  1. Hi Greg,

When the controller first contacted me (over chat) he asked me if I realised I was operating in a restricted area to which I said yes, he then suggested that I should have contacted him for clearance to operate there only to later express doubt as to that requirement, it was a perfectly friendly conversation and there was no dramas.

You are right about R405 being similar to the Yarra CTAF, the ERSA says

BROADCAST intentions entering and leaving R405 on FREQ 120.8 MHz. This FREQ is not
    monitored by Airservices Australia.

I wouldn't expect controllers to be across the board with all these procedures, I'm only just learning about them myself.

Maybe a quick heads up over chat would be helpful? i.e. "Hi, I will be operating in R405 on Unicom not above 500'/1000' "

Yes but how much over water where you away from the coast?

While The term ‘coastal flying’ refers to the practice of flying close to the beach and following the contours of the coastline. This practice is not permitted when flying in Victor 1 South between Ben Buckler and Cape Solander as doing so will put you within the Sydney control zone.

Ah that's a good point Rob, I may have been "coastal flying" a bit and not far enough out as per those restrictions.

Still the controller thought I was over the land as his scope suggested.

  3. In tonights Real Ops Sydney I was flying in R405 above Sydney Harbour when I was queried by a controller about being there uncontrolled. There appeared to be some ambiguity about the issue so I thought I'd raise it here in the forums.

Details about R405 are outlined in ERSA FAC Sydney (Kingsford Smith) http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/current/ersa/FAC_YSSY_16AUG2018.pdf

An interesting pdf  about it here https://seaplanes.org.au/resources/Documents/SPAA-R405-a.pdf

  4. Just remember Tristan that the routes are numbered 5 now, i.e. Georges River 5

    and;

I think the reporting altitudes at Prospect and 2RN are now 1500' regardless of which runway at Bankstown is active...

I'm not aware of any other changes, you'd have to read over the ERSA and double check everything :P

Sydney chopper ops are also a little special in that there are set inbound/outbound routes (coded clearances) for Kingsford Smith laid out in ERSA.

Generally clearances are issued by the relevant ADC position.

I put together a little map outlining these routes a while back, the ERSA has updated a little since then but it is still essentially the same and might give controllers a good visualisation of what's going on in Sydney, hope this helps anyway...
