it's common practice to view these orย obtain these from an external site or do we know if they will be available in MSFS2020.

Is there an app that I can download the airports im departing/landing and using my iPad or tablet to view them?

what do you guys do to access and use said charts ?

Thank you in advance folks ๐Ÿ‘

Hi all, have been registered with VATSIM since Dec 2006 but never active, except for a taster login and sat in my Cessna on the grass somewhere (can't remember, either Brisbane or Sydney) to observe and listen. Was quite informative. Haven't visited VATSIM hardly at all ever since, nor FS hardly either. Like Matthew, I'm wanting to get active and "do it properly" etc. Have FS 2002, suits me fine. Did have Squawkbox on my older PC (still have the PC, but unused) but not on my current workhorse PC (both are WinXP, yes I know, obsolete but still working fine). As a newbie, have similar questions to Matthew. Thank you Brendan Chen, I copied your numbered steps post and saved it in my learning notes, will follow your steps. This is my first time posting in the VATSIM forums. Have set up my 2 screens, joystick, speakers, inside my retired 1981 Mazda 929, adds to the realism as am in a cabin, and with black plastic thrown over the windows is a totally enclosed environment. Cheers, Mark.

Love it thats awesome, we can be training buddies lol.ย  I have basically read most on the website under the Pilots resources but still needing to work in the training modules etc, will slowly get to those over the coming days hopefully.ย  I do wish you well in your learning journey too.ย  The big thing is being able to listen ATM but I dont have a sim as I am between sims due to reformat and new build etc but hopefully someone will have a discord etc, I did look at the Vatpac/Vatsmi one but not sure how active it is, anyways hope to chat soon!

    Exactly, pre-cache

broadband data is huge, and was mentioned by one of the MSFS developers, so there will be an offline mode and pre-cache mode, skim this little avsim thread to the end https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/560146-can-we-see-images-of-pre-cache-mode/?do=findComment&comment=4065305z

I know the link is old, but i just can't find other quotes ATM, but MSFS mentioned it so i'm good, you didn't need to know that a pre-cache would be needed, because Bing maps is being used which is just like FStiles/FSEarthtiles, but with better/more data, and FStiles downloaded so much data, it got Googles attention

You would just pre-cache your local/frequently used area from the available 2+ petabytes of bing data, i've seen/mentioned youtube'd an average fs2020 10 hour flight test/s used 9GB of internet data, not bad really, but it adds up because that test did not mention live weather and live AI flights, (Which wouldn't be much more data for the area) nor did he mention leaving the mapped area. Which ALL depends on your internet connection, as you mentioned, which makes not only Australians nervous (but mostly Australians nervous)

Cache size is not so relevant (min 500GB and up, all good), because you ain't gonna cache 2 petabytes , but i feel speed is relevant for the cache.

So IMHO discounting pre-cache storage option for FS2020 is just a waste of downloading frequented data. And on my rigs i like to keep things seperate, OS , FS, Storage

Yes of course, I bought a new 2TB SSD for this very thing, to be able to download and pre-cache my regular routes, good latency Ram will also go a very long way too, thanks for the info Justin, cheers!

I'll be pre ordering Premium Deluxe boxed edition from Aerosoft, a new SSD (maybe NVMe) for w10 and NVMe for cache. Then fly FS2020 and see what i can't live without

Hey Justin can you explain when you say cache are you referring to the sims ability for us as end users to store a certain amount of terrain data etc so we will not have to continually download it if they make up our regular flying routes etc?

if this is the case do you know anything in regards to possible cache sizes we can have or any other data on this, I have been wanting to know the answer to this also, having a good internet connection is one thing but ppl in the household ain't gonna be happy when I'm using all the bandwidth constantly if you get my drift.

I'm hearing you. Most expensive pre-order I've ever made. Over 3k!! New rig arrives this week to give me a couple of weeks to get it sorted before release date

Yep, it started as a new yoke which became a new yoke, two throttle quadrants, new rudders, radio and autopilot panels then a new CPU which became a new case, CPU, mobo, Cooler, fans, Ram......ouch ouch ouch, but I was due and this is going to be worth it mate ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

But I think there are some rules and guidelines around that.ย  I'm not in it, so can't tell you much about it.ย  But like anything VATSIM, make sure you understand the T&Cs and follow the rules you'll be fine, if in doubt or any issues, talk to [email protected]

Awesome thanks so much Brendan cheers.

Question, when I am able to use FS2020 will it have its own download for vatsim and do I need to use a specific program to speak/listen to the ATC etc or it that unique to each Sim itself as to the other pilots and ATC they are connected to the specific sim perse ?

So, aside from adding to the assumption tally (and sharing that you've read everything), what was the objective of your post?

Hi Brett, to find out what is the best path for me to take in the Behemoth learning process, as you said three examples of assumptions in the thread.

I knew to ask the question because it's a huge undertaking for anyone to learn about flying in any capacity and this is certainly no different. ย I did not want to waste my time and not being effective in the process I guess.

I have simmed for many years but have never understood the context, actions and communication that underpins the art of flying. ย So for me I had mad a descision as I have invested heavily into the new sim and so I wanted to do this right because I have always wanted to do this for many years.

my personal circumstances has not allowed me previously to invest in even a little time to do this, right now I can so all the stars have currently aligned hence why I want to do his right.

thanks Brett for your question and guidance, greatly appreciated ๐Ÿ‘

Careful, you've just assumed that statement as 'literally every pilot ever in the history of pilots'. I think Joe used quotations on 'everything' for this reason.

That's great if you did read everything. But did reading about holding pattern sector entries prior to your very first flight, which most likely consisted of effects of controls, and flying straight and level, benefit you in any way? I highly doubt it, given that a majority of first time flyers are more focused on what rudder to stomp on when they're increasing or decreasing power.

You don't have to read 'everything' before you get online. There is a lot to gain in doing some flying whist you are reading (for the sake of clarity, not literally simultaneously flying online with your right hand whilst holding your AIP Book open to ENR 1.5, page 27, Section 3.4 with the left).

Yes no I understand what you mean, you have to put the whiteboard training into practice, as previously mentioned I am not in a position to but I must say I am keen to at least observe. ย I did ask the question about any local vatpac discords where other simmers may be streaming their sim within the discord and I could listen in, if anyone is currently doing this it would be great to participate if that's the done thing.

question on call signs, beacause we are virtual I could have a call sign that represents myself rather than every different airline I fly Peres?

For example my call sign could simply be something like VH-201 and that could be with me for the life of my vatsimming ?
