On climbout in VATPAC airspace, passing 10,000ft you should set 1013 in the Kollsman window (the altimeter subscale). This is the transition altitude in Australia. On descent through the transition layer (usually FL110) you should set the local QNH for the destination, or the forecast QNH if measured QNH not available, or the area QNH if forecast QNH is not available. If in receipt of a control service, ATC should give you the destination or area QNH as applicable when they assign a level below the transition layer.

You can also request the area QNH, particularly useful as a VFR aircraft OCTA.

Yes so the same as the UK then

We can’t logon like the UK can with a relief call sign, we only log onto the position once the other has logged off. However, if this could be changed, it would help a lot with handover. Also, our tags don’t stay up to date with TAATS/vatSys, they reset every time a controller connects/disconnects

*continues to hide behind english flag and only english knowledge* 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

  3. That seems like an excessively long hand over especially when busy. Personally, I just go “tags are up-to-date & XYZ config“.

That probably isn’t the Aussie way or proper way of doing it but thought I’d add my pennies worth in (or cent).

However, very detailed and a good post, especially for your training students. We use a similar one in the UK called PRAWNS, don’t ask me the abbreviations because I don’t bother and do my own style 😂

  4. We in the UK use our CTS system for booking positions. It's pretty civilised, if you want to book to control, then you do. If you can't commit to the booking, then you unbook. Occasionally people no-show their bookings, which isn't really an issue to be fair because you can just log on instead.

If a member is 15 or more minutes late for their booking, their booking becomes void. I don't think it would be too much drama to invest in a booking system. They're really beneficial, especially for booking ATC exams as it's a way of advertising the exam too, other controllers will see the exam and it encourages controllers to book adjacent.

I personally wouldn't worry about a detailed policy unless it's seriously abused.

I think the bookings calendar is GOOD idea!

  5. Morning, afternoon, evening or whatever time it is on your side of the world!

Just a quick question about the VAT-Spy file for the Australian sectors. I wondered if there was just one big file for updated sectors worldwide? I installed the one on the VATPAC website. However, it has removed my London AC/TC sectors. Any idea how to merge the two? Example pictures below.
