Join us as we light up the Australian Skies between Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide on Friday the 28th of July (Saturday Morning Downunder). Event Details: Friday Night Ops is a weekly event run by VATUSA; normally visiting places around the USA. This time around, Friday Night Ops is coming to the land Downunder within the famous ‘J-Curve’. Briefing Video: Take a look at our small briefing video for our US friends! Flight Planning: In Australia, flight plans are filed in the ICAO format. SIDs and STARs are not included in the flight plan. This will be provided by the Clearance Delivery controller and with the Centre controller prior to top of descent. Pre-Departure Clearances (PDCs) are used in Australia. Pilots are required to readback PDCs to the delivery controller. However, when reading back the PDC you do not need to read back everything. Just the SQUAWK, DEPARTURE PROCEDURE, RUNWAY and BAY. It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you to Sydney and Auckland as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old. Fly between Sydney (YSSY) and Auckland (NZAA) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight! Routes: We recommend the following routes between Sydney and Auckland. YSSY – NZAA: DCT TESAT L521 AA DCT NZAA – YSSY: DCT AA N774 TESAT DCT Flying in Oceanic Airspace: Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC. All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio" One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports. Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them. The standard format is: Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next." You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports. Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here. Controllers: Controllers who wish to reserve a position to control during this event are encouraged to apply via https://events.vatpac.org/. After the controller roster is released on Saturday evening, no controllers will be added to the roster. Positions that do not have a nominated controller (i.e. no controller assigned on the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control. *Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the rostered positions are filled.
