  1. The operations department have been working hard on several projects over the last few months, including finalizing vatSys sector files and update integration, alongside updating several documents including Local Instructions, vMATS, and policy changes. On top of this, the Operations team worked hard to build and update the sector files for World-Flight, ensuring that the controller team were able to easily manage the vast amounts of traffic. As always, the operations team is always looking for people who are passionate and would like to assist the team. If you think you have what it takes to help manage the Airspace over the VATPAC sky, send an email to [email protected]; we would love to have you on board! Projects last 3 months - Worldflight updates, including adding radar sites, updating sector files, and reviewing frequencies. - Pacific region SID/STAR & Airspace review. - AIRAC 2013 released with minor updates to Australian RNAV points. Ongoing projects (next 1 – 2 months) - YBBN & YMML Local Instruction review being completed as a priority with an expectation of release late January. - Controller Position & Rating Policy under review with changes being proposed to make clearer the non-standard position guidelines. Future Projects (next 3 months) - vMATS annual review to be carried out, making use of the real-world MATS provided by ASA. - Controller Position and Frequency audit to better align with real world procedures. Cheers, -- Ryan McDonald Acting Director of Airspace and Publications VATSIM Australia Pacific

  11. Hi everyone, I'm super stoked to see "The Scope" back again! It was something we started quite a few years ago and was found to be very popular. Now some 800+ VATPAC members are able to stay up to date with the latest news, every quarter, without needing to go looking for it. Special thanks to Ben and Blair from the Community Engagement team for creating this re imagined version of 'The Scope'. I understand there may have been some concern amongst the membership after a turbulent last month (or so) with regards to staffing changes, but rest assured the division is functioning at full capacity and is continuing to grow along with the rest of VATSIM (who I believe will be shortly announcing 100,000 active members for the first time!) It's an exciting time. As most of you know, I have been working closely with Jake for the past year with vatSys and the testing program. I am pleased to say that vatSys has been released. You can download it today from http://virtualairtrafficsystem.com/. I cannot wait to be able to coordinate with everyone properly! This is certainly a troubling time for everyone, but it's great to know that we can still log in to our favorite hobby and fly or control, and put our worries aside. It's great to see a number of members from the past, showing their faces and becoming active in the community again. I have noticed a significant increase in ATC coverage in the past few weeks and last nights milk run was busy from 7pm until 11pm (I was sweating, at least ... ) We have lots to look forward to for the remainder of the year. Worldflight in it's 20th year will be huge, no doubt and I'm sure we will have some great events with our Kiwi counterparts too. I encourage anyone who hasn't been around for some time to find their way back online to enjoy the new toys that are around the place (AFV, vatSys, myVATSIM, etc) I look forward to seeing a number of your names applying to be apart of our VATPAC leadership team in the coming months as we will be looking to permanently fill the Director of Operations, Director of ATC Training and Division Director positions. Ready your resumes! Cheers. Zach Biesse-Fitton, Interim Division Director, Vatsim Australia Pacific.
  12. Bi-Monthly Newsletter: The training department has been busy as always training VATPAC new controllers. Did you know that the VATPAC ATC Training Department releases a bi-monthly newsletter as well? That's correct! You can keep up to date with everything there is to know about the ATC Training Department and what's happening within the department by going to the VATPAC forums and looking under 'ATC Training'. Alternately, you can go to the "ATC Training" forum to read our latest bulletin or click below. This quarter's ATC tip: Controller Handovers What is the goal of an ATC position handover briefing? The goal of a position handover briefing is to ensure minimal disruption to pilots, and the highest possible situational awareness for the incoming controller. A position handover should be done with both controllers looking at the scope, in an environment free of distractions (for example, Discord co-ordination rooms, or the VSCS function of your controller client). What does an ATC position handover briefing look like? An ATC briefing should use the checklist “RAWFNTO”. • Runways – what runways are in use? • Airspace – what is the current airspace config in use? Are there any runways released to SMC.? • Weather – any diversions due weather? Any cells worth mentioning? TEMPOS, SIGMETS, ect. • Facilities – is everything working? • Navaids – anything unserviceable? • Traffic – provide any relevant traffic information – is anyone on a vector? What is your sequence? Who is taxing? • Outstanding actions – What are the outstanding actions for the aircraft? Is there any coord required? Do you need to give an aircraft an onwards clearance? Does an aircraft require landing clearance? An example of the following situation could be: “G’day, Runway 19L, runway 19R available upon request, weather is good but expecting a change to easterlies on the hour, everything is working, ILS for 19R unserviceable and has false indications reported so we have been assigning runway 19L. Traffic, RBA1352 at BENBO is cleared the ILS runway left. UAE401 descends via the STAR to 5000. ZOD tracks direct the control tower for an overfly and then city orbits, currently with a clearance limit of the control tower, not above 1500. Coordination for ZOD with the tower controller for the overfly and onward clearance and to cancel auto-release is still outstanding. Any questions?” This is by no mean a complete guide on what your handover briefings should consist of, and you should always be ready to adapt to the situation being presented in front of you. Any questions, feel free to ask below and a staff/training member will try to answer as best as possible You can read the PDF version of this by going here https://vatpac.org/controllers/tutorials/controller-handovers/. Remember to always look at the controller tutorials section of the website as things are always being added this sections regularly. If you have any questions email us at [email protected]
  13. IT Department We have been busy developing and researching new services to provide better experiences for members of VATPAC. This includes VATPAC Core v2 - which includes VATPAC’s Web Services, Pilot Assist and support for the new vatSys client. VATPAC Core v2 We have been looking into upgrades to our web services for VATPAC Core v2, expecting to use Amazon’s Web Services (AWS). Core v2 will be the backend of VATPAC’s services, and it will be the one place for all management and permissions. By using AWS, we are able to have: - Lower management costs, as we are paying by usage rather than a fixed fee - Greater security and privacy, with Amazon’s own dedicated issues management team and superior storage of confidential data by AWS - Serverless Architecture, meaning Amazon finds the best available server to serve the requested content - Greater efficiency, with faster response times from AWS servers and negligible downtime - Easier management, as AWS services are all managed by one simple control panel, as well as the ability to dynamically change server requirements. At the moment, we are looking to move VATPAC Core onto AWS services which will allow for a trial of AWS. This also removes some workload off the Vultr server, and may allow for a downgrade in Vultr to save costs. VATPAC Core v2 will also allow for better interactivity with the community and better extensibility for third parties and API access. Pilot Assist and vatSys We are currently developing the new Pilot Assist and ensuring Vatpac's IT infrastructure will support the new vatSys Client! The development of Pilot Assist is progressing well and nearing an alpha version, and we should expect a beta version by the end of Q3. Fingers crossed! We are also working with the members of the vatSys team to ensure it is fully supported by the IT Department and Operations Department for full release. If you didn’t know, vatSys is a new ATC client aimed at emulating Eurocat/TopSky, and with that, simulating Airservices TAAATS. Some of the features of vatSys are: - Eliminating the need for sector files (previously needed for VRC and Euroscope) - Allowing for controllers to coordinate via the Voice Switching Control System (VSCS) - Maps and windows; controllers are now able to provide top down services with ease using windows such as “Ground View” for specific aerodromes There are many more features included within vatSys and we are excited to release it once we’ve gone through thorough testing, making sure that it will be fully ready for VATSIM ATC! VATPAX VATPAX is under redevelopment! We are looking for more developers to dedicate time on this project. If you are interested please send an expression of interest email to Tom Grozev on [email protected]. - Theo Pham
  14. Operations - September The operations department has been full-speed over the last two months. The team have been working super hard to prepare the data files for use with the much anticipated VatSYS controller client, as well as releasing some other essential items. AIRAC 2010 has been published, which brings with it a large update to the Aussie database. As usual, many thanks to Peter Story and the rest of the AIS team for getting this one out with minimal delay. The ops team has also welcomed Clem Wu onto the team in the past few weeks. Clem has been busy getting stuck into helping with sector files and ground layouts for VatSYS, and now joins the team to assist with the update of the Brisbane local instructions. If you feel assisting with the updating of local instructions is something that you would be interested in, please feel free to email [email protected]; we would love to have you on board! 16. After several years, it is finally here! We are sure many of you have heard about the beta release of the new vatSys control client. It is my pleasure to announce that this client is almost upon us. On behalf of the developers, The Operations Team is excited to share three rapid fire features from the client that we believe will enhance your online experience. There are plenty more tutorials for you to discover on the vatSys website, you can more here. Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS) vatSYS will be the first ever client to integrate both the AFV codec, and integrated voice co-ordination. The Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS) is the module for controlling all Air-Ground and Ground-Ground communication. It features a series of easily selectable buttons to allow the selection of frequencies, intercom lines and general setup of audio devices. The design is such that the interface can be used via a touchscreen. Conflict Area Tool Conflict Area Tool determines the area that two flight plan routes are in lateral conflict. The drop down values are defined in the current profile and correspond to the required minimum lateral distance between the two routes. On successful calculation of a conflict area, the area with entry and exit times for both aircraft is displayed. Closest Approach Tool Likewise, the closest approach tool displays the point at which two flight plan trajectories are closest. This is an invaluable tool for enroute controllers using this to determine separation issues hundreds of miles before they even occur. Screenshots Here are a few more screenshots from the client to keep you all drooling over it until the next update. We don’t have a date just yet, but like most FS developers, we can tell you its coming soon... 17. On behalf of the Vatpac Board and the Vatpac Marketing Team, we are excited to announce that we are on the search for a new logo and logo designer as part of our re branding efforts. How the selection process will work: Unlike previous designs we are opening the design process up to members of the Vatpac community, if you have any experience with software like Adobe Illustrator we would love your help to design a new logo for Vatpac. Process of Application: Applications for your logo design will be due on the 10th of November at 23:59z via email to [email protected], if you require additional space please share a google drive or similar. It is strongly recommended to use Adobe Illustrator or any similar vector based design software however if you are unable to use such software we can work with you to refine and produce a logo. The Vatpac staff team will work with the designers to refine the logo's and ensure they fit Vatpac's design brief. Vatpac will then present the top logos as decided by the Vatpac staff team for public comment and selection, this feedback will assist Vatpac in selecting it's final logo by the end of 2020. The Design Requirements: To ensure that the new logo works within Vatpac as a whole we have some essential criteria, A full sized logo, like the current logo A small logo for profile pictures, like what can be found on discord If you feel that you have an idea of a logo, however, you are unable to produce it yourself a simple drawing can assist us in creating a logo off your design. We're back and proud to announce the next event for the Light Up series, Light up Tasmania! It is time to pull out those regional aircraft or commercial airliners and travel down to the apple isle of Australia as we attempt to provide the most realistic ATC services for you as you travel to stunning destinations that Tasmania has to offer. Travel between Hobart (and Cambridge), Launceston, Devonport, Strahan, St Helens, Flinders Island, Georgetown and Melbourne with the expectation of full ATC Services from 0400z - 0800z. What is Light Up Tasmania? This event revolves around one of our older events (Regionals and Twins) with the idea being to provide ATC services to more regional locations around the country. Lets be honest, our regional towns don’t get the love like the big cities do, so lets change that! Travel to those often forgotten destinations and provide controllers and pilots alike a different challenge. A challenge to fly into a unfamiliar location and try an approach other than the famous ILS approach. Because we know so many of you would love a longer flight we decided to include Melbourne in the event. We encourage you to use Hobart's second airport Cambridge YCBG for use on regional routes. Cambridge is the home of Airlines of Tasmania which fly many RPT VFR and IFR routes around Tasmania as well as doing charter tourism operations to places like Melaleuca in Tasmania's south with their fleet of Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander, C172, C206.
