VATUSA, in partnership with VATPAC, invites you to Friday Night Ops: Downunder! Join us as we light up the Australian Skies between Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide on Friday the 28th of July (Saturday Morning Downunder).

    Event Details:
Friday Night Ops is a weekly event run by VATUSA; normally visiting places around the USA. This time around, Friday Night Ops is coming to the land Downunder within the famous ‘J-Curve’.

    Briefing Video:
Take a look at our small briefing video for our US friends!

    Flight Planning:
In Australia, flight plans are filed in the ICAO format. SIDs and STARs are not included in the flight plan. This will be provided by the Clearance Delivery controller and with the Centre controller prior to top of descent.

Pre-Departure Clearances (PDCs) are used in Australia. Pilots are required to readback PDCs to the delivery controller. However, when reading back the PDC you do not need to read back everything. Just the SQUAWK, DEPARTURE PROCEDURE, RUNWAY and BAY.

[PILOT] “Melbourne Delivery, Qantas 436 with PDC Readback.”
[ML_DEL] “Qantas 436, Melbourne Delivery, go ahead with PDC readback”
[PILOT] “Qantas 436 is cleared to Sydney, DOSEL1 departure, runway 27, squawk 4457, bay C3”
[ML_DEL] “Qantas 436” OR “Qantas 436 contact ground 121.7 for push”

If you do not receive a PDC, you can request airways clearance with the Delivery Controller. However you are required to readback the entire voice clearance.

VATPAC recommends the following routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide

YSSY – YMML: DCT TESAT H65 RAZZI Q29 ML DCT
YSSY – YPAD: DCT TESAT A576 KADOM H44 MAXEM Q60 BLACK H309 AD DCT

YMML – YSSY: DCT ML H129 DOSEL Y59 TESAT DCT
YMML – YPAD: DCT ML H345 AD DCT

YPAD – YSSY: DCT AD H247 CULIN Y59 TESAT DCT
YPAD – YMML: DCT AD V255 BENDO Y12 ARBEY H119 ML DCT

Aerodrome and Departure/Approach Charts are available for free within Australia which can be found here.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you to Sydney and Auckland as we commemorate  those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.

Fly between Sydney (YSSY) and Auckland (NZAA) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!

    Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Sydney and Auckland.

YSSY – NZAA: DCT TESAT L521 AA DCT

NZAA – YSSY: DCT AA N774 TESAT DCT

    Flying in Oceanic Airspace:

Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.

All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"

One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.

Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.

    The standard format is:

    • Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point.
    • Current Flight Level
    • Mach number if assigned by ATC.
    • Your next waypoint and estimate for that point.
    • The waypoint after that.

For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."

You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.

Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

    Controllers:
Controllers who wish to reserve a position to control during this event are encouraged to apply via https://events.vatpac.org/. After the controller roster is released on Saturday evening, no controllers will be added to the roster. Positions that do not have a nominated controller (i.e. no controller assigned on the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.

*Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the rostered positions are filled. Please see a member of the Board of Directors, or a C3 rated controller to be granted permission to open a non-standard position. Please review the controller NOTAM for detailed information about which Non-Standard Positions are automatically authorized.

Transcon is back! This rendition of Transcon Shuttle Eastbound is making its way to Melbourne! Fly from Perth (YPPH), Broome (YBRM), Darwin (YPDN) or Alice Springs (YBAS) to Melbourne (YMML)! Each departure field has a different departure window based off the flight time.

    Event Details:
Transcon Shuttle is an event designed to provide pilots with the opportunity to explore the vast Australian countryside from four nominated departure locations on the Western and Northern coast, fly cross-country and arrive into Melbourne in the south.

This time round we have provided you with four departure airports. Each flight ranges between 2 -> 4.5 hours all inbound one arrival aerodrome. This event is designed to provide pilots with the opportunity to explore the country from four different locations, travel across the country, and arrive into one concentrated arrival aerodrome. Controllers get the chance to control new and exciting locations with larger levels of traffic and create a sequence inbound to the arrival aerodrome.

    Departure Window:
For each of the departure aerodromes, a 2-hour controller block has been rostered to provide ATC services to departure aircraft. You are recommended to depart during this time to arrive into Melbourne with ATC Services. The rostered time for all aerodromes is below:

    • Perth: 0300z – 0500z

You know it’s the end of the month when Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you to Melbourne and Christchurch! Join us as we unite with our New Zealand friends and cross between the Tasman!

Fly between Melbourne (YMML) and Christchurch (NZCH) with the expectation of full ATC services throughout your flight!

To accommodate for the time zone differences between Australia and New Zealand, this weeks Spilled Milk Run Monday has been moved between 0630-1030z.

All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio".

    • Current/Previous waypoint name and the time which you crossed that point.
    • Current flight level.

    Find more information here.

VATUSA in partnership with VATPAC, welcomes you to Friday Night Ops! Join us as we light up the skies between Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide! Kicking off on Friday 15th October at 2300z, leave your hangover behind and light up our Australian skies and get your flights planned!

VATPAC will have the skies covered between Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide! We encourage you to fly between these airfields in any order you wish. If you are more of the daring type, try flying into our Class D or Class G airfields.

    Event Details:

    What is Friday Night Ops?

Friday Night Ops is a weekly event run by VATUSA normally visiting places all over the United States! This time around, Friday Night Ops are coming to the land downunder and flying in Australia between Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

    Flight Planning

In Australia, flight plans are filed in the ICAO method, with the SID/STAR not included with the initial filing. This will be provided by ATC on contact with clearance delivery (for departure) and with Centre, usually prior to initial descent clearance.

PDC's in Australia are quite common with controllers handing them out. In Australia all pilots must read back PDC's to the delivery controller. When reading back a PDC, you do not need to read back everything. All you need to read back as a pilot is:

Squawk, Departure Procedure, Runway and advise your bay number.

[PILOT] "Melbourne Delivery, Qantas 436 with PDC readback."
[ML_DEL] "Qantas 436 g'day Melbourne Delivery, go ahead with PDC readback"
[PILOT] "Qantas 436 is cleared to Sydney, DOSEL1 departure, runway 27, squawk 4457; bay C3"

    [ML_DEL] "Qantas 436"

    Routes:

VATPAC recommends the following routes flying into and out of Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. Aerodrome and Procedure Charts can be located here.

    ATC:

Controllers who wish to control during this event are encouraged to submit their ATC Applications here. Applications will remain open until three days before the event (12OCT21), after which the roster will be released and available for viewing.
