  1. It's a culture issue in this division that isn't the fault of any staff members or controllers and sadly will only stop when the people involved stop... obvious point I know, but it's just the truth of it.

    I was considering flying MRM last night but decided not to because the frequency was likely to be infuriating to listen to, is this really what we want our events to be like? The people misbehaving need to grow up or move on.

    Sam do you know who produces/runs it and if it's possible to makes suggestions for additions to its database (such as smaller airports like Goolwa (YGWA), Nhill (YNHL) & Mangalore (YMNG) which aren't currently in its database?).

    Mentioned in the commnent you quoted ;)

    Unable to start a new topic in this forum ....

    "Daniel" on BN-TRT_CTR 28 Jun 'Spilled Milk Monday'....exceptional service at Broome.

    ACK the delay but saw what you had going on and did my best to (un)help you out on DEP.

    Thanks for the night, thanks for the ATC...very much appreciated.

  4. Even if you are running a weather engine, pressing the "B" key can sometimes be inaccurate if the QNH in your simulator's conditions doesn't match the QNH in the ATIS or whatever the controller gave you, which could result in the altitude in their scope not matching the altitude in your sim (ignoring radar update times lol). Just make sure the QNH from the B key isn't too far off from what the weather on VATSIM is too

  5. Yesterday's event was disappointing from my point of view, specifically because me and another controller had to fill in for two controllers who hadn't shown up for ML-SNO_CTR without any warning. From what I heard, this was the story for the last leg as well, and even before the Avalon leg. Pilot numbers were also down, but hey, what can you do?

    Is there any explanation for the lack of controllers or did just a large group of people just decide not to rock up?

    Careful taking photos in the area of the airport. Security are hot on those taking photos of airport infrastructure. You can expect to be approached and enquiries made unless you have arranged some form of prior notice advising them of your activities.

    Also, see if someone can obtain a picture of Bucky. This is a teddy bear that has been in place for ages as a runway ambassador. An absolute "must have" if an Adelaide Airport scenery is to appear authentic.

    How recently has this been happening? I've hadn't had an issue.

  7. The data server is controlled by VATSIM Tech and the Board of Governors. After the AFV release we've had some issues with the data server specifically the controller info, and it seems to be fixed last time I checked. If it doesn't work for you whenever an AIRAC cycle is released that that's entirely coincidental and nothing to do with it.

  8. Bill if you're still looking for info on legislation, then the Air Services Regulations 2019 might fit.

    Section 14 of the regulations state:

    (3)  The Aeronautical Information Publication must include aeronautical information required to be included by any of the following:

                         (a)  these Regulations;

                         (b)  the Civil Aviation Act 1988;

                         (c)  the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988;

                         (d)  the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998;

                         (e)  any other Commonwealth law;

                          (f)  the Chicago Convention.

    It's also stated that the AIP itself isn't a legislative instrument however obviously the above a

    cts are.

    they belong to whomever created them, and so do the tech problems.

    The issues with controller info not showing in the who's online programs is actually to do with issues currently with the VATSIM data server as the transition to AFV is underway. It's entirely on the server side, not the programs. We're looking at a fix but it won't be immediate.

    At the moment, I have started the training, working on my 20 hours observation before applying for assessment.  At this stage, there is no reference in the materials of any practice scenarios for the positions.  At the moment, feels like once I get my 20 hours, then have an assessment.  I can read the documents over all i want, but I am better at hands on learning :)

    Yeah, you'll get to the hands-on learning part with a mentor over a few sessions once you've done the observing hours and finished the theory exam. The observing and theory exam is required to make sure you understand the basic concepts of tower controlling so you can come into the mentoring sessions ready to get right into it.

    Tristan, not sure you've seen but, for some people life has changed whether it be school, work or lifestyle. Hence why there has been a decline in numbers. I.e. our favorite BOE777 has not been on this year due to study commitments for his HSC (I think it was) and me who has been busy with VCE subjects. Wait until the summer and we may see a spike up in numbers

    Couldn't agree more

    There is a major difference between doing Pilot rating training and ATC training here, in that during pilot training, there is the chance to practice what you learn. With ATC training it is more "Read, Observe, Test".  There is no chance to practice setting up an ATIS without testing it live, there is no way to run a simulation of Clearance, Ground, and Tower operations.  And as Clearance, Ground, and Tower ratings are part of the same course, you are technically qualified to run all three once course is completed.

    The ATC training process for tower students actually gives them plenty of experience in a controlled simulation environment practicing various aspects of clearance delivery, ground, and tower controlling. As a mentor I assisted my students pretty thoroughly with the process of setting up an ATIS on both VRC and ES, and we tested connecting it and listening to it through Sweatbox. A student won't be given their rating if they're not competent with all three aspects of the rating anyway. Once you start your ATC training (if you haven't already) then you'll see what I mean :)

    8 minutes ago, Bryan Bartlett said:

    The best chance to get experience on the sim is during events, but a newer ATC may not be willing to jump immediately on tower, and may prefer to practice clearance or ground operations.  At the moment, it seems they are then really expected to wait in the hopes that someone takes over tower so they can jump on ground, or else take over tower, and if another ATC sees them on tower, they wont know that person would gladly hand it over to drop down a level.

    It makes being a new ATC during events feel overwhelming. I am not even there yet and I already get nervous thinking about it.

    Of course! Everyone feels nervous, I definitely did. We generally encourage students to build up some hours before jumping straight into MRM, but someone can learn a lot from just giving it a go. VATSIM is a learning environment and gaining experience on events is part of that.

    2 minutes ago, Bryan Bartlett said:

    if it does, it should be something that can be used for a person to practice with outside of testing -.-

    If someone wants to practice then they should send an email to the ATC training department requesting a helper session, which could be done if the mentors aren't too busy with students. If that can't happen, then generally building up some hours on a slower airport could definitely help. Even controlling Melbourne or Sydney during quieter times could help. You don't have to control MRM all the time, all experience helps.
