Flying in Oceanic Airspace:

Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.

All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"

One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.

Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.

The standard format is:

Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point.
Current Flight Level
Mach number if assigned by ATC.
Your next waypoint and estimate for that point.
The waypoint after that.

For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."

You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.

This Easter, VATPAC invites you to Sydney for our first annual Easter Egg Hunt! On the 27th of March, fly out of Sydney in search of 3 easter eggs at 3 different airports around NSW. Hints for where these airports are will be released throughout the event. The first pilot to identify, fly to and land at each airport wins! Expect full ATC coverage and plenty of prizes this March between 0730z and 1030z!

Event Details:

The idea of the Easter egg hunt is simple. From 0730z, one hint will be released every 30 minutes revealing three different locations. Pilots then depart Sydney in search for the airports. Once a pilot lands at the airport they believe the Easter egg is at, they take a screenshot and post it. The first pilot to correctly identify and fly to each airport wins!

Pilots and controllers must follow the relevant criteria below in order to be eligible to win a prize!

Prizes:

Thanks to the generous donations of some of the VATPAC staff, there will be four prizes up for grabs during the Easter egg hunt. The prizes are as follows:

Pilots: 3 x €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Vouchers - 1 per airport
Controllers: 1 x €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Voucher - all eligible controllers will be added to a draw and randomly selected to win the prize.

In order to be eligible to win one of the prizes pilots and controllers must follow the following procedures:

Pilots:

All pilots must depart Sydney (YSSY) and remain online and connected for the duration of the flight
Pilots must not use any sim rate enhancement
Pilots must follow all controller instructions and not take purposeful shortcuts or refuse sequencing to try and shorten the duration of their flight.
VATPAC events staff, senior staff and directors are not eligible to win pilot prizes.
Pilots must not use high performance aircraft to reduce their flights duration. This includes fighter jets, high altitude / speed airliners such as the Concorde, or any other aircraft purposely chosen for an unrealistic speed advantage.
Upon arrival at the chosen airfield, pilots must post a screenshot on the VATPAC discord and tag an event coordinator.
Pilots are only eligible to receive one (1) prize.
Pilots must only depart Sydney after the hint is released

All flights to correct airports will be closely tracked by Event Coordinators. If a member of the events team believes your flight was not in observance of the above criteria, or that you had any form of unfair advantage, they may deem you ineligible to receive a prize.

Controllers:

All rostered and unrostered controllers who contributed for at least one hour will be considered for the prize
Controllers not active for the duration of their rostered period (without a valid excuse) will be ineligible for the draw
Controllers who already received a pilot prize will not be eligible for the draw

At the close of the event the winners of each category will be announced.

ATC:

Any controllers interested in providing ATC services during this event are encouraged to apply here. Applications will be open until Monday the 24th of March, on which the roster will be released for public viewing. Controllers are encouraged to apply and reminded that they have the chance of winning one of the four prizes at random.

This July, brought to you by VATPAC in collaboration with the Indonesia and Singapore vACC's, we are delighted to present Long Haul - South East Asia Connect! Fly from Melbourne or Adelaide to either Jakarta or Singapore and expect full ATC all the way along the 6-8 hour stretch! From the red desert of Australia's centre, to the tropics of Java, you're bound to enjoy the scenery along the way! Join us with departure times ranging from 0300z to 0600z and arrival times ranging 1000z to 1400z for this incredible long haul marathon!

Event Details:

Long Haul - South East Asia Connect provides pilots with the opportunity of flying a long haul leg with full ATC! Pilots will be able to depart from two airports, Melbourne (YMML) and Adelaide (YPAD) and will be able to fly to either Singapore (WSSS) or Jakarta (WIII). The following times are indicative of when ATC services will be rostered during this event. In order to guarantee ATC services during your flight, you are highly recommended to depart during the departure windows listed below.

DEP Fields

Adelaide Airport (YPAD): 0400z - 0600z

ARR Fields

Jakarta Airport (WIII): 1000z - 1300z
Singapore Airport (WSSS): 1100z - 1400z

Pilots Arriving into Singapore (WSSS) are highly recommended to be familiar with the Pilot Briefing Pack before arrival. The package is available here: https://vats.im/wsss

We recommend bringing some extra holding fuel as controllers will be busy trying to accommodate the influx of pilots whilst trying to maintain separation standards.
